Interior of an old home Aura or something else

We are looking at buying a shingle home from 1899. I want to get the entire interior painted the Duron Antique White. Now I know duron is crap. What I want to avoid is the nuts expense of the Aura. Any ideas on a great washable flat that performs like an Aura but just a wee bit less expensive? We are literally going to paint the entire house the same color with gloss white trim/doors.

PPG's Manor Hall Timeless. Just mentioned on another thread that local independent paint stores are a treasure trove of options if you know what you're looking for.

Have to be careful in an independent tho because they often have to move inventory. So, the "best" paint you can buy or the "best" paint for your project can be a sliding scale based on what they need to move out the door that month, etc.

Independents are great and not all of them are so opportunistic, but ya still have to do your homework and there are incredible values to be had -- again, provided you do your homework.

There's also ACE Sensations - look into that one too.

We're putting a new second floor on our old home, and are using 4-panel doors in a 2 -over-2 arrangement, with square sticking. They look simple & relatively timeless to me. One place we are saving money is the hardware. I love Emtek knobs but can't justify the price (door knobs are something I can change easily down the road, not so much for plumbing fixtures, the doors themselves, and flooring). So we're going with Kwikset in matte black - they feel better than Schlage (less jiggly) and are pretty inexpensive. My logic is to splurge on items I can't easily replace & for items I can swap out later (in a couple years) I'm choosing things I like so I can afford to LOVE the other things.

I suspect it is because summer has arrived. Hot exterior walls leads to hotter interior walls and sometimes this creates the paint to start to smell again. I have a room in my house that I never heat or run the AC into and now when I walk in there it smells like it has been freshly painted. I would still email Valspar though and explain what it is happening to see if they have any insight.

I painted my bathroom and bedroom in the Aura paint. It covered nicely and didn't drip or splatter. Where I had problems was with how quickly it dries. In the bathroom with the relatively small room and 9 overhead cans, the paint pan would dry up and every now and then a piece of dried paint would come up from paint pan liner onto my roller. It was a double whammy because if I kept too much paint in the pan, it got gummy and if I kept just a little bit, it dried up and I got the paint pieces on the roller. But on a regular 8 foot high wall, it was very easy to touch up afterwards - but again you can only roll over the same area no more than twice or you risk picking up some already set paint. In the bedroom, I had some major problems with roller marks. The walls were 13 feet high at the center going down to 8 foot. I had a terrible time painting such a large area with out making roller marks. In some spots I just gave up after 2-3 attempts at fixing them. The matte paint isn't matte, it's more like eggshell so while it's nice and smooth it shows roller marks on a high wall when direct sunlight shines on it. Fortunately, once the blinds and drapes were installed, I couldn't see the marks as much! I prefer a basic flat matte paint that doesn't show roller marks and touch ups or drywall imperfections. I'd say this paint is not for an amateur who paints relatively slowly or who has really high walls. I have done alot of painting over the years, and have had these issues when painting any eggshell type paint, but wasn't planing on having these issues when I chose a matte finish.

LVP or something else in my million dollar home?

I don't like the idea of LVP because of the environmental impact. I have been hoping that with technology there might be a super water resistant coating for hardwood floors. I have looked at Vermont Natural Coatings Super Whey 3500 which is used in commercial buildings, hotels, & restaurants. Vermont Natural Coating Whey water-based poly coating has been used on many sports/ basketball floors which do get lots of wear but not much water/ liquid spills that sit for at least 8 hours. I would never put wood in a bathroom. I have a semi-open concept home. The kitchen is open to the family/ great room so matching flooring makes the room look bigger and more elegant. The entryway flows into the back great room area so I prefer the main floor being the same flooring. I have seen how the water-based poly coatings on solid hardwood wears quite terribly over the years especially in front of the sinks, stoves, and refrigerators. Every design show makes the main floor all wood now unless it's in Florida where they use tile or LVP. The exception is the mudroom/ primary entrance from the garage being tile IF the main floor is hardwood/ engineered wood flooring. What issues do you typically run into with plaster painting?

Functionally, as long as you prep properly there shouldn't be any issue. Some older houses have layers of paint that are thicker than the actual plaster. (that's probably an exaggeration but ya know what I mean)

If there's actually integrity issues with the plaster, you should post those details - maybe on another thread - to get feedback on what "proper prep" in that instance means.

Aesthetically - and this is a personal note - modern paint formulas + old plaster walls aren't ideal partners. The final finish from a few Farrow & Ball products is a better fit for plaster. Paint is a film and the newer formulations look more "filmy" or "coating-like" than older formulas. The F&B example is pertinent because their final finishes don't have the same edge of "film" or "coating". Hope that makes sense.

Just something to keep in mind when you're shopping for, selecting the aesthetic of the final finish you want to end up on the plaster walls.

funcolors and paintguy both have more experience with a variety of brands than I do, but from personal experience I really like the Ace Sensations aka Ace Royal Finest. I've only used Eggshell & Satin, but the Matte is supposed to be really scrubbable and stain resistant, too (and in the interest of full disclosure: I work at an Ace).
