Faux finish a painting?

Hello! I have an inexpensive painting that I would like to "antique" with a faux finish. I have in mind the kind of finish that really old oil paintings get, where the finish is slightly crackled, and tiny bits of dirt and dust have settled in the cracks.

I've read through the bazillion web sites explaining how to crackle finish, but since I want the whole painting underneath to show through, that's not really helpful, since my top coat won't be a solid color.

The painting was done with craft-quality acrylic paints. Any suggestions on how to do this? Would it be possible to try a crackle finish with Elmer's glue, and use a top coat of a very pale water-based stain? Has anyone done anything like this?
