Deciphering Paint Formulas
Comments (1)jockewing, I use BM products almost everyday and I am behind a paint counter many times over also. To my knowledge their colorants are not listed in this manner at all. I have used Wythe Blue before and that was definitely not the formula for that color. Not in the Regal line, nor the Aura colorants. A gallon formula you would just 5x's it Their formulas are not listed that way. Unless the color was a BM color and different brands were used for the mix and products like their Ben, Nurtura and Aura uses the special gennex tints and they are not listed the way you found them neither. Another thing , just thinking these could be just plain standard universal tints and are not any way Ben Moores 12 glycol based or their waterborne gennex acrylic pigments. Could be UTC's which are closer to artist pigments. The numbers/letters you have listed above is not the typical way BM formula's are dispensed. They are fractions of fluid ounces, referred as shots 32shots = 1 oz. or such as 0x .14033 with oy, bk, tg, or aura tints r- 1,2,3; y- 1, etc. and the oz. given. I just don't recall anything ever being on their labels as what is listed above. Wish I could help you more, but that is what I know about their pigments and measurements....See MoreI am hunting for the formula of a very old California Paint color
Comments (2)Doesn't matter one bit if you find the formula or not!! The paint resins, colorants, etc., have changed a lot over the years. You're just chasing an old, moving target. If you're dead set on it, allow a paint shop a few days to work-up a match.....with TODAYS paint & colorants. You'll have to find a good sample of said color. An actual color-chip is best. Maybe you can find an old fandeck online???? Faron...See MorePaint Formula Help Please!
Comments (0)Hello. I was given this paint formula...Bly15, Cly34, ILy38, I have taken this formula to several paint stores and no one can mix it for me. Does anyone know what to do with this paint formula , or who can possibly mix it for me? Thanks!...See MoreWhat White paint color is this custom formula similar to?
Comments (5)The formula is just a recipe, a list of ingredients mixed into a paint base. It's not a definition - or description - of a color. There's no way to look up the list of ingredients and then correlate them to a stock paint color. Because there is more than one way to create a recipe for a paint color and get the same result. The only way to do what you want to do is to measure the color you have. You need the CIE Lab values measured with the standard of D65 Illuminant, 2 degree observer. Either do it yourself with a portable colorimeter or spectrophotometer. Since you're dealing with gloss, I'd use a Spectro 1 Pro from Variable. Change the settings to the standard D65 Illuminant, 2 degree observer. Or get a Mighty Board and paint a very, very neat sample of 2 coats for your store to measure for you. Do 3 coats if there is any question that 2 are properly hiding the Mighty Board. Mighty Boards are an ideal substrate for samples (IMO)....See Morejockewing
