A good place to visit with a seven year old?

I posted this question on the 'vacations board', but I didn't get many responses. I'm trying to plan our vaction we have one son who is seven years old (actually he will be 8 in May) anyway, can anyone tell me a great vacation spot to go with a child? I live in WV, so I prefer to stay in the east. We've been to Disney World--we love it but can't afford it this year. We were thinking about going to Hershey Park in PA and Gettysburg but I'm afraid Gettysburg will bore my son. I'd love any ideas from you? Thanks so much!

My grandmother took me on a trip when I was 11 to Gettysberg, hershey park (saw the factory but no rides), We went to The Snyder Pretzel factory, Philadelphia to see the Franklin Mint, Liberty Bell etc.. and then to DC to see the Smithsonian. I loved it and I wasnt much of a history buff and still dont have much of an interest. Our 8yr old would love it, he loves to read about war. I also went to Lake Placid NY when I was 8, got to see Santas Village and lots of fishing spots if he likes that. I am not sure his interests, Our son would love to go anywhere fishing and canoeing for a week. Niagara Falls is not to far but to have fun you need lots of money for all the attractions.

Williamsburg Virginia! They have a lot of kid friendly stuff....like tricorn hats...mock battles....people in costume crafts for kids...and history.
Took our son there when he was 7....wondering if he would get anything out of it....and he sat bolt upright in bed one night....said "Thomas Jefferson"...and fall back down...sound asleep!....so something was sinking in! LOL!
Also...the outter banks are great for kids....and if you want to drive a bit how about Sturbridge Village, Plymouth plantation, Boston and The Cape?

Buy him a game. The Reading Rabbit and Jump Start series are excellent. The childrens' sites on the web are not always a safe place for him to be, especially if he knows how to navigate the web. You would have to be checking his access to them all the time. You also do not want to encourage him to go to chat rooms as these are a favorite place for kooks that like to prey on children. I have seen some of the sites that my 10 year old g'son gets to, and I do not think that all of them are suitable. Learning games are interesting and will keep him amused with a mimimum of your time. There are even ones for the toddler age group. They are not expensive and are well worth every dime. I assume that he may be in the fourth grade. Get him those designed for the fifth grade. They will strenghten his skills. The simplest "Sim City" games are also good. Stay away from the Disney things as they are just too, too, cutsey to interest a boy.

No doubt you old friend has some hopes and dreams ... don't we all? I'll bet she'll like to talk about them. And maybe if they are sort of the pie-in-the-sky kind, talking about them, and maybe referring to some of the specific plans and actions needed to get there may start him/her thinking of the practicalities, and begin to make some concrete plans and begin taking steps to fulfill them. Especially important if s/he hasn't taken any, up till now. Pie in the sky doesn't taste very good if only half baked. And the cherries, flour and shortening just sitting separately in storage don't taste too hot, either. Who knows ... ... maybe you have some hopes and dreams of your own? And talking of them might help you realize that, if you've made few moves aimed at achieving them, thus far, it may be time to do some good thinking ... and taking some actions. HTH. ole joyful

Robo, it sounds like you had fun! I missed this post so I'm glad you gave an update. Mayflowers, thank you so much for the colored salt jar idea. That can be one of the crafts I do with my grandsons next time we do a sleepover. My DGSs spent the night last night. I got out my markers, colored pencils, oil pastels, graphite pencils and an assortment of papers. While they were working on their drawings I was playing music. My oldest DGS asked if it was Beethoven. As soon as they were finished with their project they had out their iPads and were listening to Whip NaeNae. I videoed the oldest DGS doing the dance and we sent it and pictures of their artwork to Mom. Bedtime is still a problem with the boys, they are only fifteen months apart and they pick on each other unmercifully at bedtime. I'm going to order a cot bunk bed for them as the second queen size inflatable mattress bit the dust.

Thanks all! I appreciate it! Yeah, I assumed it was pretty much toast when I was medicating it last night and the needles just started falling off with the spray of the water. I'm going to go to the local tree farm this weekend and see about getting a replacement. If I'm able to get a replacement, once I dig it up, I'll post the photos of what I find underneath. RE: tsugajunkie, it wasn't burlapped/twined when it was planted. It was maybe 3.5-4 feet tall. I would have gotten it at Lowe's or Home Depot and planted according to directions (hole twice as big, etc.). It sits on a hill so it's very well drained - BUT - I did find a small mushroom growing at the base of the truck when I pulled back the mulch to medicate it. That was the only thing unusual that I could see.

My in-laws live in Columbus, and we have been to the Columbus Zoo several times, which in my opinion is one (if not the best)zoo in the east. I've been to the DC zoo and although it was great the Columbus zoo is even better! :)

There is also the Crayola Factory in Easton, PA right on the NJ border. I used to live maybe 10 mins. from there. Columbus Zoo is also cool (I'm from Ohio originally). Maybe the Pro Football Hall of fame in Canton? (that might be stretching it a bit unless he likes sports!)

There's lot's to do in Pittsburgh if you want a close by big(ish) city experience. They have brand new football and baseball stadiums. Lots of very good museums. Kennywood Park is a great amusement park with old time rides and new super rollercoasters. They also have in the summer lots of festivals at Point State Park and they have a big regatta festival on the rivers with speed boat racing, etc.
