It was nice that Joannie Rochette took the bronze medal, too. I think Mirai Nagasu did great, and hope she gets a medal in the next Olympics.

Dara, here is a link to Kim's blog, where he explains: Wrapping cuttings. Here is a video: Rose propagation. Good luck! The first time I tried the burrito method, I forgot all about the wraps. It helps to set up a reminder of some sort. Iceberg boring? Never! But to each their own. My Iceberg hedge is heavily shaded by Sycamore trees and I really don't think I could plant anything else there that would do as well. However, they do black spot in a humid climate, which is why one might not see too many of them in Texas.

The horribly detailed rose report

Hi Mary, I've learned a lot from this forum as well! Another factor in my preferences is I'm getting older and don't want to bend down low to "smell the roses." Tall, fragrant & low maintenance is what I want for my garden these days. Fragrant miniatures I hope to keep potted & up higher to enjoy. Yes, there is crown hardy, then there is cane hardy. Most of the Morden roses are only crown hardy for me - their canes die but they grow back fast & strong. But not all zones are the same (ex. my neighbour's Morden Sunrise rarely dies back & is 4 feet tall, mine dies back to the snowline. I swear they're at least half a zone warmer than me!), maybe that's why cane hardiness is rarely described on tags. A quick run down of some of the rose groups as I informally think of them, based on what is available to me. I'm sure there are more official ways (and multiple names) to describe them. They overlap in the sense that some Explorers are "rugosas", some Explorers are "modern": Types: Species (wild roses such as woodsii, arkansana, virginiana, etc. My understanding is all roses are bred from species roses, which affect the hardiness depending on the species used.) Rugosas (rugose leaves) Rugosa hybrids (cross between a rugosa and a modern rose) Scotch (aka Spinossisima or Burnet) Gallicas (dark rich colours, once blooming) Albas (modtly soft pinks, fragrant, once blooming) Hybrid teas (not hardy for me, but often fragrant with large blooms. Ex. 'Peace' or 'Double Delight') Modern (I use this term to describe the mixed bag of roses developed in the last few decades. These are usually somewhat shrubby, lower maintenance & meant for the garden.) And then there are "brands". These are usually developed from a rose breeder or company with specific goals in mind. Some brands available to me: Canadian Explorer (ex. Martin Frobisher, Jens Munk, John Cabot, Frontenac & more. Most are tough/hardy, but many are larger) Canadian Parkland (ex. Morden Blush, Moden Sunrise, Winnipeg Parks, Hope for Humanity & more. Smaller compared to the Explorers, flashier flowers, but poorer health for some.) Canadian Artist (ex. Oscar Peterson, Campfire & more.) 49th Parallel (ex. Chinook Sunrise, Canadian Shield & more. The latest series of Canadian roses.) Pavement Series (ex. Snow Pavement, Purple Pavement & more. Mostly rugosas.) David Austin (ex. Heritage, Golden Celebration & more. Famous as Engligh shrub roses) Buck Roses Collection (ex. Distand Drums, Prairie Princess & more. Known for good health. ) Oso Easy from Proven Winners (these make a great landscaping rose for constant colour but I don't grow them as they are low growing and usually not fragrant to my nose). Note, the name Prairie at the beginning has been used by a few different companies/breeders. Although some may share some of the same parents, not all do. For example, Prairie Peace and Prairie Celebration are very different. My latest interest are roses like Therese Bugnet, which was bred in Alberta. Here's a garden shot from 2017, things are a little late to bloom this year:

