Have never seen this site~love the black cabs/stainless kitchen!

There are a few members from the Home Decorating Forum who have their kitchens on the Rate My Space site. ;o)

I'd reassure you regarding your choices. I have been so totally happy with my MA experience and I'd hope you have the same. Several comments: Yes, MA just resells blowers. I chose a Fantech inline blower over the Hy Ex which was their initial recommendation, mainly because my contractor and HVAC guy were not enthused about going out on our steep roof for the install. I suggested an Fantech instead and they were completely happy with that decision. When I made the decision, Jeff Herman, my MA contact, said that they could sell it to me, but likely I could save a few hundred $$ on price and shipping by finding the blower online. After looking around I was getting totally stressed out by having to figure out if the websites were legit, if I was ordering the right backflow damper, duct adapter, rheostat etc etc. I finally contacted Jeff and said hey, I know it will cost more, but can you just send me whatever it is that I need and just take this off my list of worries. The small markup was totally worth it for the peace of mind of knowing that someone who knew what they were doing was doing to make the order. Jeff was totally willing for me to buy it on my own, so adding to their profit was clearly not the motivation. Regarding the decision of internal vs external blower: I think the logic is somewhat different given your short duct run. Normally I'm a huge fan of remote blowers. However, a big reason that this has worked so well for me was the ability to use the Fantech LD10 silencer along with our FKD 10XL blower. The silencer does a great job of eliminating any motor noise tracking down the ductwork. Without it, I suspect a significant part of the advantage of a remote blower might be lost, expecially if the blower was only 9 feet from the hood. Absent the silencer, the advantage of the external blower without a silencer may not justify the cost. I totally found that MA was focused on the best product for me, not squeezing a few hundred dollars more out of me. I'd tend to trust their advice, although if it were me, I'd ask for Jeff Herman's opinion, who I think is the gospel when it comes to ventilation. If Jeff says go wtih the internal blower, I'd do it. But, no matter what, I think you'll love the MA hood. It's neck and neck with the Lacanche range as the favorite part of my new kitchen. I cannot imagine a better ventilation choice based on my experience.

erikanh: that's the first picture of your hood/range I have seen, and it rocks! Totally different look than our kitchen but I love it. The way you've assembled the critical elements of cooking into a compact, incredibly efficient layout is fabulous. It makes me want to drop everything and start cooking right now. And, of course, the hood is gorgeous. Great job. rgjem: you are asking the right questions. Clearly if you are ducting straight out the wall, with only a very short run of duct, there is little advantage of an external blower, as the distance is too short to give you the noise reduction you'd want from an external blower. The alternative is to run duct all the way up to the attic and roof. That's what we did. That allowed us to use a Fantech inline blower and silencer, and the result is an unbelievably quiet hood. I am totally ecstatic with it, but others might not find it quite as ideal. The duct installation was a nightmare, involving many hours of HVAC consultation. The performance of the blower is reduced by the long duct run, though the layout of our range (which is in an entirely enclosed alcove, which greatly enhances hood performance) compensates totally: I can sear at max temp and have not a wisp of smoke escape. For me it was a no brainer but many others, who would prioritize cost, and maximum cfm performance, would choose otherwise. I am going to take the liberty of quoting a recent email from Jeff Herman at Modern Aire which I think is the clearest explanation of the pros and cons of internal vs external vs inline blowers (Jeff was aware I might do this). It was directed at another potential customer who had corresponded with me, thus the reference to my (Mark's) hood: Our hoods are supplied for use with our internal motors 600 Â 2400cfm, Abakka exterior blowers 1000 and 1400cfm, and Fan-Tech inline blowers so switching for the fan is not a problem. If you are planning on using the Fan-Tech inline I highly recommend using the silencer. It makes a very dramatic difference in regards to air and motor noise at higher speeds. The Abakka exterior blower is the quietest option we have going right now, but the performance is not as good as the inline IMO. If pure performance is the most important then our internal blowers are the best way to go, they are louder in comparison to MarkÂs set up, but are moving more air then the inline or exterior blowers at 1200CFM. Our internal blowers compensate for higher static pressure loads and do not slow down when connected to ducting making them a great choice for super long duct runs or duct runs with many turns or transitions" HTH

