Do you hate going to the doctor & dentist?

No - enjoy them, usually.

Seldom see the doc - usually just for (more or less) annual check-up ... but have been seeing him lately for some swelling on the lower legs.

Had a bunch of work done at Univ. Dental School about three years ago, including many extractions (one requiring some grinding of the jawbone to get it out) and dentures ... was it poor memory? I don't think so.

I had a female student with Indian background ... and when I told a supervisor that she had gentle hands, the super agreed, enthusiastically.

It seems to me that I take many things in stride. Son was with me during an auto accident, a couple of years ago ... and after a few minutes said that he was surprised at how low a level of upset I was experiencing. I said that no one had been hurt, that there hadn't been huge damage, and that what was done was done ... that fussing about it wasn't going to change a thing.

Sometimes I wonder whether the chewing of the fingernails in anticipation of the event is much worse than the actuality, for quite a number of patients.

I don't like going as it gets in the way of things I want to do, but no, they don't really bother me.

I remember when the afro was popular and I asked my Mom if I could have one and she said no. I was in the 7th grade and thought how mean. Well when I was a freshman(14) in high school, I asked again and she told me that I could do it IF I was responsible about it and kept it neat and always looked presentable. I remember it as one of my first big decisions and I was so proud of the fact that she had enough faith in me that I would do the right thing and I did. Fast forward a gazillion years later and my D son asked if he could grow his hair out so that he could wear it braided. At the time he was 14 and I remembered the encounters with my Mom and I said the same thing to him. My hubby immediately said no and we had a family meeting and we made it clear that if he didn't take care of his hair AND save up the money to pay for getting it braided himself, then it would be cut off. Well my son is now almost 22 with hair below his shoulders and he is very responsible about taking care of his hair. Actually he is almost obsessed about it :-) That was one of the first real mature decisions for him, just like it was for me. I think depending on the maturity level of the kid, 14 is not too young to start experimenting with hair. As long as it is made clear to the kid what the potential ramifications are, then I think it is fine. I think we as adults have to remember what it is like to be that age and struggle with individuality vs what's popular and how hard it can be for teenagers. It is just hair and it will grow back. I have had every imaginable hairstyle under the sun,afro, long, short, asymmetrical, mullet and braids. Each style represented me during a particular period and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to do different things. We have to support, be honest but let them discover who they are. Oh yeah one other thing, as soon as my son started growing facial hair, he loved it and I hated it. He would let it grow long and I would beg for him to please shave and my hubby gently reminded ME about letting him express his individuality :-) To me he looked like Grizzly Adams but to my son it made him look older. Ughh.... So the running joke between us was that I would call him Grizzly but if he wanted to look like a mountaim man, that was his choice. Again fast forward a few years and he has a very nice goatee that is now well manicured and he looks great. I remembered my own experience and let him be and he eventually grew out of the Grizzly Adams look. Thank goodness!

I hear you loud and clear. My life has been devoted to art and I paint, sculpt, do pottery, carve etc and have done nothing for a whole year and now I've become complacent. Ugh. Both of my hands had to have surgery, had one done in January and the other in November. I still can't close my right hand all the way as I had damaged ligaments. Plus I have my first great grandson and I'm in love with him and like to spend time with them as my granddaughter comes over frequently. In this past year I shifted my routines not to include painting and started filling it up with my friendships which I've so enjoyed. I never thought I'd see this day come. As soon as we go back to our lake house I am determined to get cracking again, I hope.

Dentist - it depends on the dentist. A busy dentist will probably follow some age guideline to make room for new patients. A less busy one is not likely to tell you to go away. Some ped dentists are perfectly capable of treating more advanced problems, some aren't. Doctor - kinda the same issues, how busy are they or aren't then? What most people see a primary care doc for, the age-range training doesn't necessarily lock out young adults from seeing a pediatrician. Although someone focused on seeing little ones may not have an active Rolodex of age appropriate specialists should referrals be needed. For us, it was maybe around 16 years of age in both cases. Different issue, your son's concern about paying attention. He's already gotten through the biggest chunk of his education, why didn't the issue come up before? The drugs given younger kids are controversial, some say they work, some say they don't. Your son is an adult now in any event - drugs are rarely used and he needs to develop techniques and skills that will help him function as an adult, whether or not he has a medical diagnosis. I'd start maybe with a psychologist specializing in the area. But let him know this is something that he needs to take ownership of. Note, indifferent/less motivated students do have trouble paying attention, it has nothing to do with neuro/psychological factors. Could that be at work here? Good luck.