Hi All again, Neil didn't win, but like I said before he is still a winner. He is going to get a lot of wonderful job offers after the tour is over. They finally showed Cindy! and her husband too. I liked how he thanked everyone in Western New York for voting. Though he had some great voters in other areas : ) I'm leaving tomorrow morning for Cincinnati/Covington Kentucky. I'll be gone through Wed. It should be a nice trip. The CHOPTAG tomato party will be a lot of fun. I'll finally meet many of my tomato trading friends. Theresa, I'm sure it will get easier once you get a routine down. Try not to stress too much. Trish, Sorry to hear about the job! I'm glad you got some things lined up already. Remember to show that sweet happy self and I know you'll get a position. I'm also sorry to hear about the health problems. At least it is treatable. My youngest brother has MS and had to take steroid medications. He doesn't like it either, but it definitely helps. April, Happy first birthday to your baby! Klick, Don't work too hard. : ) I like to see you post. Ananda, That is great! Life will be so much easier or at least cleaner, lol, now. Kim and everyone in the heat, I sure hope it cools down soon!!!! Carol, I knew you would do good at your job. : ) Nancy, It is amazing how men get over anything with an engine, lol! But it is great to them to get that garden work done. If I missed anyone, you know I didn't mean it! Talk to you all when I get back, Remy

All about Wythe Blue / the properties of color
Q
Comments (12)
For instance, should I have gone with a more saturated color, like Wythe in my bedroom due to its poor lighting? First, I'd wonder if you could do something to improve the lighting situation. I know it's not always feasible to do that tho. Sometimes time and budget only allow for paint. More saturated, less muted colors are often a good pairing with light that is dim, not robust. If it feels to you that the quality of light is a bit one-dimensional, or flat, or seemingly has a quality to it that just isn't very *full*, then it can be a good idea to add a wall color to the atmosphere that is the opposite of all those things -- like you stated, 'more saturated'. More saturated can help bust thru the dimness or grayed quality of light and deliver more color to the eye. But you don't want vivid either. :-) You want to try to strike the right balance between the light and the colorfulness or chroma in the paint color. One popular tip (that I like to dismiss) is to choose a paint chip that you like and then 'go one up'. Supposedly, that tip is meant to help you avoid choosing wall colors that are too dark, too colorful, just too much in general. The 'going one up' tip is meant to address the fact that wall colors grow more intense as they cover more area. This example is a good reason why tips like that don't work. In the case of poor lighting, 'going one up' on the strip probably isn't the best fit because more value, more color is the better partner for poorly lit rooms. Would a warmer color have been a better choice in a poorly lit room? Maybe. Maybe not. Since I'm on the topic of tips today, :-D, another one is to align the cool and warm sides of a color wheel with a compass. Meaning the cool side of the color wheel lines up with south and the warm side of the wheel lines up with north. Warm colors are suppose to be the better fit for cool, low light. Cool colors are suppose to go with warm, intense light. Like the other color tip, this north/warm and south/cool color tip has flaws too. A poorly lit room is still going to be a poorly lit room whether it's painted a warm color or a cool color. What changes with color temperature is mood and *feel* in the space. So if you think a warmer wall color would improve your perception of how your poorly lit room would feel, function, and fit with the other elements in the room then a warmer color would have been the better choice. The flip side to that is someone else might perceive the cooler color with the poor light as restful, calm, serene and maybe even more cohesive with the room's contents. So, the warmer and cooler thing is really more about aligning color with desired mood, function, expectations, and color tolerance than it is about trying to manage the quality of light into something that it isn't. Because you're not going to be successful managing the quality of light into something it isn't just by painting the walls -- poorly lit is going to stay that way until you buy more lamps or change window treatments, etc. The subject of paring a dark wall color with poor light is another part of the discussion but not directly relative to you question so I'll skip that and move on. What accents colors will make my walls appear less gray and either more blue or more green? That's the easier question of the bunch. Juxtaposing color that is opposite or complementary to blue and green should help coax out from the gray a sense of more blue or green. Complementary colors would be oranges and reds. If you think about it, Acid green or chartreuse is opposite in a sense too. That kind of vibrant accent color would be opposite the neutralized grayed aspect of Quietude. Opposite and complementary is not exclusive to the level of contrast that is hue, like blue-orange, green-red. Vibrant juxtaposed to dull is a level of color contrast that's available to you to use as well -- and it could very well work to help you feel like some of the grayness of Quietude has been balanced out.

