large handmade paper

i've been making small, thick 5x7 sheets and have had problems with larger sizes... (using a dip method)... i'm sure better supplies would help, but i'm limited to what i've got for now...

I'm about to try to make a fairly large sheet (8 or 10 inches by 20 or so) by pouring pulp and leaving it on the mold to dry....

any thoughts on this? anyone successful making large sheets?

Did you google making paper? Or check some of the craft magazines and contacting the editor? Just a thought I have bought the thinner pages but never even tried to make some. Good luck

yes, yellowhair- it's a very simple method, and depending on how 'into' it you want to get, it can have some intriguing effects. the harder you compress it, the better a writing surface it will make, so having a block cut to fit inside the screen will give you a more compressed pulp paper- there's also a japanese technique where you use a bit more fibrous stuff in it, and make a fairly thin slurry out of the pulp, pour it into the screen, swirl it across the surface, and then pour the extra off- they make the finest mulberry papers that way. I tend to work with wetter pulp- I think you get a more refined finish to things, even if it takes longer, and I like to mix as many KINDS of paper in as I can, since too high a 'pulp' or 'junk' content leaves you with a lumpy gray sludge that needs dying to even be acceptable... but it's all fun to play with, until you get practiced at it. btw- old silk-screening screens give the finest finish, but are hard to find used, and expsenive to buy new

Paper lanterns or one large George Nelson bubble?

I think a cluster of Chinese lanterns or globes is a great idea. This post from Tuesday shows several variations - I love the lanterns and for $50! Awesome look. Use cord covers and some sort of cover over each area (or a nice hook) from each lantern. I think it would be fairly simple to do. Please post when completed so we can see! Madwoman, you are a gramma after my own heart!!To be honest, I think the basic paper making kit you can buy at Michael's is the way to go. And I've always said paper making is the very best way to recycle your junk mail. Just last month, I taught a "gourd guts" paper making class at a gourd show. Yes, you can use almost any organic material, but I would put a few drops of an antibacterial soap in the tub if that material is still green (as opposed to "dried" flowers, etc.) And if you don't have liquid starch to keep inks or paints from bleeding, the same amount of white glue will do. I've been making paper for a long, long time. The easiest thing to do, if you're pouring, is to float the mold in a basin of water (preferably NOT a sink. Use a wash tub or a you can get big vats at home/hardware stores...Lowes, Home Depot) When the mold is floating there is a little bit of water on top of the screen which will help the pulp disperse more evenly. You want to be pouring a very thin, watered down pulp. The other option is to get some "formation aid," which you can buy from www.Twinrocker.com. Or get some okra at the grocery store and soak it overnight and use the sticky, gooey liquid in the pulp. What both formation aid and okra juice do is to make the pulp water viscous thus slowing its flow through the screen giving you more time to even out the sheet.

Just want to add that I do not think leaving paper on a mold to dry is a good idea (though I never have tried it!). On the up-side, if it does not work (i.e., if it does not peel off), you could always re-immerse the mold in the vat & wash the pulp off.
