I thinks it's "Innermost" I think a few posters have used them-they are one of the pricier offerings at Home Depot. I believe I saw the display last fall-a number of doorstyles that looked nice but I didn't think the carcass looked any better than Ikea. If I were you I would compare what you can do with Ikea and interchange the door choices with Scherrs. Secondly, I would seriously get a whole kitchen quote from Woodharbour's frameless[previously Rockglen], if you want the whole kitchen in frameless and are going to lay down some serious money. Woodharbour has the capability to do something custom if needed, and the rest "stock" would go with it,keeping costs manageable.They have vast options.

We have InnerMost from HD. The quality is excellent and we're very pleased. I know some piece of their literature (scare 'tho it is!!) said to put them together first and then lift the whole run, but after much searching, that's not what we did. We put them up one at a time, leveled in all directions, fastened pairs with connecting bolts and screwed the newest one to the wall. And, yes, we did DIY.

One of the things I really love about our frameless cabinets is that they allow us to use every possible inch of our small space.

The mdf (AKA "furniture board") vs. plywood is an old argument around here. You can search it on this site and get a million or so hits, but how about an easy summary?

First, definitions:
Plywood - made from thin sheets of wood veneer layered so that the grain of each sheet is 90 degrees to the ones on either side. There are 8 recognized grades from sorta glued together with all sorts of defects (fine for some purposes) to really nice. Cabinets would use the top 2 grades. Generally an "upgrade," although many dispute that the upgrade involves any perceptible quality vs. an upgrade in cash outlay.

mdf - made from wood fibers combined with wax and resin and formed under high heat and pressure. Doesn't have knot holes and other imperfections of plywood. Doesn't hold wood screws as well as wood, so other fasteners may be used. Often used for painted cabs since it doesn't have a wood grain showing and paints up well.

"furniture board" - highest quality mdf, although not all manufacturers use the term. Any decent cabinets made of mdf will use this quality no matter what they call it.

particle board - is like mdf except that instead of starting with wood fibers, it starts with wood chips and chunks that are waxed and resined together. Not suitable for cabinets. If any cabinets are actually made with this, you'd probably purchase them in a back alley for a "really good deal." I'd have said it's not used at all for cabs, except that I suspect the cabs in the kitchen of my nephew's newly flipped/newly purchased house. Some building people use the term loosely when they really mean mdf.

Thanks so much for clarifying that furniture board is a subtype of MDF. You say, too, that cabinet makers will use the 2 highest grades of plywood. I take it that's something that's somehow regulated? Good to know.

So is MDF graded and regulated in a similar fashion? How can one satisfy herself that she is getting "really good" MDF?

Frameless cabinets are installed differently than framed ones. You put the whole row of them together, and then attach to the wall as a unit.

Actually, that is what every source of installation information I could find said to do with framed or frameless.

It is also much easier to level everything on the floor. Then mount a 2x4 on the wall and prop the entire row of cabinets on that 2x4. I have done this installation by myself, easy.

Not exactly. Some furniture board is actually "partical board". MDF is made up of a very fine "fiber" almost like wood flour. Particleboard/ furniture board (which is more of a marketing term than a product name) is made up of larger particles kinda like grits or cornmeal. The particle size can have a very broad range depending on the maker and the specification. The quality can range from practically junk to a fairly dense and totally waterproof sheet.

It ALL depends on the specification, and it's hard for the consumer to tell or compare without getting specification sheets on each product.

Yes, there are great products in both products as well as crappy ones. comparing a low quality of one with a high quality one of the other just isn't fair.

This is also not the case. Boxes can be put on the wall the same way regardless of their type. I've seen plenty of "framed" cabinets ganged together on the floor and then hoisted up onto the wall by a truckload of men or a lift like suzanne's first pic shows. Some frameless cabs have a very clever rail system in which a metal rail is attached on the wall and each cabinet is hung independently onto it. There are adjustment cams that raise and lower the box as well as adjust for plumb. You rarely see this on a framed cabinet , but it is entirely possible to use. which brings me to the takeaway:

It all depends on who or how the cabinet is designed, and the "frame" is only part of the equation.

Sort of. It's not because of the install , but rather the design. The frame on a framed cabinet is what gives it strength. So typically, but not always, the sides are thinner to save money. On a frameless, the whole box works as a system to give it strength.

MDF=Medium density fiber board. That is similar to particle board like wall paint is to driveway coating.

The pillar of the industry [Wood-Mode] makes their DG 84 cabinets from particle board, and it is NOT the particle board you see under a laminate counter top. look for the "pound" rating. They also don't sell them at Home Depot, what does that tell you?
