Karen, if you are out there lurking, please consider re-entering the forum. I miss you terribly & I'm sure I'm not alone. Your advice & help is much appreciated! I know that you left during Lent, but I'm back to eating fish on Fridays & looking forward to hearing from you! :)

Me, too!!
Wondering what creative things you've been up to Karen (and everybody else, too)!
Are you busy with email groups, swaps, zines, what? Did you make it to Artiology?

BTW, I sent you an email, Karen, and wonder if it got there...?

Hi Gram & Lia & everyone else...I'm here!
My creative muse has been in a huge slump lately. Been very busy doing some local volunteer stuff (prepping donations for Iraq). Did a series of major landscaping projects and built a retaining wall behind tour house. Then spent a weekend in NYC for our anniversary. Now getting ready for Artiology this weekend, trying to finish 100 swaps & pack my supplies & clothes.
Next week off to Canada for a houseboat trip on Lake Ontario & Rideaux Canal.
Lia, I got your email and sent you a reply...about the AA concert...how was it?

(((big hugs)))

Its perfect day out there- what are you planting out?

Since I have plenty of stuff growing in my garden it is pretty easy to see what is actively growing right now. I have bunch of primulas blooming- I am figuring it is safe enough to plant out my seedlings, I have lots of columbines doing real well- columbine seedlings out they go, my hardy geraniums go gangbusters- geraniums go out too. Karen as far I as your seedlings cleomes can go anytime they are pretty hardy and I DS them, as well as larkspur. V1- I always have leaves so never used anything else but some straw could do as well- anything fluffy and light will do. At this time my zip code does not show any cold spells, only occasional drop during the night to 32. What that means that for an hour or two during very early morning air temps will drop to 32F. Soil being heated during the day will keep higher temps with no problems. Hardy perennials specially spring blooming ones have built in protection for such temps and have no problems growing outside. I have been doing it for while and have to do plantings this way- my gardens are too established so I have to give seedlings best fighting chance to survive. Would suggest waiting another week but do not hold too long for tough perennial seedlings- they grow much better when planted out.

Lhylcn- sealing should ideally be done both by the fabricator in his shop, and again in your kitchen once installed. Most sealer manufacturers I've spoken to say there's no exact number or times it should be done, but it usually takes several applications until every part of the marble is sufficiently sealed. This is tested by letting water sit on the surface of the marble and making sure it beads up well rather than soaking right in. Honing is just a process that makes the marble "dull" rather than shiny. It's a personal preference. My Vermont Danby marble is very honed, very little sheen. Red- two things that have etched my marble instantly are tomatoes and lemon juice. I'd think ketchup would etch, too, being tomato-based. Etching, though, seems not to bother most marble owners, myself included. You can only see it in certain lights, and it's a part of the patina of the living stone. As far as staining, my counters are sealed with Porous Plus 511, and could easily handle ketchup sitting on them for awhile with no stains. I've had coffee droplets that splashed from the Keurig sit overnight and just wipe up the next morning. I have no stains at all. The counter have only been in for about 2 months or a little less, but I've cooked a lot in these months, have had house guests and hosted Easter at the house, no stains! That said, the Vermont Danby marbles are known for being less porous--and therefore a bit more stain-resistant--than many other marbles.

What big purchases have you made that you found out you didn't need?

Rho, I have seen those really expensive machines, and I know that ,beyond a doubt, there are not enough garments or anything else that I could produce in one lifetime to warrant the price of those machines. Just to buy the thread for the embroidery function can be prohibitive. And, I really don't believe that there is any more pleasure to be gotten from them, either. Also, many times, the machines that offer fewer functions are really the best. I wish that I had, maybe, just bought a new sewing machine instead of a serger. Now I sew with my old mechanical Bernina with a backup of an old Singer 401 from the 50s the was my moms and that I learned to sew on. All I want is old school. So much of modern life suffers from what I call "style over substance, and, the style sucks". So, where does that leave the substance? The form is not pleasing and the function is even worse. Much of it is a lose/lose affair, in my opinion. It has become difficult to find just a well made somethingortheother. So many things come loaded with functions that you never knew you needed or wanted and still don't need or want. It is all about upsellling things that are really of little value.

Happy anniversary, Karen!
I didn't get your email, but the AA concert was smashing. Got to meet the band with DS.

Be sure to give us a report on the Artiology weekend. Should revive the muse, huh?

The muse was revived, but my body is dead tired!!!!!
This year I took classes that did not really result in finished projects, so I have 4 half-finished ones and one book that is about 80% finished. Took 2 book-making classes, 2 beading (bead embroidery & peyote), and a silver wire-working class. All the teachers were great, especially Keely Barham.
I got so many cool swaps this year! One girl made dice bracelets & earrings with cool playing card dice. Also got some cool stamped dominos, a playing card doll, mini books, paper beads, puzzle piece jewelry, and tag art. My favorite clever idea was a stamped bamboo swap that was the size of a domino. It was a "tile" from a bamboo tile placemat that you can get at a Pier One-type home store. Anthropologie? Artifact? I can't remember. But anyway it is already pre-drilled with 2 holes when you take the placemat apart....a beautiful shape perfect for stamping on!
The organizers were so generous with our registration goodie bags. We got a wooden game, a tote bag with a pocket made with custom artiology patterned fabric, a playing card box necklace with fancy cards representing each class we took, and a bag of assorted game pieces and ephemera as well as some nice supply catalogs & raffle tickets for awesome prize baskets.
I will be scanning & posting projects as soon as they are finished, which won't be this week since we are leaving for Canada.

(Glad you had such a great time at AA & got to meet them. Now every time I hear "Pierced" I think of you!)

For anyone that thinks way in advance: The Great American Stamp convention is in Hauppague, Long Island this year on 1 Nov 03. I'd love the chance to meet some of you. I'll send more info next week, as I get it. It was a great show last year & promises to be even better this year. (and only 45 min. away from NYC for anyone interested) Karen, so glad to hear from you & that all is well. Sounds like you're back to your "artsy" helpful self!
