A stamp is not intended to be absolute proof that someone is a registered engineer/architect since a registration can expire and not all states require that the stamp be surrendered. Reliable proof of registration (other than the registration board database which is often available online) is the yearly renewable certificate held by the engineer/architect often in the form of a wallet sized card. So, the use of the professional title "engineer" or "architect" on the drawing title block claims the engineer is registered and a signature and stamp on the drawing says the same thing but the signature and stamp is a legal certification that the document was prepared by, or under the direct supervision of, the engineer/architect. I once forgot to stamp a large set of drawings for a $20M project and called the building inspector to tell him that I needed to come to his office to stamp them. He asked me, "is your firm name on the drawings?" and I said, yes and he asked, "did your firm draw them?" and I said yes, and then he said, "that's all the stamp means so we don't need it." On another project I had to initial over two hundred sheets in the office of the city housing authority after they had reviewed them. The advantage to the engineer/architect is that it is easier to identify the drawings that were submitted for a permit because they are the only ones that have a stamp.

I have done both but I mostly use patterns. I get them from magazines frequently but when I was selling I used commercial patterns and books, also. I usually use my own idea as to fabric choices and imbellishments changing things a little to make it different. I've done a house from my design and few other wall hangings. I guess the stacked 4 patch as really my design in a way but it really is a classic pattern-------not sure how to classify things like that. Jayne

As a chronically starving artist, I'm always looking for ways to recycle things. I got the tail end of a roll of newsprint, years ago, from our local newspaper office. It's not ideal for patternmaking (tears easily, isn't see-through) but it was free and as I also do a lot of sketches (and like to let my little nieces and granddaughter draw, when they come over) it has been broadly quite useful. I've also used it, lots, for applique--I cut shapes out of it, pin pieces to it, iron the edges over it, sew the applique pieces down, about 7/8 of the way around, and then since it tears so easily, am able to take tweezers, reach under, and pull out all the paper, then sew down the remaining edge. For something also free, this is what I've been using for drafting smaller pieces of patterns (also good for my applique work): I buy those flat, large desk calenders, and when the months have expired (or if there are months I haven't used), I save the sheets and use them, back side up, to draw on. But I'm going to look into getting some Tyvek, for larger, durable pattern pieces. (You can see some of my applique work at my site--along with some of my jewelry designs, and thanks!)
