fyi: bb&b not accepting coupons anymore?

I'm not 100% sure if this is true but, my sister was at Bed Bath and Beyond yesterday and the sales associate told her that after February 28th, they will no longer accept coupons now that their major competitor is out of business.

Has anyone else heard this? If it's true, any of you were holding on to a few you might want to use them before the end of the month.

I haven't heard but it wouldn't surprise me. I figured they would stop sending them or at the least not be as generous with them.

I got one of the regular BB&B coupon cards in the mail earlier this week. Today I got a "welcome to the neighborhood" coupon for 20% off an entire purchase. That one doesn't expire until 5/8/09. :o)

Ha! Yes! That is the mall that I fondly remember. We saved our allowance and babysitting money and lived for the weekends when our moms would drop us off and just let us wander the place for hours. I remember crushing on the cute boys who worked at the pizza place (a giant slice of pizza and a Dr. Pepper was always a must) - oh, and then a box of Karmelkorn and an Orange Julius. That was back in the day when Pier 1 was, as you say, BB, "junky". But what fun it was! Lerner's was a popular store for teen girls, and I unloaded quite a bit of my teenage cash in there! I remember spending hours in Musicland, the record store, then going next door to the t-shirt shop where you could have your choice of iron-on transfers applied while you wait. (I bought an ELO shirt there. ;-)) We were generally well behaved kids, but I do recall one time riding the elevator in Penney's and screaming all the way up. As the doors opened onto the second level, we were met by a very irritated security guard. We were mortified, and so worried that they were going to call our parents. Back then, we still believed that something like that could "go down on your permanent record." Ah. Nostalgia.

BBB accepts expired coupons AND Linens & Things Coupons, and vice versa. BBB is more in tune to it though and their cashiers will stand there and help you figure out how to use the most coupons for the most savings. LnT cashiers always have to ask the manager for help (do we accept these?) although the answer is always Yes. Anyway, that's my experience. I get so many BBB coupons, I couldn't possibly use them all up unless I was completely furnishing my kitchen, bath & bedroom from scratch! And here's an interesting point. I recently got a coupon from Lowe's, something like $10 off a $25 purchase maybe, and when I looked over the receipt, instead of just taking the $10 off the total, it was pro-rated so that each item had a discount associated with it. It all added up to $10 and I scratched my head over why they would do it that way till it occured to me that if I took back any of the items, they'd be able to refund me less than the full price. Guess it saves them from people using the $10 off $25 coupon, getting their $10, then returning $15 of the stuff they bought and walking away with $10 of free stuff.

Yes Annie! Don't bargin shop for cat food. Cats have tender tummies and do best with one flavor of food. One local grocer probably thinks I'm nuts because the only thing I buy in his store is catfood... and I clean off his shelf of my cat's favorite when I'm there. Sometimes when people ask how many cats I have I tell them just one but he is big and very hungry. I buy all my cat litter at Walmart because I can get 100 lbs for $10... yup big kitty (most regulars know I have several small adorable kitties with names like Annie and Jessy). I so seldom use coupons. I've made the cashier shake her head when I turn to the customer behind me and give away the register coupons. I think of myself as a value shopper. If a product has quality and I'll enjoy eating it then I buy. Even being single I'll buy a 10lb roast and cut it into usable portions. I like beans and rice so my grocery budget is not big enough to worry about. Meat and fresh fruit seem to be the big hitters on my bill... and of course beer is almost a budget of it's own. We have a super bargin meat market 20 minutes down the road but I hate using that much time and gas. When I do go I fill the freezer... beef tenderloin is currently $7/lb, lake perch $9/lb, any kind of beef steak between $3-4/lb, ground chuck normally $2/lb. They probably only make pennies a pound but they sell meat by the ton everyday. I've been working with a very nice lady that enjoys coupons so I give her my Sunday paper. Last week she saved $11 with them. She enjoys it so I was careful not to rain on her parade but when I asked what she bought she said "junk food and a couple things I normally buy". I'm a terrible shopper and usually just buy the same things over and over. I noticed I now have three bottles of my favorite vinegar in the pantry. At least I've done a fair job eating down the pantry and freezer so I can see what I have in there. Just picked another quart of tomatoes out of my garden. People were telling me a month ago to pull up the vines but they keep flowering and putting out new tomatoes so I'll hold back until the frost kills them. Hard to beat "free" food. : ) lyra

