It's hard to see from this picture, but this was my living room until a few months ago. Both rugs were patterned and about 18 inches separated the two of them. The patterns didn't match but the colors were found in both rugs. I've since updated the room and now I have a blue and white striped rug in the main seating around (at the far end of the room as you look at the photo) and an off-white braided rug in front of the fireplace.

These are the rugs in my dining room, entry and living room, all of which are open to one another. I think that they work together because of commonality of colors and some variation of scale to the patterns.

I try to get rugs that are of similar style (more traditional) and colors. I don't try to match, but what I like is when one rug has a lighter background and the other a darker background and the predominant colors of one are the accent colors of the other.

Wow - I am so glad to see all the mixing of different area rugs! I think I just need to go out of my comfort zone and go with another patterned rug for the living room that shares some similar colors and patterns with the one in the dining room. I am sure I will be back with help with selection.

My door plan is fairly open I have the same pattern on my family room, dining room and a couple of runners BUT I ordered them in 2 different colors. One is a cream with pattern and the other is a light teal with the same pattern. Mine are from Capel. I'm happy with the look. I have lots of other patterns/fabric so semi matcha rugs work well for me.

Another with an open floor plan. We have used 3 area rugs on the first floor. All rugs are different, but do have certain colors in common. They all get along fine, but definitely do not match.

. Our entry is limestone and the adjacent LR is wood flooring. We have an entry rug and one in the LR that are visually separated by a sofa and sofa table.

Here's another pair. ÃÂ The large rug is in the library, mostly a tomato red, with cream, green, blue and some black and yellow. ÃÂ The hall runner is dark yellow with red, green and gray.

I love all the pictures and the rugs. I guess it is best to think of area rugs as art work for the floor. You don't normally hang 2 pieces of the same art on your walls so the same goes for your floors.

Good analogy, Rob2342. The combination can be pleasing because of a similar feeling in colors, pattern, texture, size, etc. It doesn't take much for two rugs to get along :-)
