Family night

We've recently initiated family night at our house. My wife and I and our three daughters (7.5,5 & 8 mths) either rent a movie or play board games, puzzles or cards. I'm looking for suggestions on movies or games that can be played by both the 7.5 and 5 year old (and parents). For the games we quite often play in teams with an adult on each team. To date we've played junior scrabble, junior monopoly and battleship. We've seen all the standard animated fair and have recently rented; the love bug, home alone and the sound of music.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

p.s. it's great having a dedicated night for just our family with none of the neighbour's kids over (we seem to attract them at our house.)

Card games are always good, matching, old maid ect. You could do some crafty things too. I found a really good web site that can give you lots of ideas that both girls would enjoy and it is geared to the diff. ages.

I think it's good that you do this with them. I don't think enough parents spend good quality time with the children without the t.v. always going in the background and having outside distractions. You will be making memories for them too that they will carry on to their families one day.

We have a fun game called "Kids on Stage". It's a charades board game for kids. It's great for beginning readers. My kids also like Uno and Rummikub. It took my 5 year old a few tries to get the idea of "runs" and "sets" of numbers, but now he loves it.

Thanks again to Ais and to Quirk for the info - I so look forward to next summer w/my new Moonflowers ! - and for the warm welcome. I'll try to not be too much trouble here "wince> :o) Quirk, I'm also from south of Boston, so we have a few notes to compare and Ais, you're right here in Raleigh (me too) so we can at least comiserate over the over-building, over-development (and planticide) our area is seeing these days. I'll try to back up and add to my member page later tonight - may need to do a refresher on the 'practice board' as I'm pretty computer stupid. I have been reading here for a couple of years, but was unsuccessful in joining in until recently - bad skills and balky ISP. Now y'all might be hard pressed to shut me up ! Luvs, I had so much fun planning this table. I think I had more fun writing Alexander and Charlotte's story though. LOL! After finishing, I thought of so many more things I wish I had written...isn't that usually how it goes though?? Jeannespines, I feel blessed to have a such wonderful family that tolerates my little obsessions. They just laugh and say "Mom's playing with the dishes again". Punk, not tired of doing the tables...just tired of having to put up stuff when I take it off the table. LOL! Seriously, this many tables hasn't, up until now, been normal for me simply because I didn't have the time and energy. However I am now officially one of the many unemployed people in this country, not by choice though, so I have time to play around with table settings. Although if I want to keep feeding my little dish habit, I'm going to soon need to find a job. Jane, sometimes I wish we could go back to more glamorous days when ladies wore gloves and hats and sparkling jewelry. When I see old photos of ladies dressed like this, they always look so elegant to me. Well, maybe I wouldn't want to do it every day, but once in a while would be fun! Judith, I do adore black and silver together and my daughters had a ball with this one! They helped me pick out the jewelry to use. Although my middle daughter did ask me if I had lost my marbles making up a story to go along with the table. LOL! Mary Ruth, thank you so much! I think we all need a little fantasy now and then. It helps to balance out everything else. Writersblock, thank you for the kind words! I really enjoyed this setting and hated to take it down. Kathleen, I've had problems posting too! Hope this is soon fixed. As for the tiara, it's been with me a long time and is really looking a little sad now. When I was a little girl, I loved the movie Cinderella with Lesley Ann Warren. I just knew one day I was going to be a princess like she was. Yeah, right...LOL! Occasionally my mother would go to the jewelry store and they had the most beautiful tiaras in there. I wanted one so bad and then one day my mother surprised me with this one! It's been alot of years since then and I was really young, but I can still remember how I felt when she put it on me. For that moment in time, I truly was a princess.

How about a small banquette seating arrangement in the corner under the windows with a round table and a couple of parsons chairs for the game area? You could then use a loveseat in place of the sofa and an opposing pair of chairs (it would be nice if you could float these into the room so the traffic pattern doesn't cut right through the seating but I don't think you have enough depth). Or you could have the loveseat face the 8 1/2' wall, again floating it into the room, with the back facing the dining room (put a narrow sofa table behind it). Otherwise I would agree with Teacats that a sectional in the corner would be another option.

Okay, this might not work at all, but thinking outside of the box... what if you put the game table and chairs right smack in the middle of the room in front of the fireplace? Then moved the sofa to the corner where the low bookshelf is now and angled it so it is facing towards the middle of the room (with the window next to the fireplace behind it). Move the bookshelf under the kitchen pass-through and either flank it with large plants or eventually find a longer bookshelf to take up more of the space. This way, you break up the two adjoining rooms' sitting areas with the table, and allow more direct conversation between the kitchen and the goings-on in the living room...

For movies, check old Disney flicks like Blackbeard's Ghost, Absent Minded Professor (the original), etc. Or old Jerry Lewis films: The Nutty Professor, Cinderfella. Old Don Knotts movies: The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, The Reluctant Astronaut. Marx Brothers movies are also good for kids and adults.

When my kids were younger we used to watch all these old movies -- they were the movies I saw on TV back in the 60s and 70s and I loved watching them again as an adult, and since my kids were young enough when I started them out on these, they weren't jaded by all the newer blockbuster high-tech special effects movies of today.

As my kids got older, we began watching musicals, The King and I, Unsinkable Molly Brown, Fiddler on the Roof, etc. They love those!

And we started to watch movies from the 40s and 50s. My kids balked at black & white movies at first, but after a while, they began to realize that some of those black and white movies were so much better than what is offered today. After a while, when we were deciding what movie to rent, my kids started saying, let's get a black & white movie!

Check your local library for old movies, by the way. Here in Houston, you can get on line and select any movie in the library system and have it shipped to your local branch. They then notify you by email when your movie is ready to be picked up. And you keep it for two weeks. And it's free!

Good for you for doing the family night with the kids. Keep it up -- your kids will appreciate the time you spend with them!

get Pictionary, they have a kids version. It will be a blast for everyone in the whole fam (maybe not the 8 month old) :)