You remember the reasons given for it being essential to let the market decide which is the best way to go? That competition will ensure that everyone offers the products and services that people desire ... they claim. And it's partly true ... the corporations love competition ... among their suppliers. That way, the big guys can dictate to each supplier what they're willing to pay: take it or leave it. If they're big enough, many suppliers will take it ... until they are near bankrupt. They love competition among their customers: if there are only a few, they have too much negotiating power ... there is more or less a level playing field. But ... they hate it on their own level. Remember how we had a lot of little (granted, inefficient) dairies? The locally dominant dairy'd come in and offer the little guy about half what his business was worth. If he refused, they'd undercut his prices till he could no longer survive. Then the big guys came along and ate the middle-sized ones. When you have half a dozen players doing 80% of the business, do you figure that there's much competition? We have a small number of gasoline suppliers in Canada. When there's a price rise ... four local stores all put up their price to the same amount ... at the same time. After many complaints were heard, the government carried out several evaluations, over the years. They all came up with the conclusion that, yes, there is competition in the petroleum business. And all is well. As communism fell in Russia, many very large businesses and agencies were sold off to certain well-placed individuals or small groups. So they start off with heavy centralization, from the start. The same is going on in China as they gear up for participation in the market eceonomy - many very large companies are being set afloat. A number of them with close association to the Chinese government ... or the army. So theirs is to be a mature, over-centralized, economy from the start. We talk a lot about "freedom" and "democracy" ... which we mean to be operational in the political, and substantially in the social, realm. But a measure of "economic democracy" that some of us feel to be a worthwhile way to fly, doesn't get much consideration. Corporations run by the golden rule: he wot has the gold ... makes the rules. Funny, I was wondering just the other day if they would feel like they no longer needed to compete! I seldom would shop there if I didnÂt have a coupon.

exactly. without the coupon, there is little reason to shop there. All there items can be found at other stores which do have discounts (Macy's etc) or online.

With that reasoning, I never should have gotten coupons, as the closest Linens N Things was 75 miles away. BB&B doesn't have any competition in my city, yet the coupons came every week or so.

I found something on the internet about it. They will no longer accept competitor's coupons, and some stores will no longer accept expired coupons, it may vary from store to store.

I don't think the coupons were a matter of competition. My good friend works for a manufacturer of retail home linens. LNT was one of her accounts. She told me that they were owned by the same company..

I have heard similar things about the coupons but have not tested my local store's policy yet. I do know that Buy Buy Baby stores (owned by the same parent company) will take UNEXPIRED BB&B coupons. I also read that Macy's will accept BB&B coupons in their housewares department (but it might take awhile to find an employee who is aware of this "informal policy"...is that an oxymoron?).

Our BB&B will take their own coupons, expiration date doesn't matter.

I just rec'd. a printable email 20% coupon. My local store has always taken expired coupons (up to 5 per visit) & that was still true last week.

Was just at our BB&B this morning and talked to the young man helping me about their coupon policy. He said all stores are corporate owned and policies should be the same. They just recently stopped honoring Linens 'n Things coupons even though the stores closed in November. When I lived in Spring TX the BB&B there accepted expired coupons but when I was with my DD in Bellingham MA the guy there would not accept my expired coupon. Wish I had known this and I would have challenged him on that. My nearest store is in Rogers AR now and he said Corporate decides when to send out their coupons but they would take expired coupons if I did not have a current one.

The last time I was at BB&B was 2 weeks ago and I remember seeing a sign on the window... as of Feb 28 they would no longer be accepting Linens N' Things coupons. I was surprised they were extending it that long. But no notices about their own coupons so I assume nothing has changed as far as that goes.

So where are my BB&Y coupons? They haven't sent me any in weeks which is highly unusual because I used them as soon as I received them so they know I'm a regular customer. I am starting to get a little worried that their coupons will stop OR become few and far between now that their competitor is gone. Well I've got news for them. I won't shop in their store unless I get my coupon! lol I can hold out longer than they can. ;-)

Funny, IÂve been waiting for one to show up too!

I didnÂt know they accepted expired coupons!

And more than 1 per visit? It says right on them only one per customer per visit! I never asked them to take moreÂnever thought I could! Another "unofficial" policy?
