Backsplash??? Pressed tin? Laminate?

We are considering doing pressed tin for the backsplash in our new kitchen. Has anyone done this and had it long enough to share how hard it is to keep clean/looking nice? I know you can have it plain or different finishes and I imagine that would make a difference.

We need something that won't take forever and a lot of frustration to install and will be easy to keep looking nice.

We may also use the same laminate as the countertops. Has anyone done that? What do you think of it?

Hi Jennifer,
I JUST finished my kitchen and have pressed tin as a backsplash. We did it in stainless steel as it is the most durable. Look at my pictures in the post "French Country Kitchen". I think it's still on page 1. You can see some pics in the post, others (closeups of the backsplash) on my photobucket site that is linked.

Although it's still new (2 months old maybe), we are finding it really easy to keep clean. Mostly, we just wipe it with a sponge. Hit it with some SS spray once a week or so. I am a frequent and messy cook, so it's getting dirty.

Install was not so easy. My GC had never worked with it and neither had any of his guys. The cabinet installer (a real artist) did it and learned as he went - and cut his fingers a lot as it's really sharp. He bought some special blade which helped. Did an excellent job.

There are some companies that make a pressed tin "look", without it being cumbersome to work with. I think those are all meant to be painted though.

The look is gorgeous and unique - go for it.

Thank you melinrk! Your kitchen is absolutely gorgeous! We just have inside walls framed and are doing the work ourselves with some help from friends so I know I have a while to think about it. I just love the way "pressed tin" looks and the fact that there aren't grout lines to deal with! -Jennifer

Chloe, could you share with me why the caution with laminate behind the stove? I am planning my changes now, and was also going to consider the laminate copper look. Right now it's coved laminate and I've had absolutely no problems. Of course, with my style of cooking, it's very rare for me to have all 4 burners going at once.

You have a laminate BS that goes up the wall like tiled BS does? I've never seen that! Even if you tile w/inexpensive tiles, you'll need to repair the wall behind it so you may not be saving yourself anything. Maybe Bill_Vincent will chime in! I agree w/Live_Wire_Oak...don't waste your time & $$ (even if it's not that much) on anything more than paint. We actually have a painted BS as (1) we're saving up for it (along w/retirement & college!) and (2) I don't know what I want to do yet!

The tinning scrubs off real fast, then it rusts. It's OK in an area where you don't need to scrub. Keep looking.

I think it would look great. I think you should be careful to choose a pattern with low relief for relatively easy cleaning. They sell cheapo faux pressed tin panels (made of plastic) at Home Depot. You could put them up and see how you like them...

I had a kitchen with the laminate on the backsplash. It's a great material for a backsplash, but you'd of course want to be sure it's not too close to cooking surfaces. Mine was old enough to have metal strips where the laminate met the backsplash. Great look until you have to clean it.

Anyway if you don't need the visual punch of a fancy 'splash, laminate is great.

I also like the pressed tin though...you COULD do both, with perhaps the tin in more decorative spots like behind the range...

Thanks fori. I like the idea of mixing the two. Stainless would obviously be great behind the cooktop and the laminate could go well in other places. I am wondering then if we could just caulk between the counter and backsplash so it would be easy to keep clean. I am pretty sure we will go with Wilsonart Bella Capri- I think it is attractive and would look fine for the backsplash too.