I just saw Ya-Na Kim's program as a replay a couple of minutes ago. Beautiful skate.

Announcer: "The audience is so mesmerized you can hear a pin drop."

Me: Yes. Now shut your yapping pie-hole so those of us can enjoy the program and the music at home.

Does anyone else get fed up with the commentary as much as I do? Talk away during the slow-mo recaps but shut the ---- up during the program.

Nope, I like the commentators. Some of them feel like old friends, and thanks to their explanations of the various elements over the years, I know more about what I'm looking at, and therefore enjoy it more.

In my experience, they're quiet at the right times.

Oh gosh, she took my breath away I don't think I even blinked while she was skating. What a tremendous talent. She truly has the whole package, athleticism, beauty and so very graceful!

I appreciate the announcers as well, and have not found them to be intrusive.

I like when the commentators say what kind of jumps they are attempting but would prefer they stay quiet. I noticed both times Joannie Rochette skated the commentators were quiet. It sounded like Scott Hamilton was crying too much to talk during her performances.

ItÂs amazing how ice skating has evolved over the past 50 years.

I need commentators for skating since it helps me understand what I am watching. Figure skating is quite complicated and has a ton of nuances that the commentators help someone like me, who can barely stand up in ice skates, to understand.

I particularly enjoy the commentators that were actually skaters, like Scott Hamilton, because they know what it feels like to be on center ice. I imagine that Scott was very empathetic towards Joannie Rochette and her having to perform at a world class level after such a horrible personal tragedy.

But Kim was just a lovely and amazing skater.

She was spectacular! . . . now I hope it will ease some of that intense pressure when she gets home.

As I watched Joannie, I imagined she had the spirit of ~ not only her own dear mother, but every mother watching ~ in her support. I know she had mine, as I'm sure that medal will represent much more than what it normally would.

I think the commentators are respectful - especially during the programs of the top skaters, letting us enjoy them. I really do appreciate their play-by-play, though . . . I wouldn't know what was going on with the technical stuff otherwise, lol! (still don't know what they're talking about with those landing/quarter turn/skate closeups, though :)

I think the commentators are much less intrusive than they used to be--just right, imo. I'm tired today! Darn that nbc for broadcasting everything so late.

I understand what you are saying but in the past they used to do little vignettes of tutorials for those watching. As someone who does skate a a bit I find it annoying to hear the same thing over and over again during the performance. They can just as easily explain the elements in between performances.

They talk about toe loops and axles and little else. Edging is barely mentioned except in ice dancing. Nobody seems to comment on some of the horrible traveling these elite skaters do on their spins. Another pet peeve of mine is the cheats at the front of the jumps. A loop for example is an edge jump. It should be taken off from a backward outside edge and landed on a backward outside edge. Yet coaches today are teaching their skaters to do a half turn forward on their toe pick before leaving the ice plus they are allowed a 1/4 turn cheat on the landing. So a single loop can be a mere 1/4 turn in the air. Easier than a waltz jump which is a 1/2 jump front to back. Just because everyone does it doesn't make it right. A cheat is a cheat yet it is considered acceptable today just so everyone can "own" a triple.

So really they are telling the viewer nothing. Just focusing on how many jumps a skater can do is not covering 1/10 of what figure skating is really about.

I liked Dick Button when he was a commentator because he understood how important footwork, stroking, leg extension, spins and transitions and edging are to the over all performance. I see too many skaters just taking giant wide legged steps to transition. They don't stroke, they just step ahead and lunge forward.

Micki Ando is a beautiful girl and she has grown into a graceful appearing young woman but her artistry is so lacking. All the concentration is on her jumps. She looked so tired at the last third of their routine I was afraid she was going to keel over. Not conducive to a great performance. There are a lot like her out there. Talented but lacking basics because the focus of their coaching is jump jump jump.

I know I'm ranting but I'm old school. When I was a kid in roller skating a cheated jump was never allowed. You either nailed them or you didn't.
