painting over 'sponged finish' paint

My living room is currently painted using Ralph Lauren's "sponged finish" technique, and I want to re-paint the room. Do I need to sand before I paint? Or what? The current finish does have a slightly raised texture. I'd appreciate help, and the more details, the better.

Also, what kind of paint rollers should I use with BM Navajo White paint? Again, the more specificity, the better. I know the subjects of best brushes and rollers have been previously discussed a lot on the forum but those posts are among the lost ones.

Well, if you are wanting a smooth painted wall finish , then yes you would need to sand away "ALL" of the little lumps and bumps of the raised paint. I would suggest using an electric sander. The work would go much faster for you. As far as the grit of paper to use, that would depend on how raised is raised on the finish. I would at least start out with a 180- medium grit. Be careful using the sander . Keep it moving all the time and watch your approach to prevent any gouges.

After you have finished sanding, wipe away all of the sanding debris and reprime your walls. Don't forget to wear a mask.

For your smooth wall surface, 3/8th would be fine. Purdy dralon ; corona brushes.

Sanding is permitted "IF" you use a wet sanding sponge and dump the water residue down a sanitary sewer (toilet) The thing you want to accomplish is to keep lead particles from being airborne, hence the wet sanding and washing, rinsing. Review the EPA booklet on lead paint prior to any remodeling or repainting. There are primers out there they may be of use over the walls. Zinsser offers Peel Stop as a coating to lock down the peeling paint. Of course, without seeing your project, I can only suggest you get someone to view it prior to moving in that direction. Michael

IMO, an orbital sander is a better choice than an actual finishing sander. Those cheap finishing sanders just vibrate your forearms into oblivion but don't do much sanding. Perhaps you can rent a good one....all of mine are Bosch and I love them.