Hi Lynn - We really do like the Turbochef. The "regular" oven is quite good, and I use that frequently. My favourite things to make in the speed oven are roast chicken (delicious and juicy in 25 minutes) and things like roasted veggies or fish. I can get home from work and have dinner on the table in 45 minutes, including all the prep. A couple of niggles. Because the temp settings on the oven are on a dial, to go with the retro design, you can't calibrate temperatures. For instance, if a recipe calls for 225F, I can only choose 200 or 250. The increments are more like an old-fashioned oven. So, for instance I don't have 225F, 275F or 475F. Now, I've never had a digital temp dial but I am assuming that I would have more room for calibration. The other thing is the cleaning. Even though it has a self clean feature I have been advised (by the folks at TC) not to use it. The ceramic plate gets quite dirty. One trick I learned about from this forum is to put 1/2 c of ammonia in a glass bowl and leave it in the oven overnight. The fumes break down the accumulated build up. Re: induction. I learned about induction through the appliance forum and while intrigued, I didn't want to fully commit, esp. as I had always envisioned a gas range. Plus DH really wanted gas (what is it with men and fire?) I love having both. The induction gives me a bare whisper of heat for super slow or low simmering, which I can't get with gas, and we have recently sarted using our gas grill more frequently with great results. Your kitchen is what I had in my eye's mind! We have an 1800's Victorian house and have started to think about renovating the kitchen. I can't go forward until I have the palette in place. After visit the granite and marble yards....I find I'm not crazy about granite. We did decide on soapstone and off white cabinets. It is so great to see your beautiful soapstone/cabinet combo. The floors are wonderful too. We have 40 year old linoleum. All I can Hope is that it turns out as beautiful as yours.

I got so excited at Picture #1 to see a familiar kitchen that I didn't flip through the whole gallery... I'm off to do that now. I'm supposed to be researching range hoods but not making much progress!

I can barely call it research if the price tag on these is what I gather, but I could call it "elimination of possibilities".

Just found an earlier thread that revealed this a month ago. So I am behind. Still, a fun find!

Mine is in there as well (Red PS26 hood with red Aga range). I'm sure there are other GW members who have been included in there beyond those already mentioned. There are quite a few of us who are happy Modernaire customers!

I flipped through some of them - thought I recognized yours, Marthavilla! The multi-color kitchen (from GW member) is in there too. Don't recall her name.

marthavila, I was so struck by that one when I saw it -- stunning! I keep meaning to look up your kitchen but am so scattered with all my decisions that I keep forgetting. I'm going to look it up right now... I LOVE your MA!

The multi-colored kitchen is Redrange's, Allison! (Redrange was the prime inspiration for me to go red as well!) Don't bother trying to find photos of my kitchen anywhere other in assorted GW threads or on Atticmag.com, Jsweenc. (Atticmag is Allison0704's and Rococogurl's baby -- a electronic home design and decor mag -- where you can find both of their spectacular kitchens featured, and probably even that of some more GW members). That's 'cause I'm one of those TKOs whose remodel is technically "finished" but who refuses to acknowledge that fact and keeps finding problems, need for new details, etc. and ,thus, keeps also finding reasons to put off posting the final results. LOL!

Marthavila, that's not fair! I know your kitchen must be gorgeous, so that's an awful tease! Don't you have any previous posts of progress or "almost finished"? I even looked in Atticmag (cool blog, BTW ... I've been there before, but don't have time to read luxuriously right now) but didn't know exactly what to look for. Don't put it off much longer, MV, or we might have to come visit to get a look at it!

See what I miss when I'm busy cooking?? :-) It was fun - and surprising!! - to see our kitchen on the MA site a while ago (in the post that you referenced, jsweenc).

MV - you are so BUSTED, girlfriend - no more excuses - we are all dying to see every last detail of that gorgeous kitchen of yours, even without the finishing touches. Haven't been to AtticMag yet - maybe that will satisfy me for the time being :-)

Wish that MA would out a link back to GW, so that folks can discover this wonderful forum for ideas.

Yeah, Liz, I guess so! I was just hoping this thread would disappear so I wouldn't have to be asked to pony up again! LOL! Honestly, I suppose another confession is that I've waited so long to post my photos that now I'll never be able to meet the expectations that have been created by showing just a portion of the kitchen "hiding" the rest of it like this! (You won't see anything of my kitchen on Atticmag,btw, that you haven't already seen here.):-)

In the meantime, I must tell you that I never tire of looking at your kitchen!!! It truly is such a classic beauty. No wonder MA has featured it as the page one kitchen on its website. Talk about gorgeous! I promise you that one day I'm coming up to your neck of the woods just to drink it all in in person!
