Painting a wall without Primer will not hurt anything per say. Primer is formulated to bond better then paint to surfaces. Therefore, if you don't use primer, you will often find that it takes more coats of paint to fully cover the wall then when using a base coat of primer. Also, the paint may not last as long since is doesn't bond as well to the surface. The other problem with painting without primer comes from painting over existing surfaces that have been previously painted or may have stains and things on them. If you were to paint over a wall without using primer, that hadn't been touched in say 15 years, you would find that many of the stains and possibly the existing wall color would bleed through the paint. You would end up repainting the wall many times to fully cover it. If you used primer, you could cover it possibly with just one top coat. So if your wall looks good the way it is, I wouldn't worry about it. But it may need to be repainted sooner than if you had primed it first. But keep in mind the next time you paint a wall, that it's well worth the money to use a good quality primer for your base coat. Also, I don't recommend using a thick coat of any paint on a wall. Use enough paint to cover the surface, then wait for it to dry and apply a second coat if necessary. Putting a heavy coat on will eventually lead to pealing and cracking of the paint, prematurely. You probably do not need a primer. I'm not even sure that I would use an oil based coating. A high quality acrylic floor coating would probably be fine. Dutch Boy is certainly not considered high quality, but the issue could have been curing. If you pull tape and do not score the line where you want the tape to break away, you can pull the paint off. The paint will stick better and bond better and become more durable as it cures (up to a month). Paints in bathrooms can take longer to cure because you are showering in there and putting moisture in the air which can sometimes re-wet the paint film. Use the fan, take shorter showers, shower with the door open, etc..whatever you can do to help that paint cure. There are no-skid, non-slip additives you can add to the paint if you are worried the surface will be too slick.

I am doing this even as we "speak!" I am only waiting for drying time between coats. I am also painting bare-wood cabinets and will be painting them all to match. First, I totally agree with ajc71 with the harsher sandpaper. I experimented today and got that crazy polish from the 220. Second, I have also been experimenting with brush-on primer vs. spray-on, and let me tell you, the difference is night and day! I brushed Glidden Gripper onto my base cabinets and doors, and it raised the grain on my unfinished cabs. Not too big a deal, but I did have to go back and re-sand then touch up with primer. Then I spray-primed the unfinished upper cabinet doors with original Kilz (removed them and took them to the garage) and the difference was night and DAY! Not only was it faster the finish was awesome, and coverage was excellent. You can bet your sweet bippie I will be doing the rest of the doors with a spray primer, even if I have to get something better-suited to pre-finished doors. Stiles will still get the brush-on, mostly because I do not want to have to deal with spray in the house. The sanding will be bad enough. Good luck!
