They are fairly popular here in my area and seem to grow at a pretty good rate. I have quite a few. Our city lined the main street through downtown with them probably around 10 years ago. Those trees are probably 30' to 40' tall now and starting to provide a little shade. The potential for fruiting of seed-grown trees is one reason people don't often choose them. And, even though ginkgos grow reasonably well here, they still don't keep pace with the trash trees (think Bradford pears, etc) that the horticultural zombie class still seems to choose.

Interesting thread.....Here in Utah, where we have snow on the ground for months on end, I don't recall ever seeing a white kitchen...ever. Not at upscale open houses, not in the annual Parade of Homes (where prices range from $500K to $2 Million), not ever. And I think that snow-on-the-ground has a lot to do with this! (When I lived in San Antonio in 1997-99, white kitchens were very popular, and I had one installed in the house I built. And that makes sense given San Antonio's heat and humidity -- it just felt welcoming to walk into the white kitchen from the outside.) So, in Utah wood kitchens with granite and SS appliances are the rage, and have been for several years. Popular woods are alder and cherry -- both stained, and left natural, with some subtle glazing. You'll find oak cabinets, too, but not usually in the more expensive homes. You won't find painted cabinets...people here want the warmth of wood, and the ability to see its grain. Lots of back splashes made of interesting tile (glass tiles really haven't caught on yet) or granite. And granite counter tops are found everywhere. Kitchen floors range from wood floors to porcelain tile to travertine. Styles range from traditional to country to western modern...No cutting-edge Architectural Digest modern or NYC modern.

Jeri, that's a very likely ID, given that Fred Boutin is supposed to have thought "BSB" was a double 'GdR'. Gloire de Margottin was definitely a good rose for California, so I would expect a few plants to be lingering about. I think one reference described 'GdMargottin' as an improved 'GdRosomanes'.* Virginia *From Foster-Meillar's 1902, Book of the Rose: "Gloire de Margottin (Margottin, 1887). — This is a good deal like an improved form of Gloire de Rosomenes (Vibert), which is, I believe, the progenitor of General Jacqueminot. The growth is long and rambling and it does well for a pillar, or especially for being pegged down as a bedding Rose. It is exceedingly bright in colour, but thin in petal, and not very full: nevertheless the shape is good and pointed while it remains, and it is one of the brightest of all the true red Roses. It requires but little pruning."

In fairness, the OP did not ask what color she should paint. She asked more if we've hit the end of the Everything Must Be Grey fad. I'm not sure we've hit the end of it, no. (*sigh*) Judging from what's happening in most of the shelter sites and magazines, I'd guess things are going to warm up at least a little. Greige, beige, peach, white all seem to be on the rise. OTOH, I don't think any ONE color is going to be as ubiquitous as grey. I suspect we're going to go through one of those intercalary periods between major color trends. And while that happens, the greyness will go on in the mainstream, just because there isn't anything with enough mass appeal to replace it. I don't know if we're quite tired enough of cool to go back warm, since there is still an awful lot of Tuscan gold left. But there seems to be more pink/peach/red/deep green than soft blues and aquas or other cooler tones. I'm not sure that grey is quite as neutral as everybody says. It has its own tendency to tip one color or another and there's really not a lot you can do to fight that. And tones of grey don't always play well together if they aren't chosen carefully. Now, it's more flexible than pinky-beige, so it has that going for it.
