lazy kid!!!!!!!

I have an unmarried, pregnant, unemployed 21 year old daughter who is so lazy I could SCREAM!!

I asked her to clean out a closet for me, while she was laying on the couch watching tv. I waited to I was sure she wasn't going to get up and do it.

When I started the job myself she came in griping about having to do it, and that I didn't give her enough time to get to it.

We argued about her laziness.She told me she hates to clean up after me then she just leaves to go take a bath.I told her I have cleaned up after her for 21 years.

I told her she needed to find a place to go where they liked lazy. Her boyfriend has a job, better than some, but she wants him to get a better paying one so they can move out. I asked if there was any way to hurry it along.

I'm so sick of this kid taking advantage. GRRRRRRRRR

Is there any reason why she can't get a job ?

Does the boyfriend live there too ?

Don't ask her if they can hurry it along - TELL her she has to leave. Then give her a deadline and stick to it. Of course she's taking advantage, because you're allowing her to(sounds like her boyfriend is parked in your house, too). Trust me, if you let her stay until after the baby is born, you'll be doing child care on top of everything else because she'll be a lazy mother AND a lazy daughter. Was it YOUR decision to have a baby? No, it was THEIRS, and it's time for them to put on their big-kid pants, grow up, and start acting responsible.
Toughen up, Mom (or is this Dad?) and get them out A.S.A.P. or your life will never be your own again.
Take it from someone who had (and still has) a lazy son - when he refused to get his act together at age 20, I gave him fair warning, then followed through and tossed him out. He's now 31, married, a father, and is STILL unmotivated. Not my problem. And your daughter's foolish choices aren't yours, either. Best of luck.

I realize it's 5 years later, but I am posting my experiences for anyone else who may be reading this thread. I am a parent of a middle-school boy with attention-type ADHD. He was diagnosed in 4th grade and has been on medication since the last marking period of 4th grade. Yes, middle school teachers in general expect a student to turn in homework without being reminded. The students also have to take initiative to discover what work was missed during an absence (classwork and homework) and make up that work as well. All without teacher reminders. For my son, with ADHD and braces, who missed a lot of classes for dental appointments, this could have been a *disaster*. Medications can help. They can help enormously. And there are a whole class of stimulant medications that wear off by the end of the day, thus appetite returns and growth is not inhibited. Metadate is one; my son takes this with very positive results. Another thing that helps is ORGANIZATION. I have really got to hand it to our school system here in Maryland. Our 6th graders are assigned a binder system. The school has created a layout for how the 6th grade binder should look - where the notebook paper goes, how many tabbed dividers there should be and how they are labelled, where the pencil pouch should be and what is in it, sections for each school subject. Fantastic. They also are given an agenda book that they are required to fill in every day. It covers homework for each class and a section for brief notes or reminders. Our schools also have a program called AVID that begins in middle school. During AVID class, the binders are checked for neatness and adherence to the organizational system. Students are graded on their organization! The agendas are also checked to make sure they are being filled out properly and consistently. The kids are also taught how to take notes, how to study, and how to work through a problem that you don't understand, be it math or ancient Egypt. They work in small groups to work through these types of problems and answer each other's questions. I highly highly recommend it!

Check with your wallpaper retailer about this. I think there's something, (maybe called wall size) that you use first, just to avoid the issues you are concerned about. 10 years ago, I happily added a border to the small laundry room off my kitchen. When we remodeled that laundry about 3 years later, I needed to remove the border for new paint. I don't even remember how many hours it took to get it all off. It was horrible. Fast forward to my current house and we have another small laundry that came with a border. I put off repainting in there for 2 years because I just couldn't face the arm pain and hassle of removing the previous owners "hanging the laundry" border. But when I finally got to the job, it came off easily. I could tell they had done the wall prep before applying that border. Red

What does your dh do about this? Is he on her case or does she blow him off as well? Maria: Dh keeps her on her toes when he is home. But as soon as he walks out the door...yeah you get the picture. I stepped out of it, I won't tell her what she needs to be doing. She knows. So pretty much she just does what she is told when he is here to make sure it is getting done. He works all week, so I think she has been counting on that with all this "time off", and thinking she is on vacation. Also, we don't know of anyone who can hire her. She used to babysit for my friend. That did not go well. For several reasons. I am also no longer friends with that friend because of her involvement in issues with my sd. She didn't watch the kids. She let them run amok in the house and trash it while she sat and watched t.v. or talked on the phone. Poppin': Thanks for the words. I hear ya! I don't think she will ever do better than C's and D's. Lucky if there are C's. I don't get what they think is so hard about school either. Like I said, my son brought his grades up in the given amount of time, there was no reason why sd could not have done the same thing... she even went down in some grades. Cuz she had a couple of B's. A 'C' in chorus? How does that happen??? who the heck knows, school is obviously not important to her. What irks me is that she talks the talk to her dad and counselor. they both say that they don't see the results or the evidence that she does care...but what do you do with a kid who would rather do nothing? Because she just isn't "social". She has fun when she does do something with someone. But it is almost like it is just too much effort for her to call and maintain a friendship with anyone. today her dad came home for lunch and she asked if she could get on the computer and check her mail. He said for 30 minutes if she gets her stuff done. (that is pretty much the standing rule here, no fun till chores are done). Well, he leaves back for work and she gets on the computer right away. Stays on it for 2 hours...until I finally had enough ( I wasn't going to get involved) and I just couldn't let her sit there and mess around any longer when nothing was getting done. I told her dad. He just said she doesn't need to be on the computer for awhile. I am thinking...okay...but thats it? I mean, it is just blatant disregard and all she says is "sorry". @@ that is all she always says, and it isn't even sincere. I could just scream. :::sigh::::: I just hope she has more hours on her schedule next week. Damn well better, or I just might find a whole lotta things that need cleaning etc for her to do. How about cooking us a dinner for a change? She is going to be 17 after all and should freakin' know how to cook more than Ramen noodles @@.

