Maybe i'm lucky, but my doctors like the fact that I check on things, keep up with the latest.

I've had numerous sebaceous cysts removed over the years, and never had a staph infection. I did have one abscess last October--that was not fun. So in the future, I will have them removed before they get to that point.

I saw mine yesterday and mentioned a home test that I had read about on the internet (a test that I flunked), I didn't tell her that's where I had read it.. but she said it was the first she had heard of that. She must of believed it though cause she gave me the medicine I wanted without any further tests!

I think we HAVE to do our own research. I was misdiagnosed forever and would have gave up by now if I hadn't been convinced of what was wrong with me from things I'd read on the internet.

Two weeks ago I went back to my Dr. for my check up and my sugar was high - 155! - so she gave me some samples of Janumet to see how they worked for me. When they ran out I called her office and asked for a prescription. The receptionist talked to the Dr. then called my pharmacy, I picked them up and started to take them, noting they were red instead of pink but because I didn't remember the strength of the samples, I couldn't be sure if they were the same or not. After the first day I began to get nauseated. I waited another day or so thinking maybe it would resolve itself and not even making the connection of the new pills. I Googled Janumet and there are 2 strengths and I was taking double the amount of what was needed! So I called and got MORE (2 months' worth!) SAMPLES!! Hooray! ... and a $40 bottle of meds that I won't use. And several apologies. Oh well, I'm just glad I don't feel queasey anymore. I'm glad I can Google! Nancy

I've thought about that, also. I do think though, that there are times when they like it because if a patient can do research on his illness before he goes to the doctor, the doctor doesn't have to do as much explaining and the patient is much more enlightened before he ever walks in the office. I guess they wouldn't want the patient to want to argue about treatment, etc. That would probably make them angry.

My mother died of MRSA. She was in isolation and I was with her all the time. I did not wear masks, gowns and gloves as suggested. She had bedsores and I was always helping the nurses change her dressing. I don't think I have MRSA, but it could be lying dormant in my body.

Some doctors may appreciate the initiave, some would hate to be questioned no matter what.

There are probably several professions that don't like the internet. I went to the car dealers armed with knowledge. "Don't you love the internet." I had all of my side by side comparisions.

Some time ago some of the guys were discussing prostate issues, as some of us have it in our family histories, and one mentioned that he didn't appreciate the doc sticking his/her finger up his rear end to manipulate/investigate the prostate.

I laughed and said, "If you think you got problems ... how would you like to be the doc?" (with your finger in that plastic glove).

Oh, gosh - he'd never thought about that.

Sometimes it helps if we can put our feet into someone else's shoes! What'd the Indian say about the moccasins?

I had a doctor tell me one time when I disagreed with a medicine he wanted to put me on...."I went to medical school...you read a book!!" Actually, I read several books directly on the subject...and guess what? I didn't take his damned medicine. Actually, it was a hormone but the dosage he wanted me to take was 3 times what was suggested. Uh...no thanks.

We all need to educate ourselves about our health. I keep my own medical history writing down dates of doctor visits, reason, diagnosis, tests done and then I get copies of all the results. And I'm fairly healthy. I research on the internet too - but you really need to be aware of the source.

Even Dr. Oz who I like for his practical approach, has mentioned medical studies to reinforce his position - but several of those studies were performed on such a small segment that they are not statiscally significant. It doesn't mean that they are inaccurate, just that larger groups need to be studied.

I think the research prepares you to be a better patient. Your questions are more focused and you can then optomize your appointment time. I even take notes while I'm in the office.

If a physician didn't like that I would find another one and tell the first why I was leaving. However I'm sure many doctors have heard some really bizarre theories suggested by their patients too.

Thousands in this area can't find a doc taking new patients.

So ... if you're fortunate enough to have a doc, you're going to think more than twice ...

... maybe about 37 times ...

... before firing one and going to find a replacement.

I didnt realize MRSA was so bad.Theres about 6 cases just on one shift at dialysis.

I DON'T care if they don't like it...I'm goin in for surgery Monday morning...I've read everything I can read...it's taught me to ask questions, Dr's are humans first and Doctors second...it's my life their messing with and in this case, my ability to do my job which in essence is my livelihood...so yeah I'm gonna keep on reading and keep on asking questions...geesh last night I dreamed he operated on the WRONG shoulder...gads...I'm getting nervous!

Liz - I hear you! I had knee surgery 3 years ago performed by an orthopedic surgeon that I've known for 20 years. Before they knocked me out he asked me which knee was scheduled for arthroscopy and when I touched my right knee he drew something on it with a marker. When I asked him about it he said it was his way of double and triple checking body parts. He said that neither of us wanted to read about another surgeon operating on the wrong leg in the paper the next day.
