Could you show us a close up of the original kitchen one? It's hard to see the color and the material to make a judgement, also can you give the dimensions? Thanks

I think the one in the kitchen would work very well over the dining room table. I'm not a fan of what's over the dining room table now. To me it belongs in a room that is more vintage/shabby chic. Your dining room looks more modern.

Carol, I was going to say the opposite! lol. I think the old kitchen fixture looks too industrial for the soft, countryish style of the dining room. Well, the rug is modern but the rest looks country.

Yes, I like the current fixture hanging in the DR, I would not change unless I was totally going modern/contemporary and towards a more casual feel.

It would certainly be fun to swap them out though and see...

If I loved both fixtures I would swap them out. I think the rectangular one would look good in the dining room and vice versa.

I don't care for the rectangular one much, it might be ok in the right place but not your dining room which is not modern enough.

I love the round one in the DR.

I love the one in the dining room and wouldn't change it! The rectangular one just seems too harsh for the DR as it is. I think it would dominate the room and be the only thing you noticed.

Thanks for all your responses- As I said, I'm not sure I am doing anything any time soon- but definitely something to think about! It's interesting that so many of you see the room as country, some as modern, or even traditional such different styles. I forgot to mention in this post (probably b/c i talked about it at nauseam that i will be re-finishing the table set a dark espresso stain over the summer, exactly b/c my taste is not country (although I like it in other people's homes, it just isn't for me in my home). But i also don't see the room as modern or traditional. I guess my whole house is a mixture- I'm not sure what my style is ( i guess that would be considered transitional?) I just kind of go with what i like or don't like.. If i do decide to change it I will certainly add some posts!! If I don't change it out, anyone want to buy a light fixture? I've run out of options in the house...

I totally agree with DH and think you should just try again to sell the rectangle fixture.
A fixture isn't needed in that area (IMO it looks awkward) and since you can't close up the electrical box where it was hanging, just put in a pot light instead.

Annz- This is what the great room currently looks like- we still have the temporary fixture up, I believe we looked into having pot lights placed where the box was, but they couldn't for some reason- perhaps it is something we should revisit with the electrician..

I like the current fixture in your dining room. will you ever have a rec room? we have a similar fixture over our pool table.

Ah! I see there's a table there! Your current Ikea fixture works nicely and allows a nice open feeling.

@pps7- WE are refinishing the basement and are having a "rec" area, but the ceilings will not be as high as they are upstairs (I think the highest they will be in a very small area are 8' but not enough room to hang the fixture- so I guess we really are out of luck- We have a walk up attic that some day will get finished and most likely be "man land" for my DH so maybe I can save it for that- but that is YEARS away..
Thank you annz- I don't love the current fixture but until we figure out an alternative i guess it's staying. First we need a new table (once my DDS stop doing their nails and art projects on it) so i guess around that time we will look into it again!

I like the current fixture in the current dining room- the space has a very Swedish feel to it.

But, once the table goes dark, I am not sure that I will like the chandy in there as much. I think the rectangular chandy will feel much more at home then (and I do love that fixture!).

I think the current DR fixture might be a nice touch over the kitchen table - picks up on the stainless pieces in the kitchen, and is a nice transition from the very dark feeling of the kitchen to the much lighter feel of the family room space. A bit unexpected, too, and open and airy enough to not create the blocking problem that your DH perceived with the other light.

Thanks Les- That is definitely something to consider-
Once we finish the table- we will be getting rid of the buffet/armoire and getting just a buffet/side table. (we will most likely purchase that and then stain accordingly). i never really thought about moving the dr chancy to the kitchen but now it is consuming my thoughts..LOL...
