pantry challenge: green chilli paste (and others)

Is this how you do this? When you buy things and later have no idea why?

I bought this for a reason darnit - and now I have no clue. I have a 9 oz jar of "green chilli paste".

Anyone have ideas?

And while you're thinking on it, I bought some Chinese 5 spice powder...had to be because of someone here! But for what?

And where did I get this 8 oz container labeled Sambal Oelek? wow, there's lots of seeds in it! What the heck do I do with that?

Sambal oelek is one of my favorite ingredients. It's chilis, sometimes with garlic, and I use it when ever I want a sharp hot burst of flavor. I mix it with soy sauce as a dipping sauce for potstickers or bao, and put a tiny bit in marinades, etc,
The 5 spice powder--sniff it to make sure it's still got something. It's used in various Chinese dishes.

Green chili paste--Thai curry?

I like to marinate shrimp in sambal oelek along with lots of garlic and fresh ginger......yummy. You can use the green chili paste in marinades also.

I know I only have regular thrips (frankinwhatever) but I had them BAAAAD and maybe some of you will find this worth a try. I tried spraying with something nasty once 4 years ago- (it worked, temporarily) but decided quickly it wasn't worth the health of myself and the planet to spray my garden routinely for thrips and so last year I switched to organic soaps only and added nematodes to the soil. It helped to a degree. But I started this year with a pretty bad infestation (leaves more yellow from stippling, than green- all flowers scarred or just unable to open) and after watching my purchased lady bugs fly off, again, I decided I needed to quit killing aphids with the soap so the ladybugs would stay and lay some eggs, so then the lady bug nymps (alligators! who can't fly!) would be there eventually and eat the thrips. ... and doing nothing worked great. I also had a bunch of minute pirate bugs and lacewings adopt my garden (yay! first time ever) and the thrips now have predators to eat them and seem to be gone. No more nose full of bugs when I sniff. I look to make sure there isn't pirate in there ready to bite me now tho! But No more ruined blooms. I did a google search on "aphids and thrips" and found that some people agree- you need aphids to get rid of thrips. The aphids do so little damage, and they've been eaten up anyway now too. So- I know I didn't have chili thrips, but I found that even the soap left me worse off than before for the regular thrips since it was removing all predators of thrips. I don't have any other problem bugs in the garden I can't squish (no JB, no sawflies etc.) so I understand my solution isn't for everyone- just tossing this out for those who may only have a severe flower thrip problem.

My Butia palm from Chilly Palm Tree had developed scale a few months later too. The eggs must have been there dormant. We removed it by hand twice because it re-occured. But after that it was OK. I was very concerned that if the scale would have spread in my greenhouse to other plants/palms I would have to do major spraying, which would be unhealthy since I grow lots edibles. Since cold weather palm businesses are hard to come by, I would warn people too, but I would not want to hurt his business too much. I called him about the scale when it formed on my Jelly palm and he did recommend some soaps to help get rid o the scale. If the palm was any larger, removing scale could have been a real ordeal.

Roots can stand a lot of jostling. Get a trowel in the pot and loosen the root ball around the edges. If it's not too root bound, you should be able to tease it out. Not critical yet. Hack that towering stem off when you can. It's not critical to do it right now, but it will make re-potting a lot easier. I would treat the spider mites first. You can pull off the webs with a paper towel then apply insecticidal soap. Read the directions and soak the little buggers. Your watering scheme is working - the plant has gotten this far - so keep at it for now. Try to get it more light. Closer to window and lower so all the leaves get some light. Peppers are tough. Thanks Grub I'm glad you liked them, The inferno is my favourite, sweet and fruity but it gets you sweating with that creeping habanero burn. My habanero plants are just going crazy at the moment absolutely covered in flowers. I am looking into a tomato based sauce but I think I will probably do a salsa, maybe smoked habanero, tomato and mango salsa or something like that might use pineapple instead of mango, it works so well with habs, I saw a recipe that used guava and habanero the other day that would be interesting. Well keep enjoying the sauce, hope the tomatos and chillis grow well and good luck with the sauce making. jaunne flammee are growing well, I kept them in pots this season I think I will make some space in the ground next year. Try the smokey jalapeno with mussells its really good. Mick

Yes, LOL, I do that all the time. I often see an ingredient somewhere that I've come across in a cook book or something and buy it but can't remember which recipe it goes with. I only do that with things that will last a while until I can find the lost recipe. In fact, I just did that yesterday with unsweetened coconut. I can never find that. I think those recipes are in my Indian or Jewish cook book (or both).

Can you list the ingredients on the green chile paste? Thai recipes often call for green curry paste or red curry paste... I'm wondering if what you have is the same thing. The Thai stuff often has lemon grass, ginger or galangal, peppers, blah blah.

The 5 Spice Powder is used in lots of dishes. I hope that maybe someone remembers posting a recipe with it, since that recipe is probably why you bought it. My Thai cook book has a recipe for Five Spice Pork Spare Ribs that looks pretty darn good. I haven't tried it... but if you want the recipe I'll type it out for you. I may be trying it soon, though, LOL. These start on the barbecue and finish in the oven. I'm glad you posted this and made me look!

Here you go Robin,

FIVE SPICE PORK SPARE RIBS / See-Krong Moo Ob
From Thailand, The Beautiful Cookbook (Bangkok and the Central Plains Region)

Marinade

1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup fish sauce
1 teaspoon five spice powder
1 tablespoon Oriental sesame oil
1/2 cup sugar
6 garlic cloves, minced
1/4 cup cilantro, minced
2 tablespoons rice wine or cognac

4 lbs pork spare ribs, cut into 1 inch pieces
1 tablespoon oil

Rub marinade mixture into the ribs thoroughly and set aside for 10 minutes.

Brush barbecue grill with the oil and grill ribs for about 10 minutes. Remove and bake in a 350 oven for 30 minutes.

Serves 4

*Those are the ingredients as is, but I'll be adding a little sugar at a time to taste and leaving out the fish sauce. Unless anyone can recommend a brand that isn't strong.

Al fish sauces are strong on their own, but they are an important part of the Thai taste profile. The lighter colored ones may be less strong. Thanks so much. that looks wonderful.
