Pain in the Arch

Last spring I started training for a 10 mile run. My friend and I ran outside at a park trail 4.5 miles (not paved) every week. We started off slowly, like run a few minutes, walk a few minutes until we built up and could run a few miles at a time. I also ran on the treadmill at the gym 2 times a week. I was always sore after the trail run, but mainly my shins and the sore went away after a day or so. We trained faithfully for about 26 weeks.

I ran my race in Oct and have only run a few times since then (opps). But I continue to go to the gym-kickboxing classes, dancing and walking. So other exercises but not running.

Then I started getting a pain in my left arch. Right in the middle of my foot, deep in the arch. Funny thing, I had NO pain when I ran, it was at random times and in the morning after sleeping. Right now, my foot is achy and I've just been sitting at the computer. I thought by not running as much anymore, it would give my foot time to heal whatever damage I did to it, but that doesn't seem to be the case and that is what freaks me out a bit.

I talked to a serious runner friend who said it basically sounded like plantar fascitis (sp??), but in the arch, not the heel. Comes from overtraining too quickly, being overweight etc. Well I fit both those categories-lol He said a good running store can fit your show for orthotics and it will go away.

Anyone ever had this before? Can orthotics really help that much? Would going to a foot doctor be better? The pain is not awful, but I worry that I am doing serious damage to my foot.

I swear it's a vicious cycle-I'm trying to lose weight by running, but I'm hurting my foot by being overweight and running-ARGH!!!
