Might try going over to Garden Junk Forum & up at top where it says search type in "painting fiberglass pots" I've seen lot of painted pots. 1 gal uses paint & sealer from autmotive store for everything but most pots are clay tho seems like she may have done fiberglass, she makes license plate birdhouses & loves to get "curbside finds". We like reusing things to keep them out of landfills. Lot of interesting things tho they have shown a lot of flower plates & bottle trees lately. Good Luck! Jan

You have a couple options. The brass could be either plated or solid. I would suspect it's plated but you could test it by sanding an edge where it won't be so noticeable first with 400 grit paper to be sure. Some finishes are also clear coated to protect against oxidation but that can be removed with thinner. If you want to paint it you'll first need to remove any clearcoat protection and then sand off the brass plating which will not be a fun job. Then a heavy defect covering primer, to hide those sanding marks, and high temp paint that works together with the primer could be applied. Another option is chemically altering the brass itself with a hobby/craft product like Blacken-it or similar home brew remedies that will change the color but will not rub off like paint can. Do a search for "metal finishing"+brass using say Google and you'll get some product direction. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I'll probably do something in between. I prime just about anything I paint, so I'll do that. I'm kind of afraid to sand because of the danger of scratches. I'm not sure I have the feel for light sanding. I love "if I ever remember to dust". That's me. I'll try to post some before and after pics if I can be that organized. Missy, I don't really have anything to add to the techniques listed above--all good advice. What I did want to mention is that I recently spray painted a brass bed and I used a mixture of Rustoleum Metallic Copper and Metallic Oil Rubbed Bronze and love the way it turned out. I also like Krylon ORB but it really looks black rather than bronzy. The flat black as mentioned by Porkandham above always looks good, too. Looks sort of like iron (imo) when finished.
