Need advice regarding cabinet door prep for paint

I just bought a display kitchen from a kitchen design store that went out of business. Got an excellent deal, but I have issues.

I want to paint the doors, which I might add are already painted, I just don't care for the glazed look. I believe the doors are paint grade maple. A few of the doors are split at the seams at the corner. I'll need to fill these in. What is the best product to use?

I would not try to fill that miter with anything; it has opened up because the ambient humidity is too low. If filled, by next summer, when the humidity is very high, the outside margin of the miter will blow open. If you leave it as-is, it will close on its own by July.

DAP Dnyaflex 230. You want to apply a very small bead and push it into the mitre with a wet finger. The caulk will allow for some movement during the seasons, but too much movement and it will crack again. Just don't use a wood filler or any kind of patching compound if you do decide to fill it.

The brownish oxidized look of your steel is more than likely mill-scale. When steel is formed into sheet, bars, rod, etc... Most of the time, there is heat applied to the raw steel in order to form it into a finished product. This heat created the mill scale. You'll definitely want to remove that, as paint will simply peel off if you don't. Also, steel tends to be very smooth after the scale is removed, so you'll normally want to scar it a bit to get a paintable surface. The only way that I know of to properly prep steel for paint without sandblasting is actually sanding on it by hand. Get a fairly heavy grit sandpaper (150 grit or so) to take off the scale, and a lighter grit (220ish) to roughen up your steel a bit. Should work out ok for ya. Hope this helps.

MDF - Medium Density Fiberboard Medium density fiberboard, or MDF, is a composite wood product similar to particleboard. It's made out of wood waste fibers glued together with resin, heat, and pressure. MDF is appropriate for many applications, from cabinetry to moulding, because it is smooth, uniform, and won't warp. MDF has many advantages over plank wood, particleboard, or high density fiberboard. It's very smooth because the wood fibers used in its manufacture are uniform and fine. This makes it have low "tear out," which means that when sawed, the end has a smooth cut instead of a jagged edge. This also means that a coat of primer and a couple of coats of paint take well, leaving an attractive, finished surface unlike other composite wood products. Thank you for all responses/advice. Very helpful/useful. Excavation is supposed to start this week (that's how early we are in the build, no dirt has been dug yet). Cabinets have not been ordered yet (but need to decide/order soon). I do not like the idea of having the kitchen in the front of the house (where the dining room currently is), irregardless if a wall separates it from the entry foyer. What is most important to me is an open concept between the kitchen and great room. Moving the kitchen to the front of the house is not an option. Additionally, I do like the idea of having a more "formal" dining room, rather than a common eating area shared with the great room. I spent anywhere from 1-3 hours in the kitchen daily between cooking/near the stove, prepping, and washing dishes by the sink. I want to see the great room and converse with whomever is in there. Having said that, I don't like any plans with spending majority of time staring/looking at the staircase, either regular staircase or stairs down to the basement. I've asked before - can't move the porch or add bay windows to the front of the house. :)

Hmmm, one says no and one says yes with caulk. I'm still not clear. FWIW I live around Dallas, so humidity will be an issue.

So, experts should I use caulk? Or not? I'm hoping to work on the doors this weekend.

That is a personal decision every homeowner with cracks has to make. You either leave it and live with it, or you caulk it and expect to have to caulk it again when it opens up again. I caulk everything, except for where movement is part of the design like with floating panels. The majority of mitres that I caulk don't come back, but you never know for sure.

In that case, I'll caulk. I'm not sure if I can stand them split, especially in a kitchen where I'll see them everyday. I guess if it opens up again, I'll deal with them one at a time.
