cream cabinets and black hardware - is this a look?
Comments (16)My kitchen is a 1940's throwback. The house has not been updated much over the years, though I am aware of a partial remodel of the bath and attic in the 60's. The cabinets run to the ceiling, they are flat doors and quite tall and deep, unlike a lot of the newer ones I've seen in stores. the hardware is all art deco, empire state building look, which I like as well, but is in in a shiny silver tone. I don't mind the 40's style, and it is very charming. Back then they didn't have a lot of cabinetry and I need more, as well as counter space and the little hexagon tile counter top is a real pain to keep clean. the kitchen is almost completely white and although this looks quaint, I need more color. As far as Tuscan style. I may have misspoke, it is Italian built, but not the romantic Tuscany that is so popular in decorators magazines. It is a brick house with wrought iron features and stone accents. No golden plaster walls and terracotta tile roofs here, unfortunately. I do have black accents in the living room decor, so I think it will be a good mix. I do like the oil rubbed bronze, it is practically as dark as black only softer. mdmc, your kitchen is just beautiful, I do really like the counter tops there seems to be a very dark, almost black spots throughout or is that just lighting? Is it mostly tans and browns? Thank you everyone for the pictures, I did not even know there was a finished kitchens blog!...See MoreBlack kitchen countertop/White cabinets...island?
Comments (5)I know you requested black, but I'd like to also suggest Antique Brown (not to be confused with Labrador Antique!!) It's so dark, DH still says our countertops are black! But when you see it next to a black cooktop you can tell it's warmer than straight black. It's very very deep and gives a warmer look than straight black. It's kind of a solid look but with soft movement and some sparkles in certain spots (not all over). It's not super common and it is a pricier granite. It's very pretty. Photos don't do this granite justice. It's almost like the movement is under the surface b/c it's subtle, varied, and so pretty! Online it looks more spotty than it really is. We get tons of compliments and questions about it b/c it's not very common. Here are some photos of ours that are in our current house: Claxx66 posted a photo w/ white cabinets in '08 here on GW: Random online photos: Up close:...See MoreCabinet Color . . . cream, gray, black?

Is Cream Dated?
Comments (2)Things feel dated when they were done by everybody without regard to their space, just because everyone was doing them. If you love creams, always loved creams, and the house you build will look great with them, given its location, style, your concept, light it gets, etc-no, won't look dated. Colors by themselves can't be "dated". They're too independent of us:) Only our impressions of combinations of them, our perceptions etc, that are usually very personal, can make them feel dated. So, to summarize.. No:) Use whatever you love and whatever your house will like most....See More- 15 years ago
