Twilitezone, I know this is a very late response but it saddens me to see how disrespectful and inconsiderate people are. Regardless of whether there is a code violation with the neighbor's unit or not it is a such thing as respecting one's right to peace in and around their homes. What puzzles me is this neighbor moved his unit from his patio because of the noise but he has located it closer to your home, now you have to deal with the noise from the AC unit that he didn't want to hear. Stop being nice to these inconsiderate people and take action. You have asked nicely for them to relocate the unit. And if you step foot in an environmental court or general sessions, it will not work to the neighbors advantage since he moved the unit to the offending spot. It wasn't already there so he has moved the nuisance to you, which may be illegal according to some of the things I read in your ordinance. I hope that you are not taking the ignorance that is spewed all over this page thinking you donÂt stand a chance against these people. I read the ordinance you provided the link to and I tell you what, you have a very detailed set of ordinances to use against your neighbor. You should speak with an attorney. He should be ordered to relocate the unit if he hadnÂt already. Some nerve, he moves the nuisance to you and tells you it won't be that big of a difference. And for those of you people who think that you can do whatever you want to on your property, including making noises and disturbing your neighbors with your yard equipment, AC units etc., you need to think again you cannot do whatever you want to do on your property when it involves disturbing others or breaking laws.

My son lives up in Simsbury, CT, and has a home there for his mother-in-law. I asked him to write up his experience with a portable room unit. He wrote, "Sure-- here's our info-- We went with a Whynter 12000 BTU dual hose model. We really had no option for a window unit in the room we were addressing. We do have small window units in other bedrooms. The noise is definitely significant, but at least the noise is a constant drone, without the vibrations of window frames. This unit was installed with two hoses (intake and output), so we put two holes in an external wall. We bought the unit back in 2011 and have no issues mechanically. There has never been anything to drain, and had no leaks. It's on wheels, so storage has been no problem. It's met all our needs. It was warm and pleasant here today, but did not need the AC. Tonight I notice there is a tornado watch for much of Arkansas, Missouri and west Tennessee. That's what happens when it is unseasonably warm here. I just found myself a new screen saver from Birds and Blooms.... a beautiful huge snow scene. That's how I enjoy snow best! Rose

Hi! Thanks for all the advice. I went to help her set things up and to look at it in order to decide how to provide privacy. I decided to get ceiling tracks (found some at BBB for $9.99 on sale from $39!). I got 4 tracks of 48" each to cover the 12' span. I'm going to attach to the ceiling and I made 4 blackout curtain panels (bought ready-made panels from Target and added blackout fabric to them) to hang on the tracks. The opening at the staircase will not be covered so light will come in there, but for privacy that will be okay. She'll decide later if she wants something added there. So here's is my final question: The ceiling is 9' tall and the half-wall is 4'. So that leaves a 5' space to fill with the curtains. I am all done making them except to hem to the final length. Should I have them extend beyond the top of the half-wall, so maybe hem them to 65" or so? I was thinking that if the curtains are a little bit longer than the opening, they would stay closed better if there are slight breezes from AC or the nearby ceiling fan. Would about 5" extra inches be sufficient, or should it be more, like 10 or 12"? So far: Ikea bed with drawers, over-bed storage rack form BBB, a soft-sided Ikea wardrobe, Ikea shelf with plastic bins (instead of a wooden dresser), shelf from BBB. Adding soon, a small laptop desk and a swivel chair from Ikea with will fit at te foot of the bed where there are about 4' left. We realize nothing matches but we were going for function and had to choose from what was available.
