Best Interior Paint

Hi: I am getting ready to repaint all the walls in my new (to me) home. The walls are all currently painted in an off-white flat.

Looking to add maybe pastel colors, but I am most concerned what is the best satin or semigloss paint to use.

I have not painted in years. Any suggestions about what paint brand to use would be so appreciated. I definitely need a paint with low fumes and one that is truly scrubbable

I would wait and if you need a second gallon, plan to run out to get it when the time comes. I'm very good at ordering the right amount of paint. End up with enough to put in a canning jar for touch ups and that's it. I've over-estimated with Aura a couple times - it just *goes* farther. I've never, ever seen Aura finish in one coat, I've never, ever seen a person who was such a good painter that they could paint with any paint and end up with a proper, full finish coat. One coat coverage is just that - coverage. Coverage is not a proper, final, finish. Aura looks good after one coat, but it won't look like a $60 can of paint after one coat -- you need TWO. Two coats of Aura will give you the coverage and the durability, wearability and all the aesthetic quality you could wish for. Don't just do one coat - I think I made that clear?! lol! :D With that said, you can absolutly go back over Aura for missed spots - it just has to be reasonably to completely dry. Especially if it's Aura matte. Practice with Aura first. Do not go directly to the wall with it. You need to play with it a bit to get the feel of it because it is different. Do all your cut ins first and by the time you finish cutting in, you can start to roll on the wall you started with cut in. Keep a shallow pan and refill often because Aura will set up in the pan and get gunky. If you walk away, cover the brush, roller, pan. Can't leave it exposed to air. Go slow and do not over work. Put it on the wall and move on being careful to get the right amount on the wall - don't want too little, don't want too much because it will sag and drip and going back to correct sags and drips is not easy. It's best to take your time and make sure they don't happen to begin with. Touch ups are a breeze. Try not to miss spots, but if you do know that you can go back and hit them later.

There is no 'best' paint. From my recent experience with Valspar (which I used for many years) I found the paint had changed greatly, from what it was 4 years ago. I figure the EPA keeps raising the bar.

That makes no sense. I can recommend BM Aura Matte as a fabulous paint with 1 hour re-coat time so it makes for quick painting. I edge, roll, edge, roll and can do 2 coats in less than 4 hours (the prep takes longer than the painting with Aura). It is expensive but great paint for many reasons: quick re-coat time as mentioned, self-priming, scrubbable, touch-up able, low VOC. I can touch up a spot on a wall 2 years later and it still matches. It is quite amazing. And I am always cleaning the walls with a large dog and kids and they really are scrubbable without any shiny spots. Your painter probably likes to use what he is used to so you may be better off finding the paint line you want and then asking at the store for recommendations for a painter who is already familiar with the line. editing to add that I am not a pro, just a person who likes to paint the house walls every 1-3 years.

Beverly, wow thank you for those beautiful renderings. So helpful and definitely food for thought! :) I have decided I will probably be refinishing the floors in a few years to a mid tone (less orangey) brown, because that is what I'm bumping on. The texture in the ceiling is from the weight of these massive beams in the attic. The window is probably a newer addition as the home has changed a few hands since it was built in 1921. I actually don't mind the stone on the fireplace. Maybe I'm crazy but I like it! Thank you again for all your thoughts! Holly, our furniture all rather neutral (think medium to dark woods, mid tone grays). Most added colors or accents are in the blue and gold and silver families). I will have oil rubbed bronze leaning towards black knobs and pulls throughout the house. Liz, I will definitely get a sample of soft focus. I also love your trim/woodwork...bit of sugar is so pretty. Thank you!

If you go to the store and get the new Consumer Reports 'KITCHEN' magazine (look for white letters(Kitchen) on blue header) ... they are rating all Interior Paint in there, on pages 70 and 71.
According to Consumer Reports the best paint in Satin & Eggshell are:
1. Clark+Kensington
2. Benjamin Moore Aura Satin
3. Kilz Casual Colors Satin
4. Glidden Premium Satin
5. Behr Premium Plus Ultra Satin Enamel
6. Olympic One Satin Enamel
7. Glidden Duo Eggshell
8. Valspar Signature Satin
9. Benjamin Moore Regal Select Eggshell
1. Royal Interiors by ACE Satin
  ....etc.
  the worst paint - according to Consumer Report is:
2. Sherwin Williams Duration Home Satin
  They tested Hiding, Staining, Gloss Change, Scrubbing, Smoothness and more.

Just used Clark & Kensington last week. Dark olive, satin. Loved it. The satin isn't too shiny, loved the viscosity, not smelly.

The C+K is getting more popular here too!

I don't care as much for deep colors (Neutral tint-base) that have older Deeptone base formulas re-formula'd into the Neutral.
(Looooonnnggg story there...)

It'll be changed supposedly this Fall, when ACE's whole new Palette arrives. Also new will be waterborne colorants. This will require new tinters!!!

The two Ben Moore stores closest to me always try to talk customers out of buying Aura and to push them toward Regal Select. I'm with you on CR--often what they say their criteria for testing are aren't my criteria for using a product.

Yea over the years, I have never really agreed with any of the Consumer Reports paint rankings and I'm not so sure any painter has. Behr has been #1 too many times. I think some stores may push people towards Regal Select instead of Aura because some have complained that Aura is difficult to work with because of the fast drying times, but to me...they all dry fast and I don't notice a difference between the 2.

I'm a fan of CR overall....BUT....

NOT in regards to "Coatings-testing" of ANY kind!!!!

MY REASONS:
* Coatings depend on, to a large degree, the skill-set AND tools of the HUMAN putting them on.
* If you let 10 random people loose in the same house, with the SAME paint, BUT let them choose their OWN tools, and assign them to each paint 1 like-size wall in a different room....
* You'll discover TEN different thicknesses of paint, with different final appearances too.
* In addition, each one of those walls could very well have a different substrate-issue.
* Believe-it-or-no....the COLOR can have some effect on surface-performance as well.

>>> I realize CR uses draw-down slides to control WET/applied thickness, but different paints will dry-down to varying DRIED mil-depths. This can lead to HUGE variances in final coat performance.

Good Housekeeping did a complete analyze. Said Sherwin Williams SuperPaint rated A+ plus 2 other paints both by Ben Moore. Berh Ultra rated A-.
Some Sherwin William paints are top rated; some are not. But that applies to a lot of companies.
I am going with SuperPaint for two reasons: 1. My local store is giving me the 40% off sale price until the completion of my project, 2. Superpaint is very highly rated by the professionals.
