How to make my own flavored ground coffee?

I know there are all sorts of syrups to put in coffee but what I'm trying to figure out how to make my own is, you know how you can buy French Vanilla ground coffee(or beans) or Mocha flavored ground coffee etc. Like for instance Dunkin Donuts ground coffee has a delicious French Vanilla. But couldn't I flavor my own? Say add some Vanilla extract to some ground coffee, stir, and place in the filter? What do y'all think? If this would work, how much vanilla extract would I add for a full pot of coffee? The reason I want to make my own is the ridiculous price they are charging for these flavored coffees when I can buy a huge tub of Maxwell house for less than a 12 oz package of flavored! UGH! The reason I don't want to use syrup is the sweetness...I don't want the sweet flavoring.

Put a few fresh vanilla bean pods in a jar of suger.

You will have vanilla flavored sugar.

I'm sure there are others on here that will have more professional and better ideas than I.

Like you, I don't want the sweetness of the flavored creamers and syrups.

I am the only one here that enjoys the flavored coffees.
So I see no sense in paying the high prices charged for them.

So every now and then I will just add a few drops of extract to one cup of coffee.

Tastes good, and is very economical.

If the grounds are dumped in piles, they have a tendency to settle into a water-resistant mass. Either sprinkle them lightly around the plant (like salt over fries) or mix the grounds 50/50 with some soil or compost, to prevent clumping. Otherwise, there doesn't seem to be a maximum because the coffee will gradually decompose. Many people do limit the fresh coffee grounds to those plants which prefer a slightly acidic soil, but once the grounds have decomposed, the resulting compost is nearly neutral.

Hello Mirendajean - you've said elsewhere that you are a transplanted American gardener and I don't know where you've gardened before so forgive me if you know all this already. But you might find that techniques which work in much of the US will not be too helpful in Ireland. You've said you live on a bog so your ground is likely damp and acidic. The rushes happily growing in your garden show just how wet it is there. Under these conditions heavy mulching is not always helpful, at least not thick layers of leaves. The ones I see in your picture are Sycamore (UK usage of that name ie Acer pseudoplatanus) and they can create a thick mat of impenetrable soggy leaves which can spell death under our climatic conditions. Plus the heap in your photo will quite likely rot the fence in the constant damp. Making a leaf mould bin ie a simple chicken wire ring would produce something usable by next year. It is a useful soil conditioner and mulch once it has broken down. Annpat is right that leafmould is leaves only and not to be confused with compost. If you talk about 'tilling' to your neighbours they will envisage you getting out a machine, if they understand at all. They'll talk about 'digging', and they'll probably use a fork for it. Or maybe a spade - never a shovel. I think it would be well worth talking to the locals because you have a particular set of conditions there which they will understand. The plants which will thrive for you will be things like heathers, rhododendrons, fuchsias and other acid lovers which will enjoy the mild climate. A classic over there is Arbutus unedo - a lovely little tree. Also, as you've noticed, grass grows almost all year round so edging your flowerbeds properly will save you a lot of grief keeping the grass out of the beds. That involves cutting a vertical sided channel around your beds with spade or edging iron.

The funny thing that got me ready for motherhood the most was that while I was pregnant with Rhiannon and couldn't get a teaching job, I worked in a nursing home. I did just about anything, and towards the end I did mostly baths. After changing all the adult undergarments a babies diaper was nothing. Also learned lots of tricks about putting on clothes on those who aren't cooperative. But the biggest thing was that we had residents that couldn't eat solids so every meal that they served, they would put in a blender. It could be a ham sandwich, pizza, roast, apple pie, broccolli, anything that the regular meals consisted of was purreed for the residents who needed help eating or didn't have teeth or other problems. I learned so much about respecting the elderly and have such an appreciation for them now because of my experiences. Stacie

Do you have Bailey's Irish Cream in the pantry? Best way in the world to flavor coffee! Any other liqueur would work...Frangelico, Amaretto, etc. Lacking Bailey's, you could put a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drop or two of orange extract in the basket with the ground coffee. How much would depend on your taste and the amount of coffee you are brewing. Or, if there is any eggnog in the fridge, it makes an interesting creamer. If you like mocha flavors, you could add a spoonful or so of instant cocoa mix to your cup of coffee.

Torani makes sugar-free syrups, but there's still the sweet flavor.

I add whatever extract I want to freshly ground coffee beans, just before brewing. Cinnamon and unsweetened cocoa are also nice.

petra, how much vanilla extract for a full pot of coffee do you think I should add?

BTW, I don't want sweetness..so the sugar with vanilla beans is out as is the sugar free syrup flavors(artificial sweeteners added)

I would make a test batch with maybe 1/4 tsp, add a little at a time until you reach your desired strength. I'm not crazy about flavored coffees but occasionally add a shake of two of cinnamon in the coffee ground before brewing. Vanilla is a flavoring and added last to most recipes. Tastes vary and you are pleasing your own taste buds.

A bit of powdered cinnamon in the filter basket is good , and the black seeds in a vanilla pod are good stored in with your ground coffee.
I don't much care for "extracts" but for vanilla. Give me the real thing...

I take cinnamon sticks and break them into the filter basket along with the coffee...

Yeah, the broken cinnamon sticks in the filter work really well. I've also put a couple drops of raspberry oil on coffee beans before grinding them. You can usually find it where candymaking supplies are sold.

Arkansas, I like it very vanilla-ey, so I add a teaspoon of extra strength per pot.

Cinnamom can be sprinkled on top the grounds before brewing... to your taste. About a quarter teaspoon per pot is my dose.

Cardamon! Sprinkle a pinch over the coffee grounds before brewing. Cardamon is fairly expensive but a small jar last a long time for me... also sprinkle it on burgers and it gives nice scent to my bread.

No mixing required. Make a flavor when you feel like it and straight coffee when you don't. I get flavor worn easy so I switch things up.

Oh, forgot to mention, sometimes I like to add a little bit of raspberry extract (a little goes a long way) along with the cocoa, to make chocolate-raspberry coffee. Very tasty with a bit of whipped cream on top. :o)
