Conversion varnish and catalyzed lacquer cabinet finishes
Comments (4)Similar, but not the "same". Conversion varnish= large manufacturing facility that can deal with all of the environmental regs needed to be able to use the tougher wearing stuff. Can be water based or oil based. The toughest hardest wearing finish available. Catalyzed lacquer=shop built, but with decent technology enough to be able to spray a decent, but not the best, finish. Can chip easier if you have rollerskating kids or drop a soup can on it. Stands up to everyday wear OK if the maker has purchased one of the better quality systems. There are all manner of quality coating available though, and some makers cheap out badly here just to have the "name". Any of these is better than site sprayed or brushed. That's the low end bugs and dirt in your finish that fails before the year's out but only came with a "tail light warranty"....See Morecatalytic conversion varnish
Comments (16)Hi cuisinita, The sample door is from a company named Rambo out of Oklahoma. The KD I worked with carried these cabinets. Unfortunately, the KD wanted $27K for those cabinets and I've decided that's way too much. I am in the process of pricing out Cabico and Wellborn. I am trying to keep the cabinet budget to 15K, which I think is generous for such a small kitchen. I am spending quite a bit on the appliances, particularly the La Cornue Fe range and Liebherr refrigerator, and of course, the granite counter top. I want plywood boxes, full-extension glides, blum soft close on the drawers and cabinets and wood doors. I want to use the latest technology as I plan to live in this house for a long time. As for the distressed look, I go back and forth on it. I may just give it up to save some more money. I totally agree with you about the gouges :-). You have a very good eye ;-)....See MorePre-catalytic vs post-catalytic conversion varnish kitchen cabinets
Comments (0)I am interested in American, factory-made kitchen cabinets. I've read some conflicting info about pre-catalytic and post-catalytic conversion varnish being better than the other. I understand that with pre- it's mixed into the paint (for painted cabinets). Is post-catalytic conversion varnish really the better varnish, more durable against water, paint protection? And what difference in appearance is there for painted cabinets? I like a more matte satiny look to the finish rather than too shiny. And does anyone know if Omega Dynasty and Omega Pinnacle uses pre or post CV? What is anyone's experience with their white cabinets and how well they hold up against water, stains? I want to be sure that I choose the most durable cabinets if I'm going with painted white cabinets!...See MoreWould you use conversion varnish on custom cabinets?
Comments (6)I'm not sure, Nancy, as our cabinets are custom and went through conversion varnish process. Or well, some complicated process. Special booth etc. What I did find out though now when researching, that there are different varnishes, and not all of them are available in CA,due to very stringent CA rules: "A low formaldehyde version of conversion varnish is not available for sale in California because it does not meet the state’s volatile organic compound (VOC) standards. Keep in mind that formaldehyde is a VOC and once the finish of regular Conversion Varnish is fully cured before home delivery, there will be no VOC or formaldehyde breathable by the homeowner." found on the website of a CA-based designer-builder-there is a chapter on cabinets there that goes into expanations and details on different finishes, so it's an informative and interesting read. He does prefer conversion varnish to all the other paint finishes, (as also our cabinetmaker did) but is an opionated guy in how he writes ..)) Here: http://www.dndb.info/cabinets/ Would be great if pros in the field chimed in. I do suspect though that paints etc here lack certain ingredients..they remind me of my gluten-free food, like something is missing:) I wonder whether it's just my feeling. But then we don't know where the OP lives, so might not be relevant. There are several threads on Houzz as well that discuss subject, as far as I understood-I saw them when started googling-but I didn't get to reading them yet....See MoreChristopher Nelson Wallcovering and Painting
