Comments (89)We started out planning on using Formica for a couple of reasons: mainly due to a limited budget but also because I have lived with Formica all my life and never really had any problems with it. But we ended up installing granite becuase there are some really great deals right now (at least in my area) on granite. It still was more than Formica, but for the first time in years it was within our budget range. We went with a Venetian Gold which is just a little bit darker (more browns and blacks, no burgandy spots) than the New Venetian Gold. It was just installed last week and I so, so, so love it. It may not be the current trend, but I love it! Besides price, I don't think I could stand soapstone in my kitchen. After being a science major and then working for 7+ years in a lab job, soapstone just reminds me too much of the lab!...See MoreMy 11yo says Raven ceasarstone looks fake
Comments (51)My crazy deadline of trying to finish this remodel by the end of July was really stressing me out. Yesterday morning, I decided that I would choose some color of Ceasarstone. I simply had not seen a granite that went along with my vision or that I just loved. I learned that some marbles probably were in my price range, but for a couple of other reasons, didn't seem to be the right choice. I was on a mission to choose a Ceasarstone and had my mind made up. Since my DH was home for the day, I engaged him and said that WE were going to choose TODAY. I took some backsplash samples and we found one that we both liked, brought it home and the boys liked it too. I am happy because I think it will be an easy surface to maintain, it is light and that works for my smaller kitchen. (and I don't have undercab. lighting) My sister said it reminded her of our grandmother's old formica tabletop. (Which was red and we have happy memories of it), but I am going to own this decision (and try not to re-think it), but mostly, embrace any of its "fakeness!" We chose Ceasarstone Nougat. I came back today and see that it is the same as gracesantacruz! We also have a beachy feel to our home and my seaglass collection was my original backsplash inspiration. I just want to say thanks again for sharing your pictures and for the comments and encouragement (erikanh) As another comment on this thread, the fabricator said that 3 years ago they did a very small portion of quartz countertops, but these days it is about 50% of their work. Also, I ran across this article about a kitchen of the year to be displayed in New York this summer with Raven Ceasarstone countertop. http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/Caesarstone-1011570.html I think the Raven has an elegant look....See MoreHey! Comments (35)Newcastle--Yes, I pay the GC's overhead on everything, including cabs. I'm not sure he'll go for me getting my own. Despite tough economic times and a great first few meetings with him this year, he seems to be getting p!ssy about me sourcing my own materials. Why should I pay all the markup when I'm doing all the work to research and find the materials and can order them cheaper than he can get them? Because then he isn't making his $ and won't do my job. I'm not in a great position to be my own GC at this point with the baby, preschooler, busy DH, no experience, etc. Thanks for more info about your guy. Pug--I still think the right gray would look very chic with your cabs. Let us know what you find!...See MoreDH the Tasmanian Devil...Glad I Chose Quartz!
Comments (27)Thanks for the kind words, everyone! The even better news is that I love my quartz a little bit more each day. I think it gets better because my visions of what marble or white quartzite "could have looked like in my kitchen" are fading away, and what I'm left with is the super sleek and sexy quartz that is my reality, which just happens to be a great fit for our sloppy cooking style. deeageaux, it's so hard to compare apples to apples because each fabricator offers different products at different prices, and nearly all of them will lower their bids when you tell them that another fabricator's bid is lower than theirs. Also, it sounds funny to say "cheaper," because believe me, even Chroma Quartz still ain't cheap! :) For comparison's sake, the (experienced, highly-rated, family-owned) fabricator I went with gave me a bid for 52 square feet of Chroma Stormy Sky Polished that was $1800 less than their Caesarstone Misty Carrera bid. Hope that helps....See Moreremodelfla
