Have any of you (or anyone you know) ever had trouble conceiving. Besides fertility meds and things of that sort, did anything else help the couple to successfully conceive a child? My friend has been trying for a year to get pregnant. Her and her dh have a child already (that was not planned at the time) so they are going crazy about not being able to have another. They have been told the "it will happen when your not trying" thing and I was wondering if any of you had any other advice. They have tried ovulation kits, no smoking, no caffeine, and only having sex every other day. No success. Any ideas??

I would suggest they refrain from having sex for a week or two before ovulation. Then about 2-3 days BEFORE they think she will ovulate (which they should by now have a good guess at), have sex. I have found many people get pregnant earlier in the cycle than they think they will. I'm not sure about the refraining from sex thing, but if they're consistantly having sex ever other day and his count is low to being with, they may want to at least try abstaining to build up the boys. Then again, I really don't know what I talking about but they may want to give it a try.

I didn't have fertility problems so take these for what they are worth.

Dear Abby had an article several years ago suggesting that men wear boxers instead of briefs. Several people wrote in to say it worked.

I had a former coworker that had a hard time trying to get pregnant with her second child. She said someone told her to take Geritol instead of other vitamins. It helped her to get pregnant.

Anyone agree or disagree with this?? I am trying to grow organically as far as my soil goes. My beginning plan concerns soil amendments and fertilizers. There are many choices that could be made in that there are probably about 10 different commonly used amendments and over 40 different organic fertilizers available, I want to come up with a plan that will assure that my plants are sitting in porous well aerated properly watered soil with all the NPK, micronutrients and minerals they need and in the right amounts. I need help with this. I had begun by amending my soil with compost, pine bark fines and some perlite. I have completed this step for this year. Now I turn to organic fertilizers. For phosphorus I plan on adding bonemeal 3# per 100 square feet, for potassium 4# per 100 square feet of greensand, and for calcium 3# per 100 square feet of gypsum. These will all be mixed into the top 4 to 6 inches of my garden this fall. I will also add kelp meal 2# per square foot for micronutrients. I am more uncertain about what to do for nitrogen. I was going to put in feather meal 2#per 100 square foot for slower release of nitrogen in the fall and then composted chicken manure 2# per 100 square feet in the spring along with maybe some alfalfa meal 3# per 100 square feet and maybe fishmeal 2#per 100 square feet. My soil pH is 6.6 and so I felt no limestone was needed and used the gypsum instead for calcium. My garden is inside a high tunnel, a small one, and it will be covered with either straw or alfalfa hay. To you more experienced organic growers is all of this appropriate or am I way off? Yep. 1,300 pounds of organics per thousand square feet in a single season. On a soil that already had a solid base of organics and a prepped set of bacteria, fungi, and healthy set of worms and insects that hadn't been destroyed by insecticides and so on. I moved more than seven tons of material into ten thousand square feet over seven months. I did, I think, overdose myself slightly on Ibuprofin, and I certainly did wrench my knee. But the lawn kind of glowed green. I think it squeaked a bit as it grew. Grand total organic nitrogen: 37 pounds per thousand square feet. Normal target nitrogen: 5-6 pounds. Organic nitrogen does pass through the salt forms, but most usually spends its time bound within a bacteria's structure. When that dies, it gets released (and transformed to the salt form), and the plant gets a chance at it. Or, it can be traded to a plant's roots in exchange for a sugar molecule. Or a fungus may throw a nitrogen molecule away that it doesn't need as it decays a dead bacterial mat. And so on. The system is complicated. Really, in a well-balanced system, your synthetic nitrogen will get sucked up by bacteria as well--that's why synthetic nitrogen gets processed as fast as it does. There's urease in the soil. But that's another story entirely, and why my lawn can handle, easily, the occasional blast of synthetics without even blinking. The bacterial mass is strong enough and healthy enough to simply suck up the nitrogen I add. Or the dogs add. There's simply no burned spots--ever.