I have to on a daily basis. I live in a small town in rural MI. My shopping choices are quite limited, mostly mart mart discount chains. Almost all are horrid. Any nice retail we had shut down years ago. So sad and unpleasant. In my youth, we had many small retail businesses, and since we all went to school or church together and our folks were in Jaycees or other service clubs or youth clubs together, I knew many of the proprietors and sales people. Shopping was fun. I could not wait for allowance day to walk downtown, stop at the root beer stand, and see what my weekly paycheck would buy . . . not anymore. I would be hard pressed to come up with a store that isn't horrid. Even my local Goodwill, which has great stuff, is a pain because you have to sift through all the stuff and there's that thrift store smell . . . We have a nice antique store in town but I am maxed out on tchotchkes. Some nice farm markets regionally, but not anywhere near me. This is one reason retirees often leave my town for better places to live. Add to that no nice places to go out to eat and a paucity of good medical services. We take monthly shopping trips to the bigger cities and will move to one once my Dad is gone. Grocery shopping is like going into battle, and the selection and quality has gone downhill. And now, long lines and clog ups at the auto checkout. This trend I think will get worse but ultimately not last. Fewer and fewer employees, then automation is the first step in something disappearing all together. Not sure what will take its place. An interesting ponder . . . I think there is a space for savvy entrepreneurs but rents are through the roof which is one reason retail is dying. An odd combination, decaying retail spaces with through the roof rents . . . I grew up with a wonderful smaller grocery stores, in strips along with pharmacies, hardware, fabric and other stores so the grocery was mostly actual grocery items, and then there were wonderful actual farm markets and orchards . . . At this point Mr. Robinson would advise Benjamin Braddock that the future was "warehouses." Edited to add that our local Shopper's Guide advertisement paper flyer just closed. First, it automated and moved all its business offices to virtual, away from our actual town. It also had cumbersome and unreliable means of placing ads, but to add insult to injury, higher rates, way higher and longer lead times. So pretty soon the whole thing went "Pft." It was a great resource in its heyday, which was 2000's. Digital marketplaces are not reliable, not everyone is online or even wants to be. The flyer came in the mail every week, my brother was a delivery boy. With production costs going down, not sure why these actual paper flyers are not able to stay profitable, since paper ads are still a proven effective marketing tool. And then don't get started on the assaults on the mail service. To me, these are big declines in some great institutions. What's replacing it is a mixed bag of a lot of marginal stuff, way less value, IMHO. I studied digital marketing, it is no better than paper as far as time invested vs results . . .

Going to the doctor, even for routine followup, always feels like going to the Principal's office, and my blood pressure reflects it. I have documented "white coat syndrome" and it's marked in my file so nobody gets agitated when it's 180/90.

Dentists have always had the same effect.

I hate paying $10.00 co-pays! I am not too fond of the dentist, doctor's are okay.

I don't mind going to the Doctor, but going to the dentist is right up there with the dread of flying.

$10 copays are a bargain!

I don't mind going. I consider in preventive maintenance, warding off a major breakdown.

I really like my doctors and dentist. Usually my dental trips are just to see the hygienist to get my teeth cleaned.
When I was a kid I dreaded the doctor and dentist.

Especially the dentist. Friday I go to the dentist in the morning and the doctor for my toe in the afternoon. It creeps me out for anyone to touch my feet.

I'm getting it from head to toe.

I have an absolute fear of the dentist and wouldn't you know it this weekend I started to have some tooth pain! Just trying to get up the nerve just to make the call for an appointment. Satine

have a "standing appt" every 3 months w/kidney guy and blood work, oncologist every 6mo...it's the other stuff i'm dragging my feet ordinary yearly tests...

I avoid doctors. Right now I have a sore knee and sore feet, I've been told to go to a Podiatrist and Orthopedist, but I hate to start. I know they'll need Cat scans and MRI's and more junk. So I limp around and put up with the pain.

It doesn't cost me anything, but I don't like to go. They just want to hand me prescriptions for preventative meds and I won't take them. I did take the baby aspirin because of a dizzy spell I had, but in 6 weeks my urine was red orange, so I stopped that. I have to pay for the dentist, but don't mind. Until I turned 65 my insurance was free, so don't mind paying now.

Well, take it from me...don't put off going to the Dentist. I've had about 8 weeks of H3ll with an abscess that I had to have oral surgery on. They had to cut into the bone to remove the infection.

The only good thing about going to the Dentist is there isn't much wait time. However, I've waited for a hour to get into the Doctors "little exam room" then another hour before they came it. Take into account the travel time. Three hours for a Doctor's visit.

I'm increasingly grateful to HAVE excellent MD's and a dentist to go to!

I'm not so happy to add up the costs at the end of the year. Looks like $15K as I start on my 2008 tax return, but $7K was the hip replacement surgeon who doesn't take Medicare but is the #1 orthopod in Chicagoland. Some of that is Medicare Part B and private insurance, too.

I can deal with either, just hate the long wait. I do hate going to the gynocologist, though. What a miserable visit that is.

Going to the doctor is like geting a tune up. I like to ask a lot of questions about my body. I think the human body is so remarkable.

I don't mind going to the dentist, but I do mind paying him a fortune.

I don't like going to the doctor because I always feel the doctor doesn't want to see me--a feeling probably leftover from the twenty years I was in an HMO when the doctors really didn't want to see you!)

Yes, I hate going. But, I hate going a lot of places...some of them very common...like, I hate going to the post office, for example. Pretty crazy, I know.

I decided to get work done on my teeth a while back to replace some old fillings. That wore me out. Normally, I'm ok. I went back in last week because my roots hurt. Good news! It was just sinus pressure from my allergies. I don't mind the doctor either when I get a good one.