That would get 'old' really fast. My kids have been fortunate in that all schools (GS through HS)have been a spit from our front door. All on one piece of property less than 1 to 2 blocks from home (depending on building). I did take the ones in GS to school in mornings and pick-up in afternoon. Not because they could not walk but because it was safer. The parents would zip in and out like crazed road racers trying to get kid to school and off to the city by x time. Or it was the HS kids driving to school like the crazed road racers with a bit of showing off how 'cool' they were in their monster trucks. There was never any thought or concern over any kid who might happen to get in their way. By the time my kids were across the field in the HS building (direct shot from my front door and a slow street) they were on their own in getting there and home. In your case, IMO, any kid who can run around for a few hours at football practice can hike it home less than a mile. Any kid who 'forgot' something 1)can do without forgotten object 2)walk over and get it, or 3)let Dad swing by and pick it up on his way home. The only one who might have gotten a last minute notice ride from me would have been the kid who had to be at work. Is it the kids or the parents? I think it's a bit of both. But as a parent I would not impose on another adult to haul my kids around to places/events that were in safe walking distances except for in the event of extreme weather and/or an emergency. If I wanted to play chauffeur, fine, but the kids would have to understand that when and if I were not available they have two healthy feet that can replace me now and then. Taking advantage of someone else's day off to run my busy, lazy (?) kids would not be an option.

I agree with emmi. Kids don't take advantage of parents...in my view, parents let themselves be taken advantage of. Might the parent enjoy being needed, enjoy being able to be a victim, enjoy having a feeling of being indispensible...etc etc.?

Define rules and enforce them. If they aren't followed, then have consequences that you stick with. Stick with being the key words.

My sister has a lazy daughter, too. My niece just turned 50.
She allowed her DD, who was 6 months pregnant, and her DD's boyfriend to move in until after the baby was born.
That was over 12 years ago....My sister, who will soon be 83, does everything for everyone in the house. My niece is so lazy my sister has to hire a housekeeper because no one picks up after themselves.

She is not only hurting you but herself as well. She is at a loss of self esteem I am sure, maybe even self-confidence. She needs to do something for herself to feel good about herself. Maybe if you explain the need for her to get a job or go to school for her own self,to develop a better feeling of herself and some pride, would go a long way!

My daughter is 13....and the last 6 months have been tough, acting up, getting in trouble, grades slipping, etc. She was always a good kid, top honors student, etc.

I've already started to tell her that this is how it goes:

If you do well in school, we will pay for your college and have the best years of your life, and you can live here when not at school as long as you do well. Then you are out.

If you continue to f*ck up in school, I am not going to waste all the thousands of dollars we've been saving for you on college if you have demonstrated that you don't take your studies seriously. If that happens, you graduate from highschool, turn 18 and you are out. Have fun working in a diner when all your friends are away at college having the best years of their lives.

Its up to you which one of these you choose....oh and if you ever get pregnant, don't for a second think me and your mother are raising the kid for you....good luck with that.

There is NO way my kids will leach off me as adults. Temporary assistance here and there, is one thing...failing to grow up because mom and/or dad are taking care of you is another thing.

Your kid needs some tough love or this will never end.....

What I don't get is that you told her to clean the closet, you waited a while, then YOU started cleaning it. What? If you told HER to do it, why on earth did you lift a finger to start it? I'm so sorry, but if that's how you're dealing with the situation, you're a big contributor to it.

My daughter knew that as long as she was in school, and making adequate grades, she could live home for free. But in the summer, and as soon as she graduated, she paid board. I didn't mind her living here, but I believe in teaching children that they do have to pay their own way. She also was expected to pitch in around the house, and to abide by the house rules (no matter how old she was--it is, after all, our home). Luckily, we were in a position where we didn't really need the board she paid, so I banked it in a separate account. When she was established in her career, and bought herself a condo, I handed her a passbook with thousands of $$$ in it--her board.

If you truly want opinions, no pregnant 21 year old should be sponging off her parents. She should be going to school AND working, she should be paying board--she's not a 5 year old, after all. And she should be pitching in around the house WITHOUT complaining. A breach of any of those would put my child on the fast track to an eviction. You really do need to stand up for yourself here. More importantly, you need to stand up for your DAUGHTER--we do our children no favors by NOT expecting them to be responsible adults. If you don't make her grow up, who will?
