The Sega of the 'sick??' employee

Nothing has changed....This week she has called in three days in a row saying she will not be there....and here was her excuse.

Her daughter has a fever. My daughter said...Well I can understand that...I'd stay home if the kids were sick !

Son in law said....."HER DAUGHTER IS 26 YEARS OLD"

I talked to him about keeping track of all of this.He IS doing that...He has talked to his boss...and to the Human Resources .....so far nothing.

He wouldn't be so upset but he has to pull his hours and half of hers everytime she doesn't show. The other guy who is covering for the other half has been complaining too...

Sounds like this employee has a severe health issue or worse an addiction.

I would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and advice. BTW, the cats really look so much better, and it's not just my hopeful imagination. They continue to have that nasty sneeze, but it doesn't seem to slow them down at all, at least not anymore. The missing fur is growing back, and they are all bulking up slightly. And, of course, I am now their new best friend in the whole wide world. Mew! Mew! Mewwwwwwwwwwwww!! I will respond to some of the comments made by Patrick. And BTW, it's not because I'm emotionally unreasonable. It's because he has made some unsupported and unsupportable statements. Patrick, you fail to offer a solution to those of us who find themselves with animals and lack the wherewithal to provide the "minimum standards" you also fail to define. Would you have me shoot or otherwise euthanize the cats? You have jumped to the conclusion that these cats have a chronic disease. How can you possibly know that? You claim that providing anything less than optimum professional care is unacceptable, so just what would you suggest as a responsible course of action? You certainly disapprove of taking advantage of any low-cost vet services, as well as shelter services, so is the only alternative you see is to kill them, Patrick? I personally don't find that ethical or palatable. In fact, I'd call that reckless and irresponsible. I'd like to hear some concrete, ethical suggestions from you as opposed to what you've offered so far. I happen to agree with you that vets should not be expected to provide low-cost services, however when one does, then there is nothing wrong with using those services. I also refuse to take the cats to a shelter exactly for the reasons you state. Shelters generally survive on scant funds and I would never ask them to provide expensive treatment for animals that will never be suitable as domestic companions. You imply that I chose these cats and that I own them. You state that I "keep and breed" these animals. I no more keep and breed the cats than I do the barn swallows. They arrive and set up shop all on their own. Just like the barn swallows, I am generally happy to benefit from their presence, but that's about as far as it goes. Further, I don't "allow" them to be stepped on by cows, or hit by cars. The only way to prevent this would be to confine or eliminate them, both untenable solutions. I wonder, do you have barn cats? Danger is the name of the game when you're a semi-feral cat. You jump to the conclusion that they face risk because they are unhealthy. This is another unsupported assertion. It is a fact that even the healthiest farm cats can and often do die prematurely. So, I am right back where I started: I will do as much as I am able to do for these cats without shooting them and without taking them to a vet. There is nothing "quite nervy" about that. I continue to be unpersuaded that my choices are either ethically or morally unsound.

My experience has been you see what you want to. When it comes to tobacco and alcohol, the primary labor pool for landscaping is young men. Any surprise they drink and smoke? Add to that the similarities with most construction trades, and the noticed lack of "genteel" peoples in these trades, you better expect that they imbibe. Further, it's a seasonal trade. When you are hiring at a certain time of the year and want people who can work your schedule, weather permitting, you tend to notice a distinct lack of qualified applicants if you start asking too many questions. My experience has been the opposite of what is mentioned above. I've worked for a couple of guys who would buy the crew a case or two of beer after a hard week...always on Friday, and always to be had at the shop, after everything is put away, after you punch out. Drinking or smoking anything that could impair motor reflexes with the presence of power quipment...yeah, good way to get really hurt, or if you're lucky, dead. Most of the landscapers I know are pretty gung-ho individuals. What they do, they do pretty hard. It's time to work, and you better not get in their way. Same when it's time to party. Most, however, have known how to keep the two separate. Then there was the one job...where we laid 1800 square yards of sod a day. Every day of the week, six days a week. Inevitably, someone would show up on one of the early Saturdays with a hangover, thinking they could gt the job of driving the tractor or the forklift. The boss had been through that before. They worked on the ground, bending over, laying sod until it was done. Funny thing, for the rest of the year, no one came to work with a hangover again.

