Covering painters tape "bleed" on ceiling
Comments (2)Applying a gold pinstriping might take longer than just repainting the whole ceiling. People tend to avoid painting their ceilings, and often a fresh coat of paint up there makes a visible difference. If your ceiling is white, most likely it was painted with a color called "ceiling white" that the painter bought at the closest paint store to the house....See MoreSome first-time painter questions
Comments (13)The problem with the edger tool is that it doesn't get tight to what you are cutting in (the wheels keep it away). That looks ok, but not perfect IMO. Also, newbie painters end up getting paint on the wheels pretty quick and then it's just a mess. You can use a brush, but this takes practice of course....you aren't going to be able to make straight lines with it on your first try. Taping isn't as easy as it sounds either. You need to press down the edge of the tape where it meets the wall or you will get paint bleeding under the tape, and this takes practice as well to get the technique down. Rolling also takes practice. You need to use even pressure when you roll or you will get drips and lines coming off the edge of the roller. These drips and lines will be on your walls forever. If the walls are currently flat (which new construction usually is) then you will need two coats primarily because flat paint is very porous and will drink paint like a sponge. The second coat will be a lot easier than the first because now you will be painting over a sealed surface. The second coat is also required for sheen uniformity. When you are looking down a wall with the natural light coming in, it will be very obvious that only one coat was applied, regardless of color coverage. Heck, even when some people apply two coats, it still looks like hell because they don't know how to roll....See MorePainting over old lacquer...HELP please from painters?
Comments (6)You should have your friend test the finish. There's a fair chance it's been refinished one or more times over the past 80 years. There's also good odds the origional finish was shellac, which would be a good thing. Matter of fact shellac might be a good choice as undercoat after stripping and before applying new paint. You can expect some people incouraging you to preserve the origional look. I'm looking foward to easy fix ideas because peeling is one of my least favorite situations to run into....See MorePainting entire interior and painter bought low end paint. What to do?
Comments (18)I see no need for a "big argument." Being reasonable and rational will get you much more goodwill. Simply explain what you've said here....that you thought the quote included a better quality paint and that you'd prefer he use XYZ paint instead. See what he says. Obviously you both failed to clarify what specific paint would be used so pointing fingers would be useless. Find out what it would take to switch at this point and be prepared to compensate him for the paint already purchased. Could the paint be used somewhere in the home less perceivable such as closets, maybe? Better yet, put it on Craigslist or a Facebook Buy Sell Trade page and see if you can sell it to recoup costs. There are lots of ways to try to fix your "problem" without a big argument. And FWIW, our painting contractors used this "cheap builder grade junk" in our home and it looked great and held up great with four kids. We used eggshell in the Property Solutions....See MoreFaron79
