Making scones and 'scoring' the dough

Okay so I want to try a recipe for Scottish Oat scones. Never made scones before. I'm reading the instructions with my husband and they say to: Place on the prepared baking sheet. Score 8 wedges into each circle of dough and then bake.

I understand that means to basically just make a line. To mark where you will be cutting the scones when they're done. But why? Does this affect the finished product somehow?

Thank you.

Kate
