nola using the nylons..does it make the quilt lighter?

Where did you get the idea for using nylons for the stuffing?

The idea for the nylons came when I discovered that was what was in an old puff square quilt while repairing one...the reason I still wanted to use old nylons instead of the batting or polyfil of today is this: it is more washer/dryer-friendly as it doesn't ball up or shred and nylons are really nice and warm, too.

AND last but not least: I believe in recycling, reusing, upcycling, environmental friendly projects.

On..I love that!!! Are those hard to make? I'm wondering because I still have all DH's clothes and I'd like to make (or have one made)a lap quilt for my 2 children. Just something to remember him with.

Hey there COUNTRY! Long time, eh?

EASY to make...cut out 5 in. squares and sew (I hand sew with running stitch while watching tv) 3 sides. Turn right side out and stuff with a nylon (one square will hold a nylon from knee to toe - I kinda fold it and fit it into the 'bag' or square. Then I tack it with embroider floss in the center to hold it there. Then I whipstitch the open end and have one square done.

Then layout all your squares and pin together in a row...sew one to the other and then sew the rows together.
I haven't sewn the squares together yet and will probably do that on machine as well as the rows.

It is reversible this way, too. No need to back or border it.

Washable/Dryable.

Salvaging fabrics from things you know or like would be really special!

I did order most of mine on ebay 'precision cut' quilt squares. I like 5 in. -- they take less stuffing than larger squares and easier to sew and handle than the smaller ones.

I didn't want any duplicate patterns in mine, but I do have a few matches.

Charm quilts can have matches for all the patterns EXCEPT for one square that is the only one of its kind OR all different squares with only one that has a match. Also, they have I SPY squares that have interesting things in them - great for kids quilts.

Forgot to tell ya all....old nylons don't collect up as fast as the good old days when we got dressed up more and got runs with every snag!

I bought used nylons on ebay and paid quite abit for just a few and then got smart and came here begging...I now have a kind KT soul that is saving hers for me (not revealing my source for obvious reasons...LOL! First come, first served, ya know?)

But...I have since found a hosiery company that sells waste hosiery and they cost $20 for a 15 lb. box! (The rep said they don't charge for the nylon 'tubes' (that's the nylons with the panty part cut off) and the charge is for shipping and handling only. BELIEVE ME...THAT IS A DEAL! I paid that price for a whole lot less (and they are hard to find!)

PS I can sew 6 sq. an hour while watchin Young and Restless. My quilt will be 15 sq. across and 16 sq. down in size.

I haven't ordered from the hosiery company yet, but she says there are two kinds...the lighter wt. silky ones and the heavy texured ones and you can buy one or the other or a mix.

I am gonna get a mix to see which is easier to work with and which makes a better stuffing. One leg cut almost in half will fill 2 squares. I measure it from fingertip to elbow and cut there. Fold almost the size of the bag and guide it to the seam with your fingers works well. Stuffing them really goes fast.

The old ones I have already used I like the thicker ones...easier to handle and fill the bag nicer. But, the silky ones would make a lighter wt. quilt.