Hi Josie, I'm late in posting my comment, but someone else already did. I'd sick my hubby on him, and be done with dealing with this guy. I own a business, and even in this day, there are times I have male clients that would rather deal with a man. I can tell by the disrespectful way that they speak with me. My initial reaction is to tell them where to go - but it's business. My husband is also my business partner - so rather than lose a customer, I take the easiest way to get to the common goal with our company and our client. It's hard to stomach in this age - most men are happy to deal with us both - either one of us, male or female. But it is what it is.... so it's easiest to just accept it because you're not going to change them. I find that the ol Dr. Phil saying comes into play here "How's that workin' for ya?". That's why they hired an Oprah look-a-like with a duplicate set, to host the announcement. The whole thing is a marketing ploy and I would love to revisit this thread July 1, 2008 to see what great deeds have been performed. Is the list going to be made public? The employees get free money to give to whomever they want, and the whole thing is a huge tax write-off for the bank garnering tons of publicity to attract investors to the bank. I'd be more impressed if each one of them donated a kidney or something. Or banded together to forgo their hefty end of the year bonus and donated that. Call me a cynic and a realist. Well.... one of my coworkers called in sick one day last week. His reason? He said his "lips are swollen."

He's supposed to work 7:00 am until 4:00 pm with an hour for lunch. IF he comes in, he goes home sick at 11:00, four days out of five. He doesn't have enough sick leave or vacation hours to cover all his time off -- he's out on FMLA. He earns 8 hours sick leave and 14 hours vacation each month.

Although I am in synpathy for those who are really sick, but there are some who seem to think the world just stops and waits untill they are ready to go back to work. I used to work at a restaurant as a wait person and some of the younger gals would call in "sick" on weekends. When I would run into them out and about and confront them, they would say well, the restaurant didn't have to pay them, so there was no loss to them. I tried to explain to them, yes, the business didn't have to pay them, but customers still came in to be served, and someone had to server them. Being the gal chose not to come to work, I had to do my work AND their too, but only got paid for my time. They just never seemed to get it. It seems that there is getting to be less and less of work ethic. Its getting to be more of a "Me, Mine" world, and to he!! with anyone else.

I used to work in a company where a couple employees ABUSED the leave policy every which way they could! Come in late, leave early all the time, out sick for days etc. It was literally a 50/50 chance whether they'd be at work. And I'd feel guilty about playing hooky once or twice a YEAR! One supervisor started keeping track of all the time and excuses. Yet they kept their jobs??? Management turned a blind eye!! One woman is still there-she must have dirt on someone? The morale got so bad, I gladly took a pay cut to get out of that place ASAP!!

Our policy is if you are out three days in a row you must bring a doctors note with you when you return. I had an employee who was always late and then called in all the time with the stupid excuses, (I think he used "I had a flat tire" about a dozen times). He used all his sick leave and vacation time so his back was against the wall. So I just started docking him for the time he missed and then documented the days he was late (with the excuses). It was a pain for me but that started the ball rolling and sure enough he is gone now. He worked his way into a big hole with warning letters through the final "one more time and you're gone!" letter. He quit right before he was going to be terminated.

Don't forget to put some of the blame on the legal system who advertise how you can sue corporations for terminating you. I work for a huge worldwide corporation. When you want to terminate someone, you must keep fastidious records for months about their performance (or lack thereof!). You must also meet with the employee on a weekly basis to go over their progress, and send them to additional training, time management, personal development, whatever......and document this. Employee also needs to sign the "progress reports".

During all this, the employee is getting paid, and the department suffers from lack of qualified or fully engaged coworker.

All this so that you are not sued for letting someone go (who deserves it!), where it might be perceived that the corporation was at fault for not helping this individual and giving them every opportunity to improve performance and attitude.

Sheesh...at 16, I was fired from a bakery job after 90 minutes because the boxes weren't folded correctly. LMAO!!!!!!!!

I think the company is worried about being sued by her for discrimination. So they're letting it go. The other guy who picks up her 4 hours, needs to go in and complain too.
I had to go to work many many times when one of my kids had a fever. And when I had a fever myself. We weren't given any sick leave. You better get well in 2 or 3 days, or then you had to go to the Dr. and get a release to go back to work. That on top of the lost wages for the hours not worked, hurt the paycheck.
Did SIL get any kind of contract when hired? If he did, she did to. I'd be looking it over for anything in it about this problem. Also, he should bring up reverse discrimination.

I have suggested this before. Sil and other coworker need to be unavailable fo a while. Get a hobby, make a date, or sign up for dance classes or something where they can't be there. Make it the management's problem instead of theirs.

At my job, you need a doctor's note for any absence over 3 days. There's also the Family Medical Leave Act, a federal law that says you can take time off to care for a sick relative. That 26 year old may have serious medical issues.