Have you ever had a water analysis or does your city send one? I'm fortunate to have the third-softest water in the nation naturally (the first is Portland, Maine). There are about twenty ties for third, we get ours from natural and artificial lakes in the Poconos. Fortunately, most hard water is hard due to calcium. It causes a lot of buildup, and soap scum (the sodium in soap get substituted on the fly with the calcium from the water as your water spontaneously gets softened a little), but the plants don't care much. Sometimes it's magnesium, which is much more of a problem. And sometimes it's other elements (trivalent or divalent metals, usually), and that can be major issues for plants (you don't notice it in many cases, or it'll be removed at the water treatment plants as some of those are toxic). Excess iron in water leaves tons of stains and just tastes awful...but it's far more common in older pipes and metal fixtures. Washing soda (sodium carbonate) is more effective in the washer and for cleaning than baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), but if you use it for cleaning, wear gloves. It has a much higher pH when concentrated. I'd recommend just using baking soda. I make my own laundry soap (and all soaps, actually) and use an admix of washing soda in the formula to increase cleansing. Even in very soft water, it does help remove dirt. Fun fact: To easily remove soap scum, pre-soak with hot water and baking soda, let sit for 5 minutes. Cover with a towel, then soak the towel with vinegar. You'll need to do a bit of scrubbing, but the scum will be much easier to remove after that. Sorry, don't get me started on water, soap, ions, soils...it's all related... :-)

Tomato fertilization questions

I have never understood the research and permutations gardeners go through to determine how and when to fertilize things like tomatoes. Or roses. Gardeners have been growing them successfully for decades before all that technical nonsense was available online. There is no need to reinvent the wheel :-)) If growing in containers in a soil-less mix, use a waters soluble fert with all necessary macro and micro nutrients like Dyna Gro's Foliage Pro or GROW. You have the option of fertilizing with every watering or weekly and the dosage is clearly spelled out. For plants growing in the ground, a dedicated tomato fertilizer, like Espoma's Tomato Tone or Dr. Earth's Tomato and Vegetable fertilizer, applied according to label directions, will supply all the necessary nutrients for healthy and productive growth.

I am going through the same thing right now. I would suggest she go and see a specialist. She'll take an HSG test and do some blood work. He will need to go and make a "donation" as well. Then the doctor will evaluate. There is a chance she could not be ovulating. The first thing we've done is take Clomid to help me ovulate. It's a pill you take on day 5 through 9 of your cycle. On day 23 I take blood work to see if I have ovulated. We're on our third dose right now.

Again, I would definitely recommend to go and see a specialist. I wish I hadn't listened to all of those people (including my gyno's) who said "it will happen when you're not trying." I would have gone a year earlier to the specialist. Good luck to them :) Christy

I haven't been there, either. But a friend of mine tried for almost a year to conceive with no results. She went to a specialist a few months ago. They did blood work. Found out she has a blood disorder causing her blood to clott more than it should. Good discovery, as it needs to be treated in itself. And, they determined that is what was causing her infertility. She had also mentioned to dr that her periods were "different." Regular, but shorter. With all these facts, they believe she has always been ovulating, and that the egg was being fertilized almost every month. But the blood clotting disorder was causing a foul up with implanting on the uterine wall. She would miscarry within days of conception, before she even knew she had conceived.

They got that straightened out easily. I don't remember what was prescribed to her, but it includes baby asprin for to reduce the clotting and even more folic acid that is normally recommended for pregnancy. Next cycle everything worked like it's supposed to, she is about 10 weeks prego now (now morning sickness is driving her nuts).

I know it's not always so simple. So really my point is the problem could be so many things, and no reason to assume the worst. And the best thing is go see a specialist and it could be resolved with less stress.

Another thing she could do is to start taking cinnamon capsules. I've recently been given that advice, and was forwarded the article. Here it is below, it is the 4th article down. Christy :)

I have one more suggestion :) I've heard that accupuncture is very effective. I haven't tried it yet, but I am open to it, and have started looking around. Christy :)

Personally, while I understand the desire to have a child, I think that too many people these days are trying to do it too quickly.

When we were trying to get pregnant (30 years ago), it wasn't happening. We were young, establishing our careers, had a house that was stretching us a little financially. We were S-T-R-E-S-S-E-D in other words. We tried to get pregnant for 6 years--with no specialists, but no success, either.

Then, one day, I got laid off from my job. Seemed like the end of the world on top of everything else. Was the best thing that could have happened to me. We realized that we were okay living on DH's salary. I couldn't get another job in my field that year, but was called back to work at my old place for about 4 months, because 2 other employees were pregnant. That year, being one of big changes, I went on a self-improvement program that included some serious working out. And guess what happened? By the time I was done my pregnancy fill-ins, I was pregnant, myself.

The best thing, IMO, assuming there isn't a serious medical situation--is for the couple to remove the stress from their lives, and stop obsessing about getting pregnant. It was when we did that, that it happened within months. That may sound a little contradictory to what I just posted, but it was one of those--when the worst happens, you realize things aren't nearly as bad as they seemed in your mind kind of things.
