Apricot cobbler turned crumble

A co-worker gave me a recipe many years ago, for an apricot cobbler using yellow cake mix. I have made this only a handful of times over the years, then the other day I decided to make it again for dessert, only to realize that when I was assembling all of my ingredients, that I was going to be very short on the stick of butter the recipe called for (keeping in mind that a cobbler topping is a wet batter and a crumble is a dry crumbly topping). It called for a full stick of butter and I only had about 1/3 left . It was too late not to continue since the wet fruit was already in the pan, so I added the butter to the cake mix and it turned out rather crumbly before it baked, as well as after it baked and I enjoyed it very much. I would like to know what other ingredients could be added to the crumble mixture? I have heard of oats?
