Help.......'Vegetable Peelers'

I just broke my old Vegetable peeler, and I need to know what type to buy. The one that I had was so old, I don't think they make them anymore. It's time to buy a new one. What do you use? I need a good one. Help!!! Thank you !!! Diana55 P.S...I mostly use it for Potatoes & Carrots.

My husband gave me a Farberware peeler. It has a thicker handle with finger holds, so it is easy on the hand; the blade swivels enough but not too much; and it is sharp! I do a lot of canning and freezing, therefore a lot of peeling, and I am extremely happy with it.

No help from me, I have always used a paring knife. Makes my DH crazy, says I waste too much but I can peel a potato in no more than two swirls!! LOL

I have an OXO peeler. Sounds like it and the Farberware that marlingardener have a lot in common. Sometime ago Cooks Illustrated tested various peelers. My recollection is that they did not like the Y shaped peelers, although I saw Ina Garten use one the other day. I would suggest if you were happy with the general shape of the one that broke, you get another in that same shape.

Kuhnrikon Y peeler for potatoes, butternut squash and most everything except carrots - its that OXO peeler for carrots. But if the OXO ever broke, I wouldn't replace it - I'd just use the Y peeler - I love it.

Diana, I prefer to have my hand perpendicular to the vegetable - if that makes any sense? That's probably what Woodie was talking about. But I prefer my Cutco peeler. I've thrown two of them away _ I guess - with the peels - but had to replace...

My favorite has a black, softish, rubber handle that is somewhat rounded and somewhat flat. It's very comfortable to use. Sorry, no name on it.

I also have an OXO peeler..

I had a Y-peeler and liked it a lot. Then out of curiousity I bought the Oxo that CI rated so highly. Now I have no idea where my Y-peeler is.

My favorite is the Cutco Peeler, also. Aunt got all the "girls" one for Christmas one year & I told her if she ever had the opportunity, to get me another one! Best gift she ever got me.

I have both the OXO and the Kitchenaid and like them each. I guess it depends on how you use them. I peel with mine not "whittle" :)

Count me as a fan of the Swiss "Y" peelers. I buy a couple of them every few years, because I tend to lose them. Love them.

I love the Zyliss peeler. Very comfortable in the hand and very sharp. Good price, too.

I think I have about 4 Y peelers in the drawer, priced from pennies and big dollars. I like them all.

Another Kuhn Rikon fanatic, but I think what works best for you matters most.

I have one with a ceramic blade.....love it!
My pet peeve is to go visit friends, get asked to help peel vegetables and then find out they have the oldest, dullest and cheapest peeler ever made.

I like the Y-shaped kind, and it doesn't matter if it's cheap or more expensive, as long as it is SHARP. You don't realize how dull the one you've used every day for a few years has gotten until you get a new one, even a cheapo.

elery has one of those ceramic ones, he loves it. I have an OXO, I use it for carrots and parsnips.

Like chase, I peel with a paring knife and can do an apple or a potato in one long swirl and faster than either of my girls can peel with a peeler.

Thanks everyone.......I went out looking today, and I bought a OXO peeler, and I used it tonight, and I really like it. I also ordered online a set of Messermeister peelers. Segregated, non segregated, and a Julianne peeler. They are suppose to be good. They look a lot like the OXO peeler. I'll give one to my Sister-in-law,after I decide which one I like the best.I had to peel potatoes at her house one day, and her peeler was pathetic ( DULL) !!! LOL Thanks for your ideas !!! Diana55 P.S....I have a hard time peeling with a Paring knife, because it takes me way to long, and I waste so much of the Potato !!!
