Shelves in mudroom cabinetry too shallow

We've just renovated a mudroom/powder room, with (expensive) semi-custom cabinetry from Cabico. The mudroom wall has a bench, cubbies with closed cabinets on top, and an open bookcase/shelves:
The shelves in the closed cabinets (on mudroom wall and in pantry units on other side of room) fit well; they extend from the front to the back of the cabinets. The shelves in the open bookcase, however, are too shallow. There is a gap of 1.25" between the shelf and the rear wall, if they are pushed to the back, in the front - they barely clear the holders. It seems to me that they made a mistake, and didn't account for the fact that the unit was backless. I've started an email correspondance with the designer but so far he is saying that they are standard. This is semi-custom cabinetry, and I think that someone made a mistake, and that they should replace the shelves.
Any opinions?

NO DRAWERS for the 15" deep section -- I'll go w/ shelves there and put the drawers in the small part of the L (the one w/ 24" front to back). next question ... what about the Door Heights in front of the shelves? We have to have doors as the pantry is a thorough-fair between our family room and the kitchen .. so we can't just have all our food showing. Our ceilings are 12' high ..but the walk-through is only 6 feet wide ..so anything too tall will look silly. We are planning to have about 8 feet of shelves (height wise) but not sure how to break that down in terms of how high to get each cabinet door... So assume we have 90" of horizontal space and say around 8 feet high. Should we break that down into 3 x 30" wide cabinets each w/ 2 doors? If so ..how about the height of each cabinet? Should we have the base cabinet the normal counter height 34" or so and then the top cabinet really tall? THESE are the cabinets we're REPLACING . it looks like a walk in now -- but we've broken down the wall on the right hand side and removed the door. My question is when I basically rebuild those shelves on the LEFT .. and put doors in front of them ... I'll have Left to Right 3 sets of 30" wide cabinets. How do I configure them TOP TO BOTTOM ... do I have a 34" high base cabinet and then a 46" high upper? given the narrow space worried that a really tall upper will look weird....See MoreMudroom cabinet design help (sorry OT)
Comments (37)Have you considered doors for at least some of the cabinets? I worry about the visual clutter of having everything sitting out there, especially when kids are doing much of the putting-away. I'm less worried about the crowded feeling by the door than many of the others, but I also live in a smallish house where space by the doors is at a premium. I thought you might find these photos helpful. They're of a small cabinet by our back door. The door is hemmed in by a wall on one side and this cabinet to the other. The cabinet is about 7.25 inches deep from the front of the doors to the back of the cabinet that runs into the dishwasher, providing an interior space that's about 5.25 inches deep. We live not far from you and share your weather, and this tiny cupboard is a lifesaver because it provides a space for wet shoes, bird seed, and assorted other things we use outside.You have a significantly deeper space, so it will be even more functional. It also doesn't feel claustrophobic or too tight to us, and the small loss of space by the door is far outweighed by not having things pile up on the counter and floor there! Here's the doorway with cabinet: Here's the interior, showing how shallow it is, but how much stuff we store there. It regularly gets crammed with much more stuff (all the more reason to have doors!), but I'd just cleaned it out when I snapped this photo. Please ignore the cardboard dividers in the cabinet--I didn't want to have permanent dividers put in, and I've been playing around with spacing before buying or making something for the space. As for the bench issue, I think that its utility may somewhat depend on if you're shoes-off or shoes-on people. If you leave shoes by the door, then it's helpful to have a place for the kids to sit down to put them on. I think you'll love having some sort of built-in cabinet there. Comments (13)Hi johnliu. We just did what you are talking about. Our kitchen is so tiny (11' x 9') that we had to find every inch of available space. One of our walls is between the kitchen and a staircase; it's a standard wall made with 2 x 4s. My husband opened up the wall and devised sets of shelves sized to accept Avsikt glass doors from Ikea. The shelves themselves are wood. There will be six of these "cabinets" altogether, three lowers and three uppers. Picture six Avsikt glass doors nestled into a wall. The back side of the wall (the stairside wall) will be sheetrocked. The shelves are not quite finished and have no doors yet, but so far, I love them. They are 5" deep. I'm using them right now to store my glass spice jars at comfortable eye level. The jars are all the same size and have simple labels, so I hope they will look OK behind glass. The shallow width is also becoming useful for other tiny items that hog cabinet space -- short jars of organic honey, cans of tomato paste and roasted peppers, bags of sundried tomatoes, little boxes of tea, anchovies, and boxes of sugar-free Jello. The lower set of shelves holds my 21 old glass mayo jars full of dried goods -- beans, lentils, shitake mushrooms, popcorn, elbow macaroni, raisins, and other items bought in bulk from our local co-op. These jars are all the same size too, they all have white plastic lids, and the contents are sort of colorful, so I hope they won't look too bad either once they get their glass doors. I don't plan to illuminate these shelves; visually, it would be too noisy for my contemporary kitchen. There's a lot of glass stored inside and I have quarry tiles for flooring, so I'll have to be extremely careful not to drop anything. No glass stands a chance against quarry tile. Comments (8)I agree with an earlier poster - steal some space between the studs (like a medicine cabinet and then add on your amount you don't mind extending into the kitchen and I'd turn it into a floor to top shelves for canned goods! Imagine how wonderful that would be to open it up and see everything you have on hand - one deep, not 6 deep! My Mom did something similar and LOVED that cabinet. And then at Chest Height you could have an extra tall space for a little message center. Keys, Cork Board, and phone charger. Can I make one other suggestion on your plan to consider.... In your penisula you have what appears to be a 33" roll out base with two slide shelves. I would suggest you consider two mega drawers. Why? To pullout your shelves is a two motion step - open both doors super wide open and then pull out shelf. Drawers are a simple, pull open and look! I have a 33" wide set of drawers and I love them.... I have one for all my casseroles and one for the tupperware/storage containers, and two small above the extra wide ones. Oh, and final advantage, nothing ever falls off the shelves into the back of the cabinet! Also, by doing a 33" sink base, you can have a symmetrical corner cabinet.
