Umbrellas are wonderful! We went crystal digging at the Coleman-Miller mine near Hot Springs last weekend. Patio/beach umbrellas were out of my price range, but we took three large-sized regular umbrellas and then placed each in a length of pvc pipe that my hubby sharpened on one end; he also drilled holes through the pvc at varied heights so we could use a piece of dowel rod to make them stand taller or shorted in the pipe as we needed. We found that modification to be the most useful in actually securing the umbrellas in the pipe when the wind came up! It made it bearable to be out in 100+ heat all day. Anna

They are not fruit flies but more likely fungus gnats (similar in size and populations). And are the result of conditions outlined above - excessively wet or water retentive potting soil. The lay their eggs on the soil and the larvae feed on organic matter in the soil mix, including plant roots, so you have an endless line of continuing generations unless you do something to check their development. Lots of ways listed online on how to do that but the simplest method is to replace with a better quality potting soil and cut back on the watering frequency.
