Yes, Live wire oak is correct, there is a class of cabinetry called frameless inset. There is no faceframe, just the edge of the plywood box is visible (always 3/4" plywood). The strange bit is when two cabinets abut, and you are treated to the view of two adjacent cabinet edges, and there is an objectionable seam. If the cabinetmaker was up to it, making runs of cabinets one-piece would permit the "doubling" to be eliminated. If you look at the Blum website, there is a hinge made just for frameless inset types. Casey

Thank you Boxerpups, Karena, Mcraney and Lindiver for all your wonderful pictures and tips. Basically, my inspiration kitchens are like jenos with a cherry island and scottielee again with a dark cherry island. As you can see, scottielee has a fantastic transitional style and I can see this taking shape in my kitchen without the glaze. The problem is picturing these type of kitchens with light glazing....they just seem to go French country which is not where I am thinking of heading - but may have to reevaluate. The light fixture I was contemplating is Framburg Hyperion and as you can see, that is the platinum finish that would match to polished nickel hardware. The shiny metal hardware really appeals to me as a jewelry accent. It just is hard to picture again with glazing, not really seeing much of it in these pictures. We are having the cabinets custom made, so I could probably tailor the amount of glaze down to the bare minimum. The other complicating factor, for me, is that so many of these kitchens use nickel, chrome, or silver color...and yet the rest of my house has so much gold. Ten years ago, when we bought much of our furniture and accessories, gold was so much more common. Not as easy as I would have hoped!

The origin of the word "pantry" meant "bread room", which even in its origins meant other things as well as bread. Roots, apples and other long storage veg would be in a root cellar or similar cold, damp room. Anything canned or preserved would be in a "still room". The "dairy" itself was usually an outbuilding where the butter was churned, etc. There would often be a stream through it for chilling and storing the dairy products. Meats were stored in the "larder" (think lard, or lardon (French for bacon)). "Stores" were storerooms where casks and bags of all kinds of stuff, from grains to candles were kept. Casks of beers and similar, as well as wine, would be a store called the "buttery" (room for "butts" or casks). So the kinds of things that might be in a pantry would be bread, pastries, possibly cooked meats or other dishes (i.e., leftovers), and other production of the kitchen. The pantry was an "office" or room assigned to a particular job/jobholder. In a grand house, the butler was originally in charge of the wines (as well as spirits), which were often one of the biggest assets in a household, and one that needed protecting from thievery. The word comes from the French for "bottle". At some point the butler, or perhaps a second butler, was put in charge of the silver because it was highly tempting to thieves as well. Eventually that expanded to include all the fine tableware. A "butler's pantry" is a Victorian kind of room, in a smaller than estate sized house (i.e, upper middle class), that could support a couple of servants, but not a whole flock of them. It's the place where the fine tableware is stored, and may also have a sink so the butler (or mom) can wash and polish the good stuff and put it away without endangering it in the hustle bustle of the kitchen. And a modern pantry in a modern house is a large closet or room for holding whatever needs putting away. A built in pantry is less expensive to construct, and often bigger, than a pantry cabinet. My own pantry is a grouping of four cabinets which holds beverages, wine, pasta, grains, sauces and condiments, canned goods, extra wraps, less used kitchen serving pieces, paper goods, etc. Some people put their small appliances in their pantries, as well as their roots, and breads. I haven't seen the one I had in mind. I really think it looked like I described it. The one Maggie linked, the Sweet Savannah pantry that Boxerpups also showed, has a lot of the same feel to it. Combine most of its depth with the doors on the first brown one Red Eared showed and make it gray and you pretty well have it.

Boxerpups-I got married in 1990, too! No wonder your wedding dress sounded so familiar, LOL! Except mine didn't have a train...
I'll be about 8 months pregnant on our 21st anniversary, (but even if I wasn't-highly doubtful the dress would still fit!). It would probably fit my 15 yo dd perfectly, though...
My dress was everything I said I didn't want when I walked into the dress shop. No lace, no puffy sleeves, no tiers or ruffles. :) It has all of those.

boxer & timber--was it a turtleneck too?

