It depends where they are. Sometimes a card and letter, a phone call or bake them something. Even an email.

I like to surprise people with random acts of niceness. Whatever I do for them depends on their personality and whatever opportunity I have. It can involve taking someone to lunch, or picking up something from Tim Horton's for them. For some people, just calling to give them a chance to talk helps them when they are down. One girl at work LOVES to have a Tim Horton's coffee, and I keep winning free ones so I give them all to her. Also in the work place, I volunteer to take some people's work from them so they don't feel so overwhelmed.

Hope no one minds if I give part two of my prior post from May 16. The one where I bought Optimara Modesty. Remember she was one of 3 violets in the Lowe's that day. Well I went back to Lowe's today and those same two violets were still there. Last time I saw them was on May 16 when I bought Modesty. Oh you should have seen them. I think they may be circleing the drain. There leaves are so limp they just hang over the pot. I felt so bad for them I took them over to a decorative fountain and let the water run over the soil on both of them. At least that would help until I was done with grocery shopping. Yes,,,,,,I asked the lady to reduce them and bought them both. Poor things. But guess what I noticed when I got to the car? The white one was tagged Ontario! Could it be Optimara Ontario???? Becha it is! The other one had deep purple blooms with little white flecks on it. They are both in the intensive care unit right now. Well if they don't make it I will take them back for a refund. Thank goodness Lowe's does that. I know it was stupid and they may die anyway but,,,,well, I guess I have no more to say about it. Rosie

During the growing season: Intermittent mist, 7 to 10 seconds on, 10 to 15 minutes off, depending on conditions. Composted pine bark fines, with or without some peat and perlite mixed in (landscaping mix or soil conditioner). The 3.5" pots the nurseries around here use for their annuals. Hormodin #3 rooting hormone. Dormant cuttings, including cuttings salvaged from the spring pruning discard pile: The same rooting medium. Two cuttings per pot in quart sized perennial pots. I apply rooting hormone, stick the cuttings to about two thirds of their length, then place the uncovered pots in a wind protected area where they'll get morning sun only. In my climate there's no need ever to root rose cuttings indoors, and no need to cover leafless cuttings in cool weather. We get plenty of rain in the winter and early spring. I root dormant cuttings in pots rather than in the ground so they can be safely potted up to gallons and moved to the pot ghetto for the summer. It can be difficult to pot up a young rooted cutting growing in the ground without killing it. Pine bark fines are a dirt cheap and readily available commodity in my area, thanks to the regional tree farming industry. Coir works just as well, but not any better, and it's a LOT more expensive. I have to either drive to a larger city 35 miles away to get it or buy it online and pay shipping charges. Those of you who don't live in pine country and are having a difficult time finding a convenient source of coir might want to check out whatever is commonly sold as soil conditioner in your region. In his defense, he has very bad digestion--ulcerative colitis, so I think he is always worried he is going to aggravate it/have a flare up. But then he limits himself so much food-wise that then he binges on something. Like when he was bragging that he didn't salt his food or like salty foods, I pointed out that the crackers, breads, boxed meals, ham and salami and canned soups he eats are more loaded with salt than any amount you would get from a casual sprinkling from the salt shaker. He just got mad at me and said, "I don't want to argue about it, I'm just saying I don't eat salt." I've tried for DECADES to get him to create some healthy eating habits for himself. It will never work, better and smarter people than me have tried too. But cooking for him is sure a roller coaster ride. Some of his lady friends and neighbors tried cooking for him right after mom died, but they soon gave up! I just do what I can, try to detach, as long as he's not wasting away not eating, there's not much I can do about the quality of what he eats. The more I push for something healthy the more he pushes back, that is just his nature.

Robin, I've gotten a number of roses from dear Claire, above, and the Cascadia group. Claire loves old roses and the group has some very nice people. That's one good way to accumulate roses, join one of the local groups and buy from their low cost sales or get cuttings and propagate. Another really helpful group is the one that meets in Tacoma; really lovely people there and a good source of information. They maintain the very large rose garden at the Point Defiance which has an abundance of both modern and a nice old garden rose section. There is a mix of people there and they do a nice ARS rose show if you like that kind of thing and an auction of roses in late fall. I think it helps to know what kind of roses you want to grow. Once blooming old garden roses like the albas and the gallicas? Repeat blooming old roses like the portlands or hybrid perpetuals? Spinossisimas have a charm of their own that's like nothing else. Love fragrance? Any particular color? There are some really beautiful more modern roses - I love the ease and charm of some of the recent Kordes releases. Most of the roses people here love are not going to be found at a local box store, you have to look for them. The search and the learning rival the sheer fun of growing them and dealing with all the problems that attend any kind of dedicated gardening. It helps to look at rose books also and learn the different classes of roses ... or ask here and people will share their knowledge. Rosarian-types love to share what they learned from a book! Over the years I've spent hundreds of dollars and along the way learned how to propagate and accumulated a lot of books. Roses are a hobby like tatting or crewel work or collecting porcelain. Favorite vendors of mine for on line sales are Burlington roses in California and Chamblee roses in east Texas for modern Kordes and some Austins. I've also ordered from Heirloom and Rogue Valley and am very satisfied. High Country is great! Rogue Valley also gives away mystery roses and other roses with a certain order amount. Gean

I'm with socks here.

I can usually find something in our conversation to make them laugh.

Many times I'm told that talking to me always makes them feel better, or that they needed a laugh.

I do have a humorous mindset, and it just comes naturally to make someone laugh, or at the least, smile.

That works in real life; not necessarily on the web.

Laughter is the best medicine.

Sometimes people just want you to be on their side. So, just agreeing with them and seeing it their way without giving the opposing view.

I like to talk to folks ... and several have said, over the years, that I'm easy to talk to.

I can often find something in the conversation to bring some humour into the situation.

Some have said that their day seems brighter after they've talked to me.

I've said, hundreds of times, over the years, to myriad people ...

... that one of the best stress-relievers around is a bit of humour from time to time (as long as it's not aimed at rooting someone in the ribs).

But - they can't bottle it ... and sell it ... so there doesn't seem to be a great deal of interest in it.

It really depends on the circumstances. Some people just need a word that you are there for them, others will stay in a funk no matter what you do.

Laughter is the best medicine and lots of times just being there. That's sure a biggie, your concern for someone.
