Black kitchen countertop/White cabinets...island?

Recently just did a 180 in my kitchen countertop design plan and all of the sudden just love the crisp clean look of a black granite on the white cabinets we chose. Had planned along to go with a white quartzite (White princess was the front runner) - but just totally switched gears. Any thoughts on an island counter material to explore with this combination? Wood floors and a white island? Thanks!

Or a grey island (a light or medium grey, or a greenish or a blueish grey). Wood floors sound gorgeous.

I still think you could go with the white princess on the island. I think that would be great. What is the use of the island?

I do not know how the oil rubbed bronze finish will be affected. Our has the dark brown patina finish as you can see but the outside of the sink will probably never change in color because no water or other juices touch it. The inside of our sink can get black rings if we leave dishes or pots and pans in it overnight where it is wet or if there were food juices in the sink. But, that goes away after 2-3 days. We love the sink and it is soooo easy to keep clean. Basically rinse it out or put dish soap in it. You can also basically 'seal' the sink with wax...that would also limit the 'patina-ing' of your sink. Good luck and if you have any questions, let me know. And for louisianaPurchase--the antiqued countertop is very easy to keep clean. Fingerprints don't show up anywhere near as much as I thought. In fact, hardly at all unless someone has very greasy fingers. It is just a quick wipedown...the antiqued quality has probably made all the difference with that.

This is a personal preference. I myself like white cabinets with tan granite (or butcher block), but it's not a right or wrong thing. If you've wanted-wanted-wanted the white/white combination forever, give yourself a week or two to mull over whether black would make you just as happy. In the long run, though, this is a pretty important detail in your house, and I'll remind you of this little quip: "The bitterness of low quality is forgotten long after the sweetness of low price has lost its flavor." Okay, we're not talking about low quality, but if you change it to, "not getting what you really want", the quotation works. Secondary point: Just how important is the kitchen to you? For me, the kitchen would be of uptmost importance, and I'd balk at being forced towards a second-choice item. On the other hand, if your question was about the laundry room, I'd say, "I value the space, but I could absolutely live with my second-choice of countertop." And, finally, remember that everything can't be a tip-top choice. You have to be honest with yourself about just how much those "couple thousand" mean to your budget.

I'm sure you have them, but I don't see any lights in this kitchen. Before trying to select colors, I would replace lights with 4,000K LED bulbs (or maybe 3,500K if you find the others too bright,) Don't forget LEDs under your upper cabinets. Then prime with 2 coats of KILZ or Zinzer over the blue. Sample by painting foam core or poster board in the colors you are considering. Move them around the room at different times of day/night, weather conditions etc., to see how they'll really look.

I am in the process of doing this exact setup. I'll have white perimeter counters and black quartz counters. My island is black with a butcher block counter stained to match the wood floors. The entire kitchen is ripped up right now, but am hoping to have it done by July 1. If you can wait that long, I'll post pix then. HTH.

I know you requested black, but I'd like to also suggest Antique Brown (not to be confused with Labrador Antique!!) It's so dark, DH still says our countertops are black! But when you see it next to a black cooktop you can tell it's warmer than straight black. It's very very deep and gives a warmer look than straight black. It's kind of a solid look but with soft movement and some sparkles in certain spots (not all over). It's not super common and it is a pricier granite. It's very pretty. Photos don't do this granite justice. It's almost like the movement is under the surface b/c it's subtle, varied, and so pretty! Online it looks more spotty than it really is. We get tons of compliments and questions about it b/c it's not very common. Here are some photos of ours that are in our current house:
