Apron sink set back into counter?Pics anyone?

My first post! I am considering setting my apron sink back into the counter 2" from the face of the cabinets to the sides of sink. All the pictures of sinks I've seen have the front of the apron extending beyond the cabinet, and some have the whole sink base extended out too. My problem is that the sink I'm in love with (Whitehaus Quatro Alcove with a drainboard on the side) is only 20" deep.Its 36" wide. If I set it flush with the cabinets, that will mean a six inch area at the back of the sink- taking into account the countertop. I want a wall mount faucet. I would have to get a faucet with a huge long spout to make it to the center of the sink. I'm not wild about the idea to add a bumped out ledge at the back of the sink to mount the faucet on.The faucet I've found goes 12" from wall to water discharge. So... Has anyone seen or have an apron sink recessed into the counter area rather than bumped out? Can you see any problems with this? If you have one like this, does it function O.K.? Do you have any pictures of what it looks like? Thanks for your input. Love this site.

Dottiet,

This is not what you asked to see, but it may help answer your question about the wall faucet. The front of my apron sink is flush with the front edge of the drawers. This Chicago faucet reaches the sink without any trouble.

The sink cabinet is recessed rather than flush with the adjacent cabinets.

Great. Your sink base is recessed just like I envisioned mine to be. I just plan on having the front of the sink flush with the sink base front with a lip at the bottom for drips and no cabinet doors on the sink base since I have to leave it open for the cast iron radiator that will be under it. BTW, love your drawer pulls. Where do they come from? Thanks

A good friend of ours has done many concrete countertops and they look amazing. We seriously considered it for our remodel. The staining/etching is what turned us off. To be perfectly frank I'm a slob in the kitchen. A countertop that would be damaged by red wine or lemon left on it overnight is just not feasible. Instead we went with soapstone. If it can hold up to legions of teenage chemistry students I feel it can hold up to me. :D If you do decide to go with concrete have you seen the books by Fu-Tung Cheng? They're excellent. Soapstone can be a lot more affordable as a DIY project. The quarry we bought from has DIY kits for about $25/sq ft or you could make it even cheaper by using tiles. Soapstone seams incredibly well.

Claybabe, You are a goddess! Forgive the delay in response, I just caught up with mail and had missed this post on the forum. YES, those are exactly perfect and VERY VERY helpful! I can't thank you enough! These, along with the thread in the metalworking forum, should give us ample inspiration to go on. Was there a reason you decided to notch out the counter where it hit the sink, rather than leave it full thickness? Aesthetics or other? It looks fantastic, I must say. Do you know what substrate was used? We templated our mdf/plywood substrate this week, copper sheet purchase is next week. Starting to get excited! just wanted to commiserate with you on the plumbing problems. We have an old house were the plumbing was added later. They dug under one end of the house about 10x10 with an exterior entrance, and all the plumbing was put on that corner. We wanted to put in a bathroom closer to the bedrooms and move the kitchen, so we had to run the pipes under what would be the new bathroom floor. Kitchen sink had to be installed on the same wall as the bathroom sink, with the pipes and drain/venting going through the wall into the bathroom cabinet, then down into the floor. As it was, the distance was almost too long for the drop and to still be able to hook up to the outgoing line. That would have required a lift pump in the cellar, not something we wanted to consider. This is the bathroom side of the wall. If we ever have problems, our cheapest solution will be to hand dig a trench under the bathroom to access the pipes. Hope that never happens. I don't think we would have room for a garbage disposal either, as the drain goes into the wall and then down. Since we have a septic system, doing without a disposal was not a hard choice.

have finished the 4th remodel (wow 2 yrs since earlier post on this thread!). Used all white (no patterns speckles or veining) in MasterBath, Butlers Pantry Wet Bar, and as BACKSPLASH in Kitchen whose counters are Stainless Steel. (the rest of kitchen is all white cabinetry with brushed metal pulls). No qu that the white is stunning, crisp, pleasant. MasterBath is fine. Butlers Pantry: the white counter is unforgiving and shows everything. So on a second bathroom we chose white with a little gray veining and that has been excellent / easier. Kitchen all white backsplash with white cabs above below has been great and VERY easy clean (we cook a lot and use spices that stain too). But the all white in kitchen would have been intolerable as a counter for us. Stainless steel is not for everyone but 3 kitchen renos later, (2 remain actively in use) we love its cleanliness and the patina and very, very low maintenance. It looks surprisingly good with Cesarstone / Quartzite type stone products

The drawer pulls are from Horton Brass. Cheri127 kindly shared her source with me. I ended up using the same hardware in a different finish for the bakery cabinets. It is sturdy and less expensive than many other choices out there. And, I LIKE IT! :)

Thank you cotehele for the brass pulls info. If you don't mind, I'm stealing your idea. A question for you (& anyone else) I notice you don't have indented toe kicks. Do you notice any difference and does your full to the floor trim cause any foot interference? It looks like you would be constantly hitting your toes on the trim. Any problems with it?
