No gifts birthday party

My 2 DD's were invited to a birthday party by a friend of mine. Their DD is turning 3. They are having the party at a local "House of Bounce" place. Basically, the kids go wild on moon bounces and then you have pizza. It's a nice place, but expensive $$$ for a whole party.

The invite says just bring smiles, no presents. So, I feel strange not bringing anything, but I can respect their wishes. I know the mom volunteers at the local animal shelter. Would it be weird to make a donation in the birthday girls name? Something small like $10-15 (what I would have spent on the gift), or does no gifts mean NO gifts at all? I guess I still bring a card? Don't want to make it uncomforatble?
