Teenage boy shaving?

Hi All,

I am a mother of 14yrs boy. He is insisting that he would like to shave his very light mustache. Though it is visible it is not that thick to shave. I think that he is too young to shave and also he does not realize that it is not one day affair.

My question is Âam I right? Is he not too young to shave already? Also if he starts shaving should I have to take any precautions apart from cutting the skin? Please advice.

I don't think it will hurt him to shave. At that age, it will take a long time for it to grow back enough to shave again. Just because he shaves it doesn't mean it's going to grow back overnight. My boys had enough facial hair to start shaving around 15 or so, but at that point they were only shaving about once every several weeks.

Let him. Find him some nice shaving gel or foam and a good safety razor and let him practice. Fluff can look quite silly on a boy, and why would you ever discourage good grooming? There will be days you wish he wanted to shave and would do so.

Our house is THE hang out house for my very social son and his friends. On Friday night, my husband and I were having a quiet dinner in the kitchen when my 16 year old son boiled up from the basement--along with 7 of his pals! They ransacked the kitchen looking for a dessert. I offered them a semi-freddo (Italian frozen cream dessert) I had made for a dinner party but had not served. Their faces lighted up; they fell on it like vultures, and there was only a small morsel left! Our house has always been the magnet for my son's friends. We remodeled the basement some 4 years ago--it is very cozy, and has a big-screen TV, gas fireplace, foosball, bathroom, and refrigerator and freezer (stocked with lots of Trader Joe's foods). It's private, we put in lots of soundproofing--so the noise doesn't bother us--the furniture is comfortable, and they play music, watch movies, and play video games, and have access to my cooking. Our older daughter is away at college, so there are no other siblings around. I'm delighted that our house is the hang out, but I will admit that when schools here were closed for some 9 days (due to the snow) it became a bit much. It felt like I was living in a frat house.

Last night around 11:30PM my time, I accidentally posted this thread on the wrong side of our forum. I'm a morning person and usually up at 5:30AM. I've now come to the conclusion that I should NOT be allowed to post online after 9PM, as this is the second time I've done that in the past month(LOL)! "Now she tells me that she and her bestfriend are on a quest for adventure." I wouldn't worry about it. From what you have written, she is a good kid. Their idea of adventure is probably not as crazy as you imagine it to be. Yesterday on my bus to work (I commute from NH to Boston) there were two 16 yo or so girls. Giggling away, excited about their day in the city. I saw them on my way home as well, and they obviously had a great day. Maybe that is the type of excitement your daughter means? A little innocent, but still "adult-ish" adventure with her friend? When I was your daughter's age I had a car (well, at 16 1/2) and my best friend and I had a ball. We never got in trouble. Going to a town 20 miles away seemed like and adventure. During the summer we'd drive the hour to the beach and spend all day eating fried dough, getting burned, people watching. Now that I think of it, those sunburns were the most dangerous thing we did!

Your friend, the mom, is way too involved. I had two best friends that had small crushes on my husband before we dated, and I recall having crushes on guys in highschool that my friends ended up going out with. All were pretty minor crushes though. I would guess this may be more than just a little crush that the friend had. Was she talking about and following him around, etc? Sometimes in those really heavy crush situations, friends do sort of respect the boundaries. My first reaction was to say that boyfriends come and go, but that girl friends are usually more important in the long run. But, I think that is something everyone needs to learn for themselves from their own experiences. I have a feeling everything will settle down once the couple go out and break up (which they probably will do sooner or later). Although, your daughter may become known as a boyfriend stealer...not really her fault, but be prepared. This one relationship may hurt her reputation and her popularity. And, sadly I think she may find out too late that it probably wasn't worth it. But what else are the teenage years really for if not to learn from trial and error? Bottom line though, it's really nothing either of the mother's should be involved in. I can't understand the other mother's hatred of your daughter. I don't really think there's a good answer or solution when the other mother is just acting so irrational.

And it is a myth that hair grows back faster and thicker etc.. I really dislike facial hair on men, looks nasty on "most" men. I wouldn't recognize my own son across the street with all the hair he has on his face. In my opinion they loose their individuality, they all look alike..

How about an electric razer? They don't work great for people who get a 5:00 shadow, but it sounds like it would work well for him.

The issue too isn't "is he ready to shave" It's "is Mom ready to admit her baby is really that grown up that he's ready to shave". How do our babies grow up that fast and get older when we don't. I hate that, don't you. Yes Mom, he did, sad isn't it. Get that picture for your scrap book, your baby is growing up.

None of the above was meant to be mean, or ill spirited, trust me, I've been there..my babies are grown up, one has a baby of her own. The other should really shave his back!!

My husband, very Italian, was shaving in the sixth grade. So, I wasn't surprised when my son started about that age too. I would rather see a bit of thicke stubble than that fine hair that makes them look dirty all the time, if you know what I mean, LOL! Plus, I love it when he smells nice from the shaving cream. He hates, though, because I smooch on him. ;>D

Mine got an electric razor for his 12th birthday!
(And he needed it)

If he's interested, use that to get the job done!
I'm totally with Houseful about that fuzz just making them look dirty.

Shhhh....DD#1 is a hairdresser..she was over yesterday cutting her brothers hair (he's 24)...she uses the hair clippers on his back too....he said it's way better than when he tried to wax his back...WWWWAAAAYYYY less painful!!! But don't tell anyone I told you he does get his back shaved...