Why did I "preserve" that dress? My dd's would just die if I offer it to them. That train is long enough that it could actually make a nice drop cloth.

btw--1986, and yes, that means #25 is this April.

We were married in 1971 - our 40th this year - YIKES!
Think empire waist - short puffy sleeves and Juliet cap veil, LOL. Oh and the florist told me I couldn't carry a bouquet of wildflowers, just wasn't done. Told me my flowers needed to be all white, and I let her talk me into it. Hated my bouquet! But love my MOH bouquet - multi colored wildflowers! And NO, I'm not showing anyone. Funny how frozen in time styles can be......like all of our kitchens will be in 15/20 years!

You guys make me laugh. I wore the "turtleneck" gown, and the big hat with the veil! What can I say it was the 70's, a very bad decade for fashion. The gown I loved at the time but I sure do wish someone would have talked me out of that hat! Our daughter is getting married this spring and wants to use family wedding pictures at the reception. Ours will be good for a laugh at least.

Married in '76. Candlelight white, beaded, train, veil. Married in August and church wasn't air conditioned (in Detroit). As we were standing at the alter saying our vows, sweat was running down my veil. I kept having to dab at my forehead and everybody thought I was crying! LOL! The one thing that went awry was our pictures. :(

Bee! We'll also be celebrating our 25th this year...March 1. Fortunately my dress wasn't hideous IMO. I wore my mother's lace dress from 1953. I think it is just as beautiful today. My poodle hair perm from the 80s, however, was a different story. In fact I can't stand looking at my portrait because of the awful hair. Now the bridesmaids' dresses...OMG. Hot pink, puffy sleeves and I made them wear hoop skirts underneath. Eeek.

I got remarried in 2005 and my dress, too, was everything I didn't want. I wanted ivory chiffon with long sleeves. I bought green (yes, GREEN) sleeveless satin with lace-up back. My husband-to-be kept saying "green? GREEN?" I went in to try the dress on at a shop that had one so I could order it in my size and color and fell in love with it.

My first wedding dress was one made by my aunt, my mom and myself that I made up as we went along. It had a long train, was silk satin and had 'cutouts' in the train, the latest thing at that time.

I do have my green gown on CD, but unfortunately nothing digital from my first 27 years ago!

I had a very small wedding and wore a white knee length dress in 1984. But, I also had the "poodle perm!" We celebrated our 25th by having a dinner party back at the restaurant that we were married in.

Although I will be 48 in June, we will only be celebrating our 5th anniversary this summer. My dress is not embarrassing--yet! I still love it! It's very simple pale ivory chiffon. It has ruching on the front, but the pics I have are very full-on cleavage!

I need to donate it to Making Memories/Brides Against Breast Cancer. They only want dresses 5 years old or newer, so I do not have a lot of time left. It is boxed and preserved in the closet, and it takes up a lot of space. I had my veil boxed separately, so I will keep that!

Of course, this dress is about an 8 and I am about a 12 right now. Thanks for nothing, hypothyroid. These are pro pics, but we did buy the rights to the CD, so I am not voilating copyright.

Now, my sister's wedding in the 70's, that's another story! I was junior bridesmaid, and we had floral print satiny peasant dresses with cumberbands and matching picture hats! Yes, they are still married.

I was married in March of 91, so 20 years next month for me! I'm gutsy enough to post a picture (long sleeves, straight, all lace, with a train) but not of my face. I still had BRACES when I got married and looked like I was about 12. My dress would still fit. I should break it out and take some new, braces-less pics. ;o)

Thanks, boxerpups! Since neither DH nor I had been married before, we wanted the formal event. I only had two attendants, though.

Yes, thanks gscience, boxer and bee for sharing your photos. You all made lovely brides. I have to say though that I prefer these styles over the strapless gowns that all the brides now seem to be choosing.

