Staining a new redwood deck

Although there are many good products, would linseed oil alone be sufficient to preserve the wood? Also, do the boards require preservation on all sides (bottom of the deck?)

I recommend you follow the advise given by the California Redwood Assn.

Mark- I live in Pacifica. My full time gig is in Menlo Park, but I work all over the area. I get almost all the outdoor wood from Empire Lumber in Belmont. Mike always gives me good prices and the pick of the stack. Hardwood and specialty ply- I buy from Aura in San Jose. You're right about the quality of all Redwood these days, It's nothing like the old growth stuff. I found an old 4x4 Redwood post the other day, and was cutting it for kindling. I couldn't believe the rings! They were too fine to even count. I polished the surface with a razor blade to bring out the grain. Then I got a magnifying glass and started counting. There are about 300 rings on that 4x4! There is a stretch in the middle that appears to represent a drought that lasted for over 100 years, with a pattern of 10 to 20 years of almost no growth interspersed with one or two years of significant growth. What an amazing record of natural history an old redwood tree holds! Compare that to a redwood 4x4 at a box store with only about 10 rings in the cross section. The new Redwood does not have anywhere close to the same rot resistance. The 4x4 with 300 rings will last about 30 times longer without rotting. I think tree farming is a waste of the environment just like cutting old growth. The wood is crap, the habitat is worthless, and the energy used to harvest the wood over and over is a bad deal on the environment. How many acres of tree farmed redwood does it take to equal one old growth tree? The tree farm land will never becaom a mature forest habitat. The 1,000 year old tree has wood that will last for 50 years or more. The tree farmed tree takes 30 years to grow, but the wood only lasts 10 years. I never source wood from Home Depot. Like I mentioned, sometimes I'll get onesies or twosies from the Home Depot Pro in Daly City, if we end up short. Most of the lumber and sheet goods there are a total joke.

Redwood is available in various grades, as I just learned, and we just replaced an 800 sq. ft. deck. It is not super expensive if you get the lower grades, but for deck longevity, you might want to fork out the $ upfront and get the best quality you can afford. Your realtor is misinformed. It's not illegal. I live in CA where it's harvested (controlled) daily and every lumberyard has it. Good luck!

We will actually allow redwood to dry a month or so, but not for the reasons stated. I just feel, the drier the surface is, the better the penetration. There is no stain/sealer that will look like fresh redwood. The approximations are not even close. Basically your choices are on the brownish side or the orange/red side. I would suggest sampling on scraps of the same material. Don't rely on the sample sticks, which are not the same as your material. You will most likely have to clean and prep, as John says. Do not use a pressure washer. The redwood is too soft for anyone but the most experienced users.

Best Naturaltone Redwood Stain for Siding and Decks?

I need help choosing a product to re-stain our outbuildings and deck. Several years ago, I used Olympic Naturaltone Redwood semi-transparent stain. I loved the color because it looked like natural redwood, not a bright orange or red color, but a more subtle reddish brown natural wood color. When I checked to see if Olympic still makes this product, I discovered quite a few negative reviews that stated that the naturaltone redwood is now a really orange color. If this product has changed colors, I know I won't be happy with it. Can anyone suggest another stain that might be more like the old Olympic Naturaltone Redwood? I hate picking colors and just want the color I used before. Any help would be much appreciated.

Forget you ever THOUGHT of Linseed oil!!!

It's a very slow-drying oil, and doesn't do well outside for any length of time.
I'd use it ONLY for low-priority items that can easily be moved inside often....small tables, carvings, etc.

My Redwood deck is 12+ yrs.-old.
* This is in Fargo, ND...where temps go from -35 to a couple of 95-100 deg. readings every year.
* Humidity is all over the map too.
* Physical orientation: West side, Zero shade, 6' off ground. Full sun from 11am.
* I had first applied Penofin back in '96 when it was new.
* Since about 2000, I've been using SIKKENS SRD Semi-transparent. It's all I've used since.

NOTE: Redwood is soft, but VERY dimensionally stable outside.
* You WILL have to sand horizontal surfaces every 3-4 years to keep that "new" look.
* I've got lots of pics of my deck, if I can just find them on my computer! (You can maybe search on the 'Decks' forum too. I've posted some pics there too...)
* I sanded all my spindles last summer, along with sanding between them where they attach to the 2x8 Redwood skirtboards. THAT was fun...but had to be done.
* No matter HOW GOOD a stain is...it can't do everything.
* Periodic sanding gives you NEW wood again, that will ABSORB & HOLD new stains evenly.
* Sanding removes degraded/crumpled wood fibers, exposing more rigid/open structures.
* Cleaning is important too...BUT...doesn't do ANYTHING to remove many old fibers.

Sooooo...my deck stain of choice...Sikkens SRD.
I LOVE the Redwood #089 color.
If our store dropped Sikkens...people up here would HANG us!!
(I went through almost THREE 5G pails when I did our fence last summer...@ $170 per 5-er. Gallons are ~ $35/gal.)

Finishes

Redwood takes and holds finishes better than most other woods. For long lasting good looks and performance, a quality water repellent finish containing a mildewcide and an ultraviolet inhibitor is recommended For best results, the finish should be applied directly to the lumber before construction covering all sides, edges and ends. A second application is recommended when the deck is completed.

Seems pretty easy to decide after reading that.

These guys recommend a product by Flood or Cabot for refinishing a deck. Might be a good source of info for you.
