Jean, I purchased a Canon EOS 60D just before I went on vacation in mid-Feb. Wish I had had time to take courses before I left but didn't. I pretty much learned it on the fly while traveling.

Now that I'm home and have some free time, I've been watching a lot of Canon specific videos on YouTube. Canon even has their own YouTube channel. I also do a search on YouTube for the specific thing I would like to learn like Bokeh or blurred background techniques, using filters, shooting in low light levels, etc.

Below are some sites I've booked marked.

I bought a T2i a few years ago at a camera shop . They offered classes if people bought their cameras.
Don't know if you have that option but I learned quite a bit. Still wish I knew more about the settings and how to adjust them quickly.
here is a school you might like.

Hoboken I love the bathroom. It's going to be very close to the look I'm after in my bath, though I went even deeper in the browns for my shower with this tile: I'm going to use it on the shower wall, as well as the soaking tub deck and backsplash. We'll have brown vanities and the antique lighting is also in brown and golds. I used a lovely creme marble for the countertops and the floors (as well as the shower floor and ceiling) will be travertine (a soft tan called Roman). The walls will be Marmorino plaster in the soft tan of the travertine. I have this all in my mind, but seeing your bathroom briings it to life, even if my textures area bit different :) Thanks for reassuring me that we'll have a classy space (hopefully every bit as lovely as yours!)

How do you print sharp pictures?

I have iPhoto. From what I have found (and been able to understand on the internet), computer screens only have 72 dpi and so that is what Mac sends photos in. If this is the case, how do professional photographers send photos over the internet? And that to get a good quality print, you need to print at 300 to 600 dpi. But my printing program does not ask for dpi. It only asks for size of print and even then won't print that size. For instance, when I put in that I want a 5 x 7 print, it will print 4 x 7 and cut off a head in the picture as well! I have the Canon MX870 series printer. And the manual is talking about PNG files, and I don't know what that is. I thought my camera only worked with jpeg or RAW files. I have learned that working in RAW files won't degrade the image on storing it like jpeg files do, but I would need to get new software. And this book I have says the jpeg files should be good enough for ordinary pics. And the manual is also talking about the camera needing to be a Pictbridge compatible device and I have no idea if the Canon 480 D is. This is getting way too complicated for me. I wish I had brought my little Pentax with regular film on vacation with me. People on another forum are advising me to upload pics to a Walgreen site and have them print them. But if the Mac only sends pics at 72 dpi, what good does that do?

Mid-range DSLR Recommendations?

We are a Canon family, our first Canon ( a Canon AE-1) was purchased 35 years ago. Since then each one of us including extended family has one or more Canon cameras, range from Canon Power Shot to EOS 5 D Mark III. Canon EOS Rebel line is a competent, wonderful, mid range priced DSLR. I purchased a T2i several years ago, it came with 2 kit lenses, 18-55 mm, 70-300 mm, later I added a L series 100 mm macro lens. I love my camera and lenses (with image stabilization). With a tripod, I could take any photo I intend to take. Since T5i is new, I believe it has better features than T2i. Now is a good time to shop for camera. Don't forget to check out Costco and B&H. Usually Costco has best price but with less choices. B&H has terrific selection and reasonable price, the advice/supports its customer service provided is 2nd to none.

OK, I'll try an explain my thinking... 1.look at your environment and decide what you want to shoot. Since it just finished raining thought take some macro of water on various plants, used the ef-s 60 due to it lightweight for hand held close-ups. Next I look at lighting, low clouds but not too dark so I didn't need to use a flash, I can use settings to manipulate lighting. 2.Determine camera settings to archive the look you want. Take a few test shots at various white balance, shutter speeds, aperture, iso settings to get an idea how the end result will be. Used manual so I could adjust as light situations changed. Also change focus points depending on composition. 3.Take some photos Lighting is everything, watch how the shadows effect the look your after. Direction of light source, your position and so on. Doing this type of photography your able to take multiple shots at various angles to get the looks your after. The thing that I watch the most after camera settings is background objects and color. Find the subject, figure out your aperture/shutter speed, compose your shot, select focus point, check background. I don't want something behind the subject to draw your eye away from the focal point, aperture comes into play here. The bigger the f stop (smaller number) the more the bokeh( background out of focus) you achieve. I took 100 photos to get the 9 that were most appealing, out of those there are 4 that are my faves. f5.6, 1/50s, 800iso f5.6, 1/50s, 800iso Used ef 17-40 f4, settings f8, 1/100s, 800iso

That's a neat camera simulator, Jodi. I'm curious about the lighting adjustment at top left. Is that the equivalent of setting the white balance? Back when I got my first camera (at age 10), my dad taught me about shutter speed and aperture, and I had to learn to estimate settings because I didn't carry a light meter. Focus, speed, and aperture were the only controls. But I got good results most of the time.

Oh, and film ASA varied, of course. These days it's called ISO.

Jean, I don't know anything about classes, but Jodi's links are probably excellent. If you want something to do between lessons, I recommend hanging out at the DPReview forum that covers your camera:

I think this is the one. If not, go up to Forums at the top and look for a better one.

I continue to learn a lot on these forums--about lenses, printing, software, and technical stuff--plus there are many inspiring images to view.

Alisande, I think the lighting is actually the exposure setting of "EV". If you set the simulator to Manual, you'll see the EV right under the photo change as you set the lighting.

Jean, I subscribe to the DPS that Toni suggested. I get weekly tips sent to my email address. I've also submitted photos for the weekly assignments.

omg...you all are AWESOME! TY! We took the cameras out today and played with them...I got a couple of "decent" shots if I do say so myself. There are many buskers, and I was impressed that this young man was out even tho he had to use a string as a guitar strap. LoL I've never taken any photography classes, it's all been by the seat of my pants, and this is the first DSLR I've ever had. I'm eager to learn what I can, and you have just turned me on to some great sites. I can't thank you enough!
