Friday Scavenger Hunt- paper weaving

This Friday's scavenger hunt was inspired by a class my stamp store is advertising. It is a type of paper weaving called "papuela". They sell templates you can use for this weaving, but I think it would not be too hard to make your own. So any paper weaving links are good- examples, projects or patterns.

on your mark, get set, go!

Talley Sue are you still doing the Toss Ten? I didn't see any recent postings from you. I think this is an excellent idea and I am going to join in, at least until all my excess "baggage" is gone. That will be years from now! I finished cleaning out our garage and it is the first time since we owned a house that we are able to actually park a car in there. I'm talking about 40 years of marriage here. It feels so good to have at least one car that will not have snow on it this winter. I'm not going to count stuff that goes out to the garbage...that would be too easy. I am going to count only the stuff that I put in a box that will be going to our Big Brothers/Sisters Consignment shop. The boxes as they fill will go into the trunk of my car and will be dropped off as the trunk fills or if I am down that way. Having cleaned out the garage, I feel so good and am now starting on the house. I actually came to this forum for hints on how to organize the stuff I am keeping. We have moved from a very large house down to one that is only 1000 square feet but with deaths in our family we accumulated others belongings as well. As we age, I can see us having to move to something even smaller in the future and I want to make it easier for me while I still have the health to do it. I'm off now to get started but have to do some outside work first before the snow comes. Then it's down to my basement to find 10 things.

Hi Everybody! Finally made it back from the Graveyard Hunt and visiting the granddaughters. The Hunt went well, got two that I hadn't planned on and missed out on 3 because of the weather - HIGH humidity and close to 100 degrees. Very annoying. I visited 9 graveyards, not for the ghostly/haunted angle, but more for the carvings and different types of gravestones and the history. And I like the old, small family graveyards, but did get some of the bigger ones with old stones. I purposely avoided any that were supposed to be haunted, not that I believe in ghosts but why take chances? It is amazing how many different types of gravestones there are. I did end up at one that I didn't want to go to; a young girl was murdered there in 1991 and as far as I can tell, her murderer was never apprehended. I crossed that one off the list rather quickly. Then, I got lost in Madison County and came up on this beautiful, small, wooded cemetery. Great, I thought. Wandered around, took lots of pics and thoroughly enjoyed it. Got to my daughters and revisited the website and found out that this was the ONE cemetery I had wanted to avoid. DUH! Kind of scary to think about. The granddaughters are doing well, and enjoying their summer, altho I think Tabitha is just about ready for school to begin. We went to the splash pad, rode bikes and did some tye dyeing. That was an experience, with a 7 and 4 year old! I need to get over to the July swap site and see how everyone is doing with that. And I'll do that as soon as I get laundry done and get suitcases and the back pack stored away! Hope all are doing well! Shirley!

What did you (or your DH, or someone you love) do for 60th bday?

My cousin really went overboard LOL. Friday night he hosted a private dinner party at a restaurant for close friends and family; then on Saturday afternoon he had a large event in a local park, with several tents, music, food, drink, and invited a few of his favorite causes (Sierra Club for one) to set up booths. Me? I celebrated by training for and completing a half-marathon (not on my birthday, but that month) then had all the cake and ice cream I wanted!

Jeanne sends to Mandy - received Mandy sends to Annie - received Annie sends to Nicole - received Nicole sends to Shirley - received Shirley sends to Margo - received Margo sends to Jeanne - received Beth sends to Ruth - sent Ruth sends to Beth - received Ladies, I'm going to post some garden books (non-fiction) that I've enjoyed quite a lot. I have copies of all of these on my bookshelves. Of course, the "southern" ones might not be useful if you don't live in the south. This first author has passed away but was in the S.C. Master Gardeners and the kindest and most knowledgeable person who did a lot for the group. Margot Rochester - her 2 books are: Earthly Delights Down to Earth Both are the type of books you can read again and again. The following I consult again and again. The Southern Living Garden Book Burpee Seed Starter Tough Plants for Southern Gardens - Felder Rushing Southern Herb Growing - Marlene Hill, Gwen Barclay with Jean Hardy The Southern Gardens Book of Lists - Lois Trigg Chaplin China Bayles Book of Days - Susan Wittig Albert My dog has been waiting patiently for her dinner so I'll take care of that and then add to this with our winners for November. Thanks for joining in!

Here are directions for weaving a fish out of tickertape (or ribbon).

And here are instructions for making a bird with similar techniques.

enjoy.

By the way, take a look at the rest of the tapefish's site, below. Thok is a far-out nut, whom I had the pleasure of meeting in person last summer in Denmark and the spring before that in CA.

Oh yeah, and of course there's this site, which is more like origami than weaving, but incorporates weaving-like aspects...

Oh yeah and another P.S. :-)

How about just weaving quilling strips of different colors and widths to get a Madras effect?

Whoops, looks like the cool people at Fascinating Folds got there ahead of me. Figures. hehe. (see below)

That's funny, I was just at that icandream site y'day and I didn't see the one for the bird. I was going to post the fish one and the woven paper ball.

The site below has the bird I was going to post. The entire site is pretty cool!

I found the bird diagram with google. Search engines can find pages that do not have links pointing to them.

This is the first time I've seen diagrams for the bird. I saw one once about 10 years ago and learned by reverse-engineering, but it's tough to show/explain to people what I'm doing, so I'm glad someone took the time to post instructions! :-o

Artsy-C -- Thanks for the Danish sites. Really cool. I would not have described the woven heart exactly that way, but I can't offer an improvement right now. Need to think about it when I have time. -- Marie