BP, that is classic. Even the attendants aren't over the top. Hints of the times, sure, but it's basic princess styling and you can't go wrong there.

GSC, BKW, not bad either, although you both need glasses!

I would have worn my mother's--her grandmother was a seamstress and made it in a classic midcentury style. I tried it one once and couldn't zip it. "I guess I had a smaller behind than you and wasn't as busty then!" says mom. I get a butt complex (not really--but what kid wants to know her mom was slimmer than her?). A few years later I haul it out again, to see just how bad it was and if I could wear it. Mom reminisces about working with her grandmother on the dress, and how her grandmother then altered it to fit mom's tiny best friend...HEY! Just a minute!

Love the wedding dress stories! 15 years ago my wedding dress was a simple, short, white linen sundress bought 2 days before our toes-in-the-sand beach wedding (actually an elopement of sorts). I still wear it as a beach coverup, which DH, DS and I get a kick out of! I love the fact that it's well used and loved, but I don't think I'll be passing it on to a DIL...More likely it will end up in the cotton cleaning rag pile. LOL!

I don't know why you're all bashing hats. I love them! But they do only work for an outdoor affair. Sure, you can wear a pillbox type inside, but the brimmed hats...outdoors with 'em!

The red and white dresses are awesome. Not necessarily in a good way, but that is one bridesmaid dress I'd keep.

OK - here are a couple of bad pictures of pictures. My sister and her lovely hat and me in my wedding dress. Nothing fluffy - simple lace. My daughter did wear my veil - the lace on the edge matched her dress exactly.

Yup Jackie-O pill box hat custom made. I wonder if the dress is still in good shape in that sealed box that we are not suppose to open?? Seeing I only had boys, it will prob end up being a dress up dress for a granddaughter someday. I tried on my senior prom dress a month ago.. NO WAY rib's are out further(dang 11 lb baby), and I'm sticking to that story!! CJC

This is such a fun thread---we're only on month 7 and I'd been debating whether or not to hang on to the dress since it's on my "things to deal with when we finish the kitchen" list, but this convinced me that I should, even if I never actually wear it again! :)

O my goodness. Wonderful. Little house on the prairie wedding party--I'm not making fun! Prill, I wish that look would return (your dress is rather timeless, actually!). The bridesmaid dress and hat are adorable. I can't believe I used that word.

CJC, THAT hat is a proper indoor service hat! The bow on the back of the dress looks uncomfortable, though, as does the guy's hand! ;p The flowery dress in the group photo--had it. (Still have it maybe?)

KA, I'd wear that today (if it were shin length and not white and if it would look that good on ME)! They look like large sleeves, but not puffy! That's very elegant. Don't let the kid wear it out until she's marryin' age!

i LOVE this thread! thanks so much for posting your pics. i enjoy seeing all of them. i got married in '92 in the heat of august. had to wait for hubby to finish with exams. i was working at W back then and we had just done a story on a new wedding dress designer named carmela sutera.
i drew my dream dress and brought it to her -and she loved it so much she did a similar version for her line that year, minus the sleeves. i was too young to care that she ripped me off and just so happy to have a custom dress. she charged me half her custom fee which was still too much!
looking at this picture now, i'm sorry dh and i didn't wear those very chic glasses boxer is sporting. oh well, live and learn...

Oh I hope I'm able to find a picture. Unfortunately the things like that are packed in the moving boxes while we are in a rental. I never thought about the fact that my dress with long sleeves was "out of style." I got married March 1 and it snowed the night before. I would have never dreamed of wearing a sleeveless dress that time of year.

My cousin flew out to NY the week before and we went to Liberty and bought a black floral-print dress. I loved that thing. I got my sil to chose flowers like it
(she has many green thumbs and likes to arrange flowers, so she setup in a friends' house to do them for our wedding.) We opted for flying out musician-friends of mine and having a three-day extravanganza with dance and teas and the like rather than just pouring me into a dress. The only time I've ever had an iota of regrets is ... looking at your pictures! They are a ton of fun.
