Scherrs vs Ikea vs Kraftmaid or other
Comments (33)Ikea uses metal boxes. My guess is that it is the lower grade of Tandembox from Blum since Ikea uses Blumotion for drawer runners. Tandemboxes come in lacqured metal or stainless steel. Tandemboxes can be used with their Orgaline of drawer inserts that look very much like Ikea drawer inserts. I am not sure if Blum makes the ones that Ikea uses or not. But... If you wanted to change the standard dovetail hardwood drawers with Tandembox from Blum, a typical custom cabinet maker considers that an upgrade and charges quite a bit for the Tandemboxes. So what you are getting with the Ikea is an upgrade from the standard drawers. HOWEVER, you do get the MDF boxes which is considered "less" durable than plywood. (I am just quoting the industry saying.) So Ikea boxes/drawers are a mixed bag in terms of "perceived" quality... Having said that, I really like the Tandembox drawers and I only looked at custom cabinet makers that offered that option. I think it is a HUGE functional improvement from the standard dovetail boxes because the accessories are so well designed and easy to use. I would say to go for it with the Ikea boxes with custom fronts. Let us know how it turns out. (I considered that option seriously for us. I actually picked the custom route for myself.) http://www.blum.com/pdf/BUS/3063_tbx_fb/3063_tbx_fb.pdf...See MoreKitchen Designer vs. Cabinet Salesperson
Comments (9)Laurie, I think a lot of it depends on the sales person or the designer you are working. He/she has to have your vision. We met with an architect first. The charge was around $500, but worth every penny. We were moving walls and adding windows. She drew my ideas and added some of hers, so I could see how my kitchen lay out worked with the rest of the house. Our new floor plan is very open. Our styles matched and it helped me move forward. Next was a structural engineer, to be sure it is all possible. He added a few new ideas... showing how the skylights could be incorporated. Then I met with a kitchen designer who sells Holiday Kitchens. I probably would have used her and her cabs, but she moved out of the area in the middle of the porcess ( and my bad, I had already paid her for her drawings- that is a long story) But she gave me some good layout ideas. I went to several local shops and just looked around, talked to different designers. Which led me to a KD who sold Kraftmaid, I liked her- she just seemed to know what I wanted. In meantime I had also gone to home depot, but was afraid the designer there was not as creative. It was quite a process for me! However, in the end, I feel I was loaded with information and knew what I wanted. I'm sure I paid more for the cabs from the Kraftmaid dealer, but she added lots of custom touches and when there were problems with install (wrong door sent, or figuring out how the crown molding and book shelf go together, she was invaluable. I realize you may not have the resources in your area to this, but hope this helps you (or someone else) in some way...I was on this forum constantly for advise and ideas....See Moreplain & fancy versus crown point vs knight kitchens
Comments (1)I have P&F painted, inset. Now 11 y.o and holding up very well. Very happy with them. They are considered semi-custom but did custom pieces for me including a plate rack and some shelves. I also sent them a handle for my dishwasher that they spray painted to match the cabinets. Crown Point also do a beautiful job. I've seen their work at home shows. Cannot say one could go wrong with either of those. Though one poster a while back didn't like PF at all. However, kompy thinks highly of them. She may weigh in. Comments (69)This is a great thread and I've read it with lots of interest. I'm not as interested in IKEA vs. the rest as I am in frameless vs. framed. I grew up in Europe with frameless cabinets and have now lived in the US for nearly 30 years with various framed cabinets. I still like frameless better from what appears to me be a usability factor, but maybe that is all in my head, but the things that I'd like more information on is to figure out if this is just in my head. What is the inside dimension of a drawer for a say a 30" cabinet for the different brands, or use the 36" or an 18" as an example. The same goes for how much space is wasted in say in the 171" direction and the 143" direction due to the framed parts? It might not be much, but having gone from a large kitchen where I had plenty of storage and the frame was smaller to a smaller kitchen with framed cabinets that has more frame (I assume to save money on the doors) this is something that is really pushing me towards frameless feeling like it has less wasted space and be more comparable across lines of frameless cabinets vs. framed ones where that seems to vary by the manufacturer. One thing that to this day annoys me with the framed cabinets is the lip on the bottom shelf. I love it when I visit my mom and friends in Europe how easy it is to slide out a stack of plates from the bottom shelf and not have to go through the lift motion first....See MoreRenovate911
